    Comparing algorithms for automated vessel segmentation in computed tomography scans of the lung: the VESSEL12 study

    The VESSEL12 (VESsel SEgmentation in the Lung) challenge objectively compares the performance of different algorithms to identify vessels in thoracic computed tomography (CT) scans. Vessel segmentation is fundamental in computer aided processing of data generated by 3D imaging modalities. As manual vessel segmentation is prohibitively time consuming, any real world application requires some form of automation. Several approaches exist for automated vessel segmentation, but judging their relative merits is difficult due to a lack of standardized evaluation. We present an annotated reference dataset containing 20 CT scans and propose nine categories to perform a comprehensive evaluation of vessel segmentation algorithms from both academia and industry. Twenty algorithms participated in the VESSEL12 challenge, held at International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2012. All results have been published at the VESSEL12 website http://vessel12.grand-challenge.org. The challenge remains ongoing and open to new participants.     Inter-comparison of medical image segmentation algorithms

    Segmentation of images is a vital part of medical image processing, and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is already recognized as a very important tool for clinical diagnosis. In this thesis, comparisons between different segmentation algorithms are carried out, specifically on brain MRI images. Initial parts of the thesis provide the background to the project, and an introduction to the basic principles of MRI, respectively, followed by parameter definitions and MRI image artifacts. The next part briefly covers various image pre-processing techniques which are required, and this is followed with a review of the major segmentation techniques which are available, including thresholding, region growing, clustering, and K-Means clustering. The concept of fuzzy logic is also introduced here, and the chapter concludes with a discussion of fuzzy logic based segmentation algorithms such as Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) and Improved Fuzzy C-Means (IFCM) clustering algorithms. The following part provides details concerning the source, type and parameters of the data (images) used for this thesis. Evaluation and inter-comparisons between a number of different segmentation algorithms are given in near concluding part, finally, conclusions and suggestions for future research are provided in last part. Qualitative comparisons on real images and quantitative comparisons on simulated images were performed. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons demonstrated that fuzzy logic based segmentation algorithms are superior in comparison with classical segmentation algorithms. Edge-based segmentation algorithms demonstrated the poorest performance of all; K-means and IFCM clustering algorithms performed better, and FCM demonstrated the best performance of all.     Comparative evaluation of instrument segmentation and tracking methods in minimally invasive surgery

    Intraoperative segmentation and tracking of minimally invasive instruments is a prerequisite for computer- and robotic-assisted surgery. Since additional hardware like tracking systems or the robot encoders are cumbersome and lack accuracy, surgical vision is evolving as promising techniques to segment and track the instruments using only the endoscopic images. However, what is missing so far are common image data sets for consistent evaluation and benchmarking of algorithms against each other. The paper presents a comparative validation study of different vision-based methods for instrument segmentation and tracking in the context of robotic as well as conventional laparoscopic surgery. The contribution of the paper is twofold: we introduce a comprehensive validation data set that was provided to the study participants and present the results of the comparative validation study. Based on the results of the validation study, we arrive at the conclusion that modern deep learning approaches outperform other methods in instrument segmentation tasks, but the results are still not perfect. Furthermore, we show that merging results from different methods actually significantly increases accuracy in comparison to the best stand-alone method. On the other hand, the results of the instrument tracking task show that this is still an open challenge, especially during challenging scenarios in conventional laparoscopic surgery

    Can the Use of nonlinear Color Metrics systematically improve Segmentation?

    Image segmentation is a procedure where an image is split into its constituent parts, according to some criterion. In the literature, there are different well-known approaches for segmentation, such as clustering, thresholding, graph theory and region growing. Such approaches, additionally, can be combined with color distance metrics, playing an important role for color similarity computation. Aiming to investigate general approaches able to enhance the performance of segmentation methods, this work presents an empirical study of the effect of a nonlinear color metric on segmentation procedures. For this purpose, three algorithms were  chosen: Mumford-Shah, Color Structure Code and Felzenszwalb and Huttenlocher Segmentation. The color similarity metric employed by these algorithms (L2-norm) was replaced by the Polynomial Mahalanobis Distance. This metric is an extension of the statistical Mahalanobis Distance used to measure the distance between coordinates and distribution centers. An evaluation based upon automated comparison of segmentation results against ground truths from the Berkeley Dataset was performed. All three segmentation approaches were compared to their traditional implementations, against each other and also to a large set of other segmentation methods. The statistical analysis performed has indicated a systematic improvement of segmentation results for all three segmentation approaches when the nonlinear metric was employed

    Image segmentation evaluation using an integrated framework

    In this paper we present a general framework we have developed for running and evaluating automatic image and video segmentation algorithms. This framework was designed to allow effortless integration of existing and forthcoming image segmentation algorithms, and allows researchers to focus more on the development and evaluation of segmentation methods, relying on the framework for encoding/decoding and visualization. We then utilize this framework to automatically evaluate four distinct segmentation algorithms, and present and discuss the results and statistical findings of the experiment
