mTOSSIM: A simulator that estimates battery lifetime in wireless sensor networks
Knowledge of the battery lifetime of the wireless sensor network is important for many situations,
such as in evaluation of the location of nodes or the estimation of the connectivity,
along time, between devices. However, experimental evaluation is a very time-consuming
task. It depends on many factors, such as the use of the radio transceiver or the distance
between nodes. Simulations reduce considerably this time. They allow the evaluation of
the network behavior before its deployment. This article presents a simulation tool which
helps developers to obtain information about battery state. This simulator extends the
well-known TOSSIM simulator. Therefore it is possible to evaluate TinyOS applications
using an accurate model of the battery consumption and its relation to the radio power
transmission. Although an specific indoor scenario is used in testing of simulation, the simulator
is not limited to this environment. It is possible to work in outdoor scenarios too.

Engine performance characteristics and evaluation of variation in the length of intake plenum
In the engine with multipoint fuel injection system using electronically controlled fuel injectors has an intake manifold in which only the air flows and, the fuel is injected into the intake valve. Since the intake manifolds transport mainly air, the supercharging effects of the variable length intake plenum will be different from carbureted engine. Engine tests have been carried out with the aim of constituting a base study to design a new variable length intake manifold plenum. The objective in this research is to study the engine performance characteristics and to evaluate the effects of the variation in the length of intake plenum. The engine test bed used for experimental work consists of a control panel, a hydraulic dynamometer and measurement instruments to measure the parameters of engine performance characteristics. The control panel is being used to perform administrative and management operating system. Besides that, the hydraulic dynamometer was used to measure the power of an engine by using a cell filled with liquid to increase its load. Thus, measurement instrument is provided in this test to measure the as brake torque, brake power, thermal efficiency and specific fuel consumption. The results showed that the variation in the plenum length causes an improvement on the engine performance characteristics especially on the fuel consumption at high load and low engine speeds which are put forward the system using for urban roads. PhyNetLab: An IoT-Based Warehouse Testbed
Future warehouses will be made of modular embedded entities with
communication ability and energy aware operation attached to the traditional
materials handling and warehousing objects. This advancement is mainly to
fulfill the flexibility and scalability needs of the emerging warehouses.
However, it leads to a new layer of complexity during development and
evaluation of such systems due to the multidisciplinarity in logistics,
embedded systems, and wireless communications. Although each discipline
provides theoretical approaches and simulations for these tasks, many issues
are often discovered in a real deployment of the full system. In this paper we
introduce PhyNetLab as a real scale warehouse testbed made of cyber physical
objects (PhyNodes) developed for this type of application. The presented
platform provides a possibility to check the industrial requirement of an
IoT-based warehouse in addition to the typical wireless sensor networks tests.
We describe the hardware and software components of the nodes in addition to
the overall structure of the testbed. Finally, we will demonstrate the
advantages of the testbed by evaluating the performance of the ETSI compliant
radio channel access procedure for an IoT warehouse
Giving Neurons to Sensors: An Approach to QoS Management Through Artificial Intelligence in Wireless Networks
For the latest ten years, many authors have focused their investigations
in wireless sensor networks. Different researching issues have
been extensively developed: power consumption, MAC protocols, selforganizing
network algorithms, data-aggregation schemes, routing protocols,
QoS management, etc. Due to the constraints on data processing
and power consumption, the use of artificial intelligence has been historically
discarded. However, in some special scenarios the features of
neural networks are appropriate to develop complex tasks such as path
discovery. In this paper, we explore the performance of two very well
known routing paradigms, directed diffusion and Energy-Aware Routing,
and our routing algorithm, named SIR, which has the novelty of being
based on the introduction of neural networks in every sensor node. Extensive
simulations over our wireless sensor network simulator, OLIMPO,
have been carried out to study the efficiency of the introduction of neural
networks. A comparison of the results obtained with every routing protocol
is analyzed. This paper attempts to encourage the use of artificial
intelligence techniques in wireless sensor nodes
Coverage Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: Review and Future Directions
The coverage problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be generally
defined as a measure of how effectively a network field is monitored by its
sensor nodes. This problem has attracted a lot of interest over the years and
as a result, many coverage protocols were proposed. In this survey, we first
propose a taxonomy for classifying coverage protocols in WSNs. Then, we
classify the coverage protocols into three categories (i.e. coverage aware
deployment protocols, sleep scheduling protocols for flat networks, and
cluster-based sleep scheduling protocols) based on the network stage where the
coverage is optimized. For each category, relevant protocols are thoroughly
reviewed and classified based on the adopted coverage techniques. Finally, we
discuss open issues (and recommend future directions to resolve them)
associated with the design of realistic coverage protocols. Issues such as
realistic sensing models, realistic energy consumption models, realistic
connectivity models and sensor localization are covered
Design of Ad Hoc Wireless Mesh Networks Formed by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with Advanced Mechanical Automation
Ad hoc wireless mesh networks formed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
equipped with wireless transceivers (access points (APs)) are increasingly
being touted as being able to provide a flexible "on-the-fly" communications
infrastructure that can collect and transmit sensor data from sensors in
remote, wilderness, or disaster-hit areas. Recent advances in the mechanical
automation of UAVs have resulted in separable APs and replaceable batteries
that can be carried by UAVs and placed at arbitrary locations in the field.
These advanced mechanized UAV mesh networks pose interesting questions in terms
of the design of the network architecture and the optimal UAV scheduling
algorithms. This paper studies a range of network architectures that depend on
the mechanized automation (AP separation and battery replacement) capabilities
of UAVs and proposes heuristic UAV scheduling algorithms for each network
architecture, which are benchmarked against optimal designs.Comment: 12 page
