Evaluation of recommender systems in streaming environments
Evaluation of recommender systems is typically done with finite datasets.
This means that conventional evaluation methodologies are only applicable in
offline experiments, where data and models are stationary. However, in real
world systems, user feedback is continuously generated, at unpredictable rates.
Given this setting, one important issue is how to evaluate algorithms in such a
streaming data environment. In this paper we propose a prequential evaluation
protocol for recommender systems, suitable for streaming data environments, but
also applicable in stationary settings. Using this protocol we are able to
monitor the evolution of algorithms' accuracy over time. Furthermore, we are
able to perform reliable comparative assessments of algorithms by computing
significance tests over a sliding window. We argue that besides being suitable
for streaming data, prequential evaluation allows the detection of phenomena
that would otherwise remain unnoticed in the evaluation of both offline and

Multi-label Class-imbalanced Action Recognition in Hockey Videos via 3D Convolutional Neural Networks
Automatic analysis of the video is one of most complex problems in the fields
of computer vision and machine learning. A significant part of this research
deals with (human) activity recognition (HAR) since humans, and the activities
that they perform, generate most of the video semantics. Video-based HAR has
applications in various domains, but one of the most important and challenging
is HAR in sports videos. Some of the major issues include high inter- and
intra-class variations, large class imbalance, the presence of both group
actions and single player actions, and recognizing simultaneous actions, i.e.,
the multi-label learning problem. Keeping in mind these challenges and the
recent success of CNNs in solving various computer vision problems, in this
work, we implement a 3D CNN based multi-label deep HAR system for multi-label
class-imbalanced action recognition in hockey videos. We test our system for
two different scenarios: an ensemble of binary networks vs. a single
-output network, on a publicly available dataset. We also compare our
results with the system that was originally designed for the chosen dataset.
Experimental results show that the proposed approach performs better than the

RED: Deep Recurrent Neural Networks for Sleep EEG Event Detection
The brain electrical activity presents several short events during sleep that
can be observed as distinctive micro-structures in the electroencephalogram
(EEG), such as sleep spindles and K-complexes. These events have been
associated with biological processes and neurological disorders, making them a
research topic in sleep medicine. However, manual detection limits their study
because it is time-consuming and affected by significant inter-expert
variability, motivating automatic approaches. We propose a deep learning
approach based on convolutional and recurrent neural networks for sleep EEG
event detection called Recurrent Event Detector (RED). RED uses one of two
input representations: a) the time-domain EEG signal, or b) a complex
spectrogram of the signal obtained with the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT).
Unlike previous approaches, a fixed time window is avoided and temporal context
is integrated to better emulate the visual criteria of experts. When evaluated
on the MASS dataset, our detectors outperform the state of the art in both
sleep spindle and K-complex detection with a mean F1-score of at least 80.9%
and 82.6%, respectively. Although the CWT-domain model obtained a similar
performance than its time-domain counterpart, the former allows in principle a
more interpretable input representation due to the use of a spectrogram. The
proposed approach is event-agnostic and can be used directly to detect other

Techniques for the Fast Simulation of Models of Highly dependable Systems
With the ever-increasing complexity and requirements of highly dependable systems, their evaluation during design and operation is becoming more crucial. Realistic models of such systems are often not amenable to analysis using conventional analytic or numerical methods. Therefore, analysts and designers turn to simulation to evaluate these models. However, accurate estimation of dependability measures of these models requires that the simulation frequently observes system failures, which are rare events in highly dependable systems. This renders ordinary Simulation impractical for evaluating such systems. To overcome this problem, simulation techniques based on importance sampling have been developed, and are very effective in certain settings. When importance sampling works well, simulation run lengths can be reduced by several orders of magnitude when estimating transient as well as steady-state dependability measures. Limited Evaluation Cooperative Co-evolutionary Differential Evolution for Large-scale Neuroevolution
Many real-world control and classification tasks involve a large number of
features. When artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used for modeling these
tasks, the network architectures tend to be large. Neuroevolution is an
effective approach for optimizing ANNs; however, there are two bottlenecks that
make their application challenging in case of high-dimensional networks using
direct encoding. First, classic evolutionary algorithms tend not to scale well
for searching large parameter spaces; second, the network evaluation over a
large number of training instances is in general time-consuming. In this work,
we propose an approach called the Limited Evaluation Cooperative
Co-evolutionary Differential Evolution algorithm (LECCDE) to optimize
high-dimensional ANNs.
The proposed method aims to optimize the pre-synaptic weights of each
post-synaptic neuron in different subpopulations using a Cooperative
Co-evolutionary Differential Evolution algorithm, and employs a limited
evaluation scheme where fitness evaluation is performed on a relatively small
number of training instances based on fitness inheritance. We test LECCDE on
three datasets with various sizes, and our results show that cooperative
co-evolution significantly improves the test error comparing to standard
Differential Evolution, while the limited evaluation scheme facilitates a
significant reduction in computing time
