    A Comprehensive Survey on the Cyber-Security of Smart Grids: Cyber-Attacks, Detection, Countermeasure Techniques, and Future Directions

    One of the significant challenges that smart grid networks face is cyber-security. Several studies have been conducted to highlight those security challenges. However, the majority of these surveys classify attacks based on the security requirements, confidentiality, integrity, and availability, without taking into consideration the accountability requirement. In addition, some of these surveys focused on the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) model, which does not differentiate between the application, session, and presentation and the data link and physical layers of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model. In this survey paper, we provide a classification of attacks based on the OSI model and discuss in more detail the cyber-attacks that can target the different layers of smart grid networks communication. We also propose new classifications for the detection and countermeasure techniques and describe existing techniques under each category. Finally, we discuss challenges and future research directions

    Honeypot for Wireless Sensor Networks

    People have understood that computer systems need safeguarding and require knowledge of security principles for their protection. While this has led to solutions for system components such as malware-protection, firewalls and intrusion detection systems, the ubiquitous usage of tiny microcomputers appeared at the same time. A new interconnectivity is on the rise in our lives. Things become “smart” and increasingly build new networks of devices. In this context the wireless sensor networks here interact with users and also, vice versa as well; unprivileged users able to interact with the wireless sensor network may harm the privileged user as a result. The problem that needs to be solved consists of possible harm that may be caused by an unprivileged user interacting with the wireless sensor network of a privileged user and may come via an attack vector targeting a vul- nerability that may take as long as it is needed and the detection of such mal-behaviour can only be done if a sensing component is implemented as a kind of tool detecting the status of the attacked wireless sensor network component and monitors this problem happening as an event that needs to be researched further on. Innovation in attack detection comprehension is the key aspect of this work, because it was found to be a set of hitherto not combined aspects, mechanisms, drafts and sketches, lacking a central combined outcome. Therefore the contribution of this thesis consists in a span of topics starting with a summary of attacks, possible countermeasures and a sketch of the outcome to the design and implementation of a viable product, concluding in an outlook at possible further work. The chosen path for the work in this research was experimental prototype construction following an established research method that first highlights the analysis of attack vectors to the system component and then evaluates the possibilities in order to im- prove said method. This led to a concept well known in common large-scale computer science systems, called a honeypot. Its common definitions and setups were analy- sed and the concept translation to the wireless sensor network domain was evaluated. Then the prototype was designed and implemented. This was done by following the ap- proach set by the science of cybersecurity, which states that the results of experiments and prototypes lead to improving knowledge intentionally for re-use

    A framework for secure mobile computing in healthcare

    Mobile computing is rapidly becoming part of healthcare’s electronic landscape, helping to provide better quality of care and reduced cost. While the technology provides numerous advantages to the healthcare industry, it is not without risk. The size and portable nature of mobile computing devices present a highly vulnerable environment, which threaten the privacy and security of health information. Since these devices continually access possibly sensitive healthcare information, it is imperative that these devices are considered for security in order to meet regulatory compliance. In fact, the increase in government and industry regulation to ensure the privacy and security of health information, makes mobile security no longer just desirable, but mandatory. In addition, as healthcare becomes more aware of the need to reinforce patient confidence to gain competitive advantage, it makes mobile security desirable. Several guidelines regarding security best practices exist. Healthcare institutions are thus faced with matching the guidelines offered by best practices, with the legal and regulatory requirements. While this is a valuable question in general, this research focuses on the aspect of considering this question when considering the introduction of mobile computing into the healthcare environment. As a result, this research proposes a framework that will aid IT administrators in healthcare to ensure that privacy and security of health information is extended to mobile devices. The research uses a comparison between the best practices in ISO 17799:2005 and the regulatory requirements stipulated in HIPAA to provide a baseline for the mobile computing security model. The comparison ensures that the model meets healthcare specific industry requirement and international information security standard. In addition, the framework engages the Information Security Management System (ISMS) model based on the ISO 27000 standard. The framework, furthermore, points to existing technical security measurers associated with mobile computing. It is believed that the framework can assist in achieving mobile computing security that is compliant with the requirements in the healthcare industry

    Reasonable Latitude: Learning and Adaptability in British Army Despatch Riders During the Second World War

    Communications are essential for success in war. Armies capable of reliable, sustained communications have a distinct advantage over armies who experience communications failures. This thesis uses communications as its main case study to examine the degree to which the British Army was capable of learning, innovation, and adaptability during the Second World War. Utilising the development and experience of the Royal Corps of Signals, it demonstrates that a pattern of informal and formal learning processes emerged during the war, shedding light onto how the wider British Army not only learned but made use of the knowledge it generated. This study utilises oral histories and archival documents to find evidence of both informal and formal learning, focusing specifically on the role of despatch rider where possible. It finds that a complex process developed as the war developed, integrating battlefield adaptations, innovative strategy, and lessons-learned committees to evaluate and institute best practice. It determines that communications policy, strategy, and practice changes originated at all levels as the British Army sought to respond to a rapidly changing war. This thesis contributes to a wide range of fields within history: the Second World War, learning during war, communications, policy and strategy formation, oral history studies, lived experiences, and even that of the motorcycle during war. It relies on the stories of individuals alongside broader developments in both British and Allied operational decisions. Though it looks deeply at individuals and their understandings of the war, this thesis considers broader issues of executing changes during war, integrating new knowledge, and determining the best path forward. My research demonstrates that looking at both individual and collective responses are crucial in answering these questions

    The spectrum of electromagnetic frequencies impact the way individuals and society communicate. The discussion involves reforming the structures governing the spectrum, a debate that centers on the benefits of public versus private control over the resources. This article focuses on articulating governmental standards for managing and regulating public or private control of the spectrum. However, standards will not be easy to establish given the difficult cost assessments necessary to balance the public interest against communication. A regulatory agency can better govern spectrum management that accommodates both commonly and privately owned spectrum. Spectrum conflicts can be remedied easily by defining a class of per se nuisances. The article concludes by encouraging attentiveness to the costs of dispute resolution, the regulators? roles in reducing these costs, and the policy choices inherent in spectrum management. Any regulator agency that is established must play a role in resolving spectrum conflicts
