    Enhancing service quality and reliability in intelligent traffic system

    Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) can manage on-road traffic efficiently based on real-time traffic conditions, reduce delay at the intersections, and maintain the safety of the road users. However, emergency vehicles still struggle to meet their targeted response time, and an ITS is vulnerable to various types of attacks, including cyberattacks. To address these issues, in this dissertation, we introduce three techniques that enhance the service quality and reliability of an ITS. First, an innovative Emergency Vehicle Priority System (EVPS) is presented to assist an Emergency Vehicle (EV) in attending the incident place faster. Our proposed EVPS determines the proper priority codes of EV based on the type of incidents. After priority code generation, EVPS selects the number of traffic signals needed to be turned green considering the impact on other vehicles gathered in the relevant adjacent cells. Second, for improving reliability, an Intrusion Detection System for traffic signals is proposed for the first time, which leverages traffic and signal characteristics such as the flow rate, vehicle speed, and signal phase time. Shannon’s entropy is used to calculate the uncertainty associated with the likelihood of particular evidence and Dempster-Shafer (DS) decision theory is used to fuse the evidential information. Finally, to improve the reliability of a future ITS, we introduce a model that assesses the trust level of four major On-Board Units (OBU) of a self-driving car along with Global Positioning System (GPS) data and safety messages. Both subjective logic (DS theory) and CertainLogic are used to develop the theoretical underpinning for estimating the trust value of a self-driving car by fusing the trust value of four OBU components, GPS data and safety messages. For evaluation and validation purposes, a popular and widely used traffic simulation package, namely Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO), is used to develop the simulation platform using a real map of Melbourne CBD. The relevant historical real data taken from the VicRoads website were used to inject the traffic flow and density in the simulation model. We evaluated the performance of our proposed techniques considering different traffic and signal characteristics such as occupancy rate, flow rate, phase time, and vehicle speed under many realistic scenarios.     Traffic Road Congestion System using by the internet of vehicles (IoV)

    Traffic problems have increased in modern life due to a huge number of vehicles, big cities, and ignoring the traffic rules. Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) has improved the traffic system in previous some and plays a vital role in the best traffic control system in big cities. But due to some limitations, it is not enough to control some problems in specific conditions. Now a day invention of new technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) is used for collaboratively and efficiently performing tasks. This technology was also introduced in the transportation system which makes it an intelligent transportation system (ITS), this is called the Internet of vehicles (IOV). We will elaborate on traffic problems in the traditional system and elaborate on the benefits, enhancements, and reasons to better IOV by Systematic Literature Review (SLR). This technique will be implemented by targeting needed papers through many search phrases. A systematic literature review is used for 121 articles between 2014 and 2023. The IoV technologies and tools are required to create the IoV and resolve some traffic rules through SUMO (simulation of urban mobility) which is used for the design and simulation the road traffic. We have tried to contribute to the best model of the traffic control system. This paper will analysis two vehicular congestion control models in term of select the optimized and efficient model and elaborate on the reasons for efficiency by searching the solution SLR based questions. Due to some efficient features, we have suggested the IOV based on vehicular clouds. These efficient features make this model the best and most effective than the traditional model which is a great reason to enhance the network system.Comment: pages 16, figures

    A Survey on Wireless Sensor Network Security

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently attracted a lot of interest in the research community due their wide range of applications. Due to distributed nature of these networks and their deployment in remote areas, these networks are vulnerable to numerous security threats that can adversely affect their proper functioning. This problem is more critical if the network is deployed for some mission-critical applications such as in a tactical battlefield. Random failure of nodes is also very likely in real-life deployment scenarios. Due to resource constraints in the sensor nodes, traditional security mechanisms with large overhead of computation and communication are infeasible in WSNs. Security in sensor networks is, therefore, a particularly challenging task. This paper discusses the current state of the art in security mechanisms for WSNs. Various types of attacks are discussed and their countermeasures presented.     A Novel Energy Aware Clustering Mechanism with Fuzzy Logic in MANET Environment

    A Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) comprises of the vast range of devices such as sensors, smart phones, laptops and other mobile devices that connect with each other across wireless networks and collaborate in a dispersed fashion to offer network functions in the absence of a permanent infrastructure. The Cluster Head (CH) selection in a clustered MANET is still crucial for lowering each node's energy consumption and increasing the network's lifetime. However, in existing clustering mechanism trust of the all nodes are presumed those causes increased challenge in the MANET environment. Security is a crucial factor when constructing ad-hoc networks. In a MANET, energy consumption in route optimization is dependent on network resilience and connectivity. The primary objective of this study is to design a reliable clustering mechanism for MANETs that takes energy efficiency into account. For trusted energy-efficient CH in the nodes, a safe clustering strategy integrating energy-efficient and fuzzy logic based energy clustering is proposed to address security problems brought about by malicious nodes and to pick a trustworthy node as CH. To improve the problem findings Bat algorithm (BAT) is integrated with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The PSO technique is inspired because it imitates the sociological characteristics of the flock of the birds through random population. The BAT is a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by microbat echolocation behavior that uses pulse average with global optimization of the average path in the network. Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization (HPSO) and BAT techniques are applied to identify the best route between the source and destination. According to the simulation results, the suggested Fuzzy logic Particle Swarm Optimization BAT (FLPSO-BAT) technique has a minimum latency of 0.0019 milliseconds, with energy consumption value of 0.09 millijoules, maximal throughput of 0.76 bits per sec and detection rate of 90.5% without packet dropping attack

    A deep learning approach for intrusion detection in Internet of Things using bi-directional long short-term memory recurrent neural network

    Internet-of-Things connects every ‘thing’ with the Internet and allows these ‘things’ to communicate with each other. IoT comprises of innumerous interconnected devices of diverse complexities and trends. This fundamental nature of IoT structure intensifies the amount of attack targets which might affect the sustainable growth of IoT. Thus, security issues become a crucial factor to be addressed. A novel deep learning approach have been proposed in this thesis, for performing real-time detections of security threats in IoT systems using the Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network (BLSTM RNN). The proposed approach have been implemented through Google TensorFlow implementation framework and Python programming language. To train and test the proposed approach, UNSW-NB15 dataset has been employed, which is the most up-to-date benchmark dataset with sequential samples and contemporary attack patterns. This thesis work employs binary classification of attack and normal patterns. The experimental result demonstrates the proficiency of the introduced model with respect to recall, precision, FAR and f-1 score. The model attains over 97% detection accuracy. The test result demonstrates that BLSTM RNN is profoundly effective for building highly efficient model for intrusion detection and offers a novel research methodology

    Abstract. This thesis explores the performance and efficiency of MQTT-based infrastructure Internet of Things (IoT) sensor networks for smart environment. The study focuses on the impact of network latency and broker switching in distributed multi-broker MQTT platforms. The research involves three case studies: a cloud-based multi-broker deployment, a Local Area Network (LAN)-based multi-broker deployment, and a multi-layer LAN network-based multi-broker deployment. The research is guided by three objectives: quantifying and analyzing the latency of multi-broker MQTT platforms; investigating the benefits of distributed brokers for edge users; and assessing the impact of switching latency at applications. This thesis ultimately seeks to answer three key questions related to network and switching latency, the merits of distributed brokers, and the influence of switching latency on the reliability of end-user applications

    Achieving network resiliency using sound theoretical and practical methods

    Computer networks have revolutionized the life of every citizen in our modern intercon- nected society. The impact of networked systems spans every aspect of our lives, from financial transactions to healthcare and critical services, making these systems an attractive target for malicious entities that aim to make financial or political profit. Specifically, the past decade has witnessed an astounding increase in the number and complexity of sophisti- cated and targeted attacks, known as advanced persistent threats (APT). Those attacks led to a paradigm shift in the security and reliability communities’ perspective on system design; researchers and government agencies accepted the inevitability of incidents and malicious attacks, and marshaled their efforts into the design of resilient systems. Rather than focusing solely on preventing failures and attacks, resilient systems are able to maintain an acceptable level of operation in the presence of such incidents, and then recover gracefully into normal operation. Alongside prevention, resilient system design focuses on incident detection as well as timely response. Unfortunately, the resiliency efforts of research and industry experts have been hindered by an apparent schism between theory and practice, which allows attackers to maintain the upper hand advantage. This lack of compatibility between the theory and practice of system design is attributed to the following challenges. First, theoreticians often make impractical and unjustifiable assumptions that allow for mathematical tractability while sacrificing accuracy. Second, the security and reliability communities often lack clear definitions of success criteria when comparing different system models and designs. Third, system designers often make implicit or unstated assumptions to favor practicality and ease of design. Finally, resilient systems are tested in private and isolated environments where validation and reproducibility of the results are not publicly accessible. In this thesis, we set about showing that the proper synergy between theoretical anal- ysis and practical design can enhance the resiliency of networked systems. We illustrate the benefits of this synergy by presenting resiliency approaches that target the inter- and intra-networking levels. At the inter-networking level, we present CPuzzle as a means to protect the transport control protocol (TCP) connection establishment channel from state- exhaustion distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS). CPuzzle leverages client puzzles to limit the rate at which misbehaving users can establish TCP connections. We modeled the problem of determining the puzzle difficulty as a Stackleberg game and solve for the equilibrium strategy that balances the users’ utilizes against CPuzzle’s resilience capabilities. Furthermore, to handle volumetric DDoS attacks, we extend CPuzzle and implement Midgard, a cooperative approach that involves end-users in the process of tolerating and neutralizing DDoS attacks. Midgard is a middlebox that resides at the edge of an Internet service provider’s network and uses client puzzles at the IP level to allocate bandwidth to its users. At the intra-networking level, we present sShield, a game-theoretic network response engine that manipulates a network’s connectivity in response to an attacker who is moving laterally to compromise a high-value asset. To implement such decision making algorithms, we leverage the recent advances in software-defined networking (SDN) to collect logs and security alerts about the network and implement response actions. However, the programma- bility offered by SDN comes with an increased chance for design-time bugs that can have drastic consequences on the reliability and security of a networked system. We therefore introduce BiFrost, an open-source tool that aims to verify safety and security proper- ties about data-plane programs. BiFrost translates data-plane programs into functionally equivalent sequential circuits, and then uses well-established hardware reduction, abstrac- tion, and verification techniques to establish correctness proofs about data-plane programs. By focusing on those four key efforts, CPuzzle, Midgard, sShield, and BiFrost, we believe that this work illustrates the benefits that the synergy between theory and practice can bring into the world of resilient system design. This thesis is an attempt to pave the way for further cooperation and coordination between theoreticians and practitioners, in the hope of designing resilient networked systems

    TRUST-BASED DEFENSE AGAINST INSIDER PACKET DROP ATTACKS IN WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

    In most wireless sensor networks (WSNs), sensor nodes generate data packets and send them to the base station (BS) by multi-hop routing paths because of their limited energy and transmission range. The insider packet drop attacks refer to a set of attacks where compromised nodes intentionally drop packets. It is challenging to accurately detect such attacks because packets may also be dropped due to collision, congestion, or other network problems. Trust mechanism is a promising approach to identify inside packet drop attackers. In such an approach, each node will monitor its neighbor's packet forwarding behavior and use this observation to measure the trustworthiness of its neighbors. Once a neighbor's trust value falls below a threshold, it will be considered as an attacker by the monitoring node and excluded from the routing paths so further damage to the network will not be made. In this dissertation, we analyze the limitation of the state-of-the-art trust mechanisms and propose several enhancement techniques to better defend against insider packet drop attacks in WSNs. First, we observe that inside attackers can easily defeat the current trust mechanisms and even if they are caught, normally a lot of damage has already been made to the network. We believe this is caused by current trust models' inefficiency in distinguishing attacking behaviors and normal network transmission failures. We demonstrate that the phenomenon of consecutive packet drops is one fundamental difference between attackers and good sensor nodes and build a hybrid trust model based on it to improve the detection speed and accuracy of current trust models. Second, trust mechanisms give false alarms when they mis-categorize good nodes as attackers. Aggressive mechanisms like our hybrid approach designed to catch attackers as early as possible normally have high false alarm rate. Removing these nodes from routing paths may significantly reduce the performance of the network. We propose a novel false alarm detection and recovery mechanism that can recover the falsely detected good nodes. Next, we show that more intelligent packet drop attackers can launch advanced attacks without being detected by introducing a selective forwarding-based denial-of-service attack that drops only packets from specific victim nodes. We develop effective detection and prevention methods against such attack. We have implemented all the methods we have proposed and conducted extensive simulations with the OPNET network simulator to validate their effectiveness
