    Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law

    This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI.     Guided rewriting and constraint satisfaction for parallel GPU code generation

    Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are notoriously hard to optimise for manually due to their scheduling and memory hierarchies. What is needed are good automatic code generators and optimisers for such parallel hardware. Functional approaches such as Accelerate, Futhark and LIFT leverage a high-level algorithmic Intermediate Representation (IR) to expose parallelism and abstract the implementation details away from the user. However, producing efficient code for a given accelerator remains challenging. Existing code generators depend on the user input to choose a subset of hard-coded optimizations or automated exploration of implementation search space. The former suffers from the lack of extensibility, while the latter is too costly due to the size of the search space. A hybrid approach is needed, where a space of valid implementations is built automatically and explored with the aid of human expertise. This thesis presents a solution combining user-guided rewriting and automatically generated constraints to produce high-performance code. The first contribution is an automatic tuning technique to find a balance between performance and memory consumption. Leveraging its functional patterns, the LIFT compiler is empowered to infer tuning constraints and limit the search to valid tuning combinations only. Next, the thesis reframes parallelisation as a constraint satisfaction problem. Parallelisation constraints are extracted automatically from the input expression, and a solver is used to identify valid rewriting. The constraints truncate the search space to valid parallel mappings only by capturing the scheduling restrictions of the GPU in the context of a given program. A synchronisation barrier insertion technique is proposed to prevent data races and improve the efficiency of the generated parallel mappings. The final contribution of this thesis is the guided rewriting method, where the user encodes a design space of structural transformations using high-level IR nodes called rewrite points. These strongly typed pragmas express macro rewrites and expose design choices as explorable parameters. The thesis proposes a small set of reusable rewrite points to achieve tiling, cache locality, data reuse and memory optimisation. A comparison with the vendor-provided handwritten kernel ARM Compute Library and the TVM code generator demonstrates the effectiveness of this thesis' contributions. With convolution as a use case, LIFT-generated direct and GEMM-based convolution implementations are shown to perform on par with the state-of-the-art solutions on a mobile GPU. Overall, this thesis demonstrates that a functional IR yields well to user-guided and automatic rewriting for high-performance code generation

    Investigation into Photon Emissions as a Side-Channel Leakage in Two Microcontrollers: A Focus on SRAM Blocks

    Microcontrollers are extensively utilized across a diverse range of applications. However, with the escalating usage of these devices, the risk to their security and the valuable data they process correspondingly intensifies. These devices could potentially be susceptible to various security threats, with side channel leakage standing out as a notable concern. Among the numerous types of side-channel leakages, photon emissions from active devices emerge as a potentially significant concern. These emissions, a characteristic of all semiconductor devices including microcontrollers, occur during their operation. Depending on the operating point and the internal state of the chip, these emissions can reflect the device’s internal operations. Therefore, a malicious individual could potentially exploit these emissions to gain insights into the computations being performed within the device. This dissertation delves into the investigation of photon emissions from the SRAM blocks of two distinct microcontrollers, utilizing a cost-effective setup. The aim is to extract information from these emissions, analyzing them as potential side-channel leakage points. In the first segment of the study, a PIC microcontroller variant is investigated. The quiescent photon emissions from the SRAM are examined. A correlation attack was successfully executed on these emissions, which led to the recovery of the AES encryption key. Furthermore, differential analysis was used to examine the location of SRAM bits. The combination of this information with the application of an image processing method, namely the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), assisted in revealing the content of SRAM cells from photon emission images. The second segment of this study, for the first time, emphasizes on a RISC-V chip, examining the photon emissions of the SRAM during continuous reading. Probing the photon emissions from the row and column detectors led to the identification of a target word location, which is capable of revealing the AES key. Also, the content of target row was retrieved through the photon emissions originating from the drivers and the SRAM cells themselves. Additionally, the SSIM technique was utilized to determine the address of a targeted word in RISC-V photon emissions which cannot be analyzed through visual inspection. The insights gained from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of side-channel leakage via photon emissions and demonstrate its potential potency in extracting critical information from digital devices. Moreover, this information significantly contributes to the development of innovative security measures, an aspect becoming increasingly crucial in our progressively digitized world

    On the Utility of Representation Learning Algorithms for Myoelectric Interfacing

    Electrical activity produced by muscles during voluntary movement is a reflection of the firing patterns of relevant motor neurons and, by extension, the latent motor intent driving the movement. Once transduced via electromyography (EMG) and converted into digital form, this activity can be processed to provide an estimate of the original motor intent and is as such a feasible basis for non-invasive efferent neural interfacing. EMG-based motor intent decoding has so far received the most attention in the field of upper-limb prosthetics, where alternative means of interfacing are scarce and the utility of better control apparent. Whereas myoelectric prostheses have been available since the 1960s, available EMG control interfaces still lag behind the mechanical capabilities of the artificial limbs they are intended to steer—a gap at least partially due to limitations in current methods for translating EMG into appropriate motion commands. As the relationship between EMG signals and concurrent effector kinematics is highly non-linear and apparently stochastic, finding ways to accurately extract and combine relevant information from across electrode sites is still an active area of inquiry.This dissertation comprises an introduction and eight papers that explore issues afflicting the status quo of myoelectric decoding and possible solutions, all related through their use of learning algorithms and deep Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. Paper I presents a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for multi-label movement decoding of high-density surface EMG (HD-sEMG) signals. Inspired by the successful use of CNNs in Paper I and the work of others, Paper II presents a method for automatic design of CNN architectures for use in myocontrol. Paper III introduces an ANN architecture with an appertaining training framework from which simultaneous and proportional control emerges. Paper Iv introduce a dataset of HD-sEMG signals for use with learning algorithms. Paper v applies a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model to decode finger forces from intramuscular EMG. Paper vI introduces a Transformer model for myoelectric interfacing that do not need additional training data to function with previously unseen users. Paper vII compares the performance of a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network to that of classical pattern recognition algorithms. Lastly, paper vIII describes a framework for synthesizing EMG from multi-articulate gestures intended to reduce training burden

    An Intelligent Time and Performance Efficient Algorithm for Aircraft Design Optimization

    Die Optimierung des Flugzeugentwurfs erfordert die Beherrschung der komplexen Zusammenhänge mehrerer Disziplinen. Trotz seiner Abhängigkeit von einer Vielzahl unabhängiger Variablen zeichnet sich dieses komplexe Entwurfsproblem durch starke indirekte Verbindungen und eine daraus resultierende geringe Anzahl lokaler Minima aus. Kürzlich entwickelte intelligente Methoden, die auf selbstlernenden Algorithmen basieren, ermutigten die Suche nach einer diesem Bereich zugeordneten neuen Methode. Tatsächlich wird der in dieser Arbeit entwickelte Hybrid-Algorithmus (Cavus) auf zwei Hauptdesignfälle im Luft- und Raumfahrtbereich angewendet: Flugzeugentwurf- und Flugbahnoptimierung. Der implementierte neue Ansatz ist in der Lage, die Anzahl der Versuchspunkte ohne große Kompromisse zu reduzieren. Die Trendanalyse zeigt, dass der Cavus-Algorithmus für die komplexen Designprobleme, mit einer proportionalen Anzahl von Prüfpunkten konservativer ist, um die erfolgreichen Muster zu finden. Aircraft Design Optimization requires mastering of the complex interrelationships of multiple disciplines. Despite its dependency on a diverse number of independent variables, this complex design problem has favourable nature as having strong indirect links and as a result a low number of local minimums. Recently developed intelligent methods that are based on self-learning algorithms encouraged finding a new method dedicated to this area. Indeed, the hybrid (Cavus) algorithm developed in this thesis is applied two main design cases in aerospace area: aircraft design optimization and trajectory optimization. The implemented new approach is capable of reducing the number of trial points without much compromise. The trend analysis shows that, for the complex design problems the Cavus algorithm is more conservative with a proportional number of trial points in finding the successful patterns
