    An efficient multichannel wireless sensor networks MAC protocol based on IEEE 802.11 distributed co-ordinated function.

    This research aimed to create new knowledge and pioneer a path in the area relating to future trends in the WSN, by resolving some of the issues at the MAC layer in Wireless Sensor Networks. This work introduced a Multi-channel Distributed Coordinated Function (MC-DCF) which takes advantage of multi-channel assignment. The backoff algorithm of the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) was modified to invoke channel switching, based on threshold criteria in order to improve the overall throughput for wireless sensor networks. This work commenced by surveying different protocols: contention-based MAC protocols, transport layer protocols, cross-layered design and multichannel multi-radio assignments. A number of existing protocols were analysed, each attempting to resolve one or more problems faced by the current layers. The 802.15.4 performed very poorly at high data rate and at long range. Therefore 802.15.4 is not suitable for sensor multimedia or surveillance system with streaming data for future multichannel multi-radio systems. A survey on 802.11 DCF - which was designed mainly for wireless networks –supports and confirm that it has a power saving mechanism which is used to synchronise nodes. However it uses a random back-off mechanism that cannot provide deterministic upper bounds on channel access delay and as such cannot support real-time traffic. The weaknesses identified by surveying this protocol form the backbone of this thesis The overall aim for this thesis was to introduce multichannel with single radio as a new paradigm for IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordinated Function (DCF) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that is used in a wide range of applications, from military application, environmental monitoring, medical care, smart buildings and other industry and to extend WSNs with multimedia capability which sense for instance sounds or motion, video sensor which capture video events of interest. Traditionally WSNs do not need high data rate and throughput, since events are normally captured periodically. With the paradigm shift in technology, multimedia streaming has become more demanding than data sensing applications as such the need for high data rate protocol for WSN which is an emerging technology in this area. The IEEE 802.11 can support data rates up to 54Mbps and 802.11 DCF was designed specifically for use in wireless networks. This thesis focused on designing an algorithm that applied multichannel to IEEE 802.11 DCF back-off algorithm to reduce the waiting time of a node and increase throughput when attempting to access the medium. Data collection in WSN tends to suffer from heavy congestion especially nodes nearer to the sink node. Therefore, this thesis proposes a contention based MAC protocol to address this problem from the inspiration of the 802.11 DCF backoff algorithm resulting from a comparison of IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4 for Future Green Multichannel Multi-radio Wireless Sensor Networks

    Enhanced collision avoidance mechanisms for wireless sensor networks through high accuracy collision modeling

    Wireless channel and multi-hop communications cause a significant number of packet collisions in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Although a collision may cause packet loss and reduce network performance, low-power wireless transceivers allow packet reception in the presence of collisions if at least one signal can provide a sufficiently high power compared with other signals. Therefore, with respect to the large number of nodes used in WSNs, which necessitates the use of simulation for protocol development, collisions should be addressed at two layers: First, collisions should be modeled at the physical layer through a high-accuracy packet reception algorithm that decides about packet reception in the presence of collisions. Second, collision avoidance mechanisms should be employed at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer to reduce packet losses caused by collisions. Unfortunately, the existing packet reception algorithms exhibit low accuracy and impede the development of efficient collision avoidance mechanisms. From the collision avoidance perspective, existing contention-based MAC protocols do not provide reliable packet broadcasting, thereby affecting the initialization performance of WSNs. In addition, despite the benefits of schedule-based MAC protocols during the data-gathering phase, the existing mechanisms rely on unrealistic assumptions. The first major contribution of this work is CApture Modeling Algorithm (CAMA), which enables collision modeling with high accuracy and efficiency at the physical layer. The higher accuracy of CAMA against existing approaches is validated through extensive comparisons with empirical experiments. The second major contribution includes mechanisms that improve the reliability of packet broadcasting. In particular, adaptive contention window adjustment mechanisms and the Geowindow algorithm are proposed for collision avoidance during the initialization phases. These mechanisms considerably improve the accuracy of the initialization phases, without violating duration and energy efficiency requirements. As the third major contribution, a distributed and concurrent link-scheduling algorithm (called DICSA) is proposed for collision avoidance during the data-gathering phase. DICSA provides faster slot assignment, higher spatial reuse and lower energy consumption, compared with existing algorithms. Furthermore, evaluating DICSA within a MAC protocol confirms its higher throughput, higher delivery ratio, and lower end-to-end delay

    A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consists of small, low cost, and low energy sensor nodes that cooperatively monitor physical quantities, control actuators, and perform data processing tasks. A network may consist of thousands of randomly deployed self-configurable nodes that operate autonomously to form a multihop topology. This Thesis focuses on Quality of Service (QoS) in low-energy WSNs that aim at several years operation time with small batteries. As a WSN may include both critical and non-critical control and monitoring applications, QoS is needed to make intelligent, content specific trade-offs between energy and network performance. The main research problem is defining and implementing QoS with constrained energy budget, processing power, communication bandwidth, and data and program memories. The problem is approached via protocol designs and algorithms. These are verified with simulations and with measurements in practical deployments. This Thesis defines QoS for WSNs with quantifiable metrics to allow measuring and managing the network performance. The definition is used as a basis for QoS routing protocol and Medium Access Control (MAC) schemes, comprising dynamic capacity allocation algorithm and QoS support layer. Dynamic capacity allocation is targeted at reservation based MACs, whereas the QoS support layer operates on contention based MACs. Instead of optimizing the protocols for a certain use case, the protocols allow configurable QoS based on application specific requirements. Finally, this Thesis designs sensor self-diagnostics and diagnostics analysis tool for verifying network performance. Compared to the related proposals on in-network sensor diagnostics, the diagnostics also detects performance problems and identifies reasons for the issues thus allowing the correction of problems. The results show that the developed protocols allow a clear trade-off between energy, latency, throughput, and reliability aspects of QoS while incurring a minimal overhead. The feasibility of results for extremely resource constrained WSNs is verified with the practical implementation with a prototype hardware platform having only few Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS) of processing power and less than a hundred kBs data and program memories. The results of this Thesis can be used in the WSN research, development, and implementation in general. The developed QoS definition, protocols, and diagnostics tools can be used separately or adapted to other applications and protocols

    International audienceThe proliferation of embedded systems, wireless technologies, and Internet protocols have enabled the Internet of Things (IoT) to bridge the gap between the virtual and physical world through enabling the monitoring and actuation of the physical world controlled by data processing systems. Wireless technologies, despite their offered convenience, flexibility, low cost, and mobility pose unique challenges such as fading, interference, energy, and security, which must be carefully addressed when using resource-constrained IoT devices. To this end, the efforts of the research community have led to the standardization of several wireless technologies for various types of application domains depending on factors such as reliability, latency, scalability, and energy efficiency. In this paper, we first overview these standard wireless technologies, and we specifically study the MAC and physical layer technologies proposed to address the requirements and challenges of wireless communications. Furthermore, we explain the use of these standards in various application domains, such as smart homes, smart healthcare, industrial automation, and smart cities, and discuss their suitability in satisfying the requirements of these applications. In addition to proposing guidelines to weigh the pros and cons of each standard for an application at hand, we also examine what new strategies can be exploited to overcome existing challenges and support emerging IoT applications

    CAMA: Efficient Modeling of the Capture Effect for Low Power Wireless Networks

    Network simulation is an essential tool for the design and evaluation of wireless network protocols, and realistic channel modeling is essential for meaningful analysis. Recently, several network protocols have demonstrated substantial network performance improvements by exploiting the capture effect, but existing models of the capture effect are still not adequate for protocol simulation and analysis. Physical-level models that calculate the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for every incoming bit are too slow to be used for large-scale or long-term networking experiments, and link-level models such as those currently used by the NS2 simulator do not accurately predict protocol performance. In this article, we propose a new technique called the capture modeling algorithm (CAMA) that provides the simulation fidelity of physical-level models while achieving the simulation time of link-level models. We confirm the validity of CAMA through comparison with the empirical traces of the experiments conducted by various numbers of CC1000 and CC2420-based nodes in different scenarios. Our results indicate that CAMA can accurately predict the packet reception, corruption, and collision detection rates of real radios, while existing models currently used by the NS2 simulator produce substantial prediction error

    A survey on vehicular communication for cooperative truck platooning application

    Platooning is an application where a group of vehicles move one after each other in close proximity, acting jointly as a single physical system. The scope of platooning is to improve safety, reduce fuel consumption, and increase road use efficiency. Even if conceived several decades ago as a concept, based on the new progress in automation and vehicular networking platooning has attracted particular attention in the latest years and is expected to become of common implementation in the next future, at least for trucks.The platoon system is the result of a combination of multiple disciplines, from transportation, to automation, to electronics, to telecommunications. In this survey, we consider the platooning, and more specifically the platooning of trucks, from the point of view of wireless communications. Wireless communications are indeed a key element, since they allow the information to propagate within the convoy with an almost negligible delay and really making all vehicles acting as one. Scope of this paper is to present a comprehensive survey on connected vehicles for the platooning application, starting with an overview of the projects that are driving the development of this technology, followed by a brief overview of the current and upcoming vehicular networking architecture and standards, by a review of the main open issues related to wireless communications applied to platooning, and a discussion of security threats and privacy concerns.     Models and Protocols for Resource Optimization in Wireless Mesh Networks

    Wireless mesh networks are built on a mix of fixed and mobile nodes interconnected via wireless links to form a multihop ad hoc network. An emerging application area for wireless mesh networks is their evolution into a converged infrastructure used to share and extend, to mobile users, the wireless Internet connectivity of sparsely deployed fixed lines with heterogeneous capacity, ranging from ISP-owned broadband links to subscriber owned low-speed connections. In this thesis we address different key research issues for this networking scenario. First, we propose an analytical predictive tool, developing a queuing network model capable of predicting the network capacity and we use it in a load aware routing protocol in order to provide, to the end users, a quality of service based on the throughput. We then extend the queuing network model and introduce a multi-class queuing network model to predict analytically the average end-to-end packet delay of the traffic flows among the mobile end users and the Internet. The analytical models are validated against simulation. Second, we propose an address auto-configuration solution to extend the coverage of a wireless mesh network by interconnecting it to a mobile ad hoc network in a transparent way for the infrastructure network (i.e., the legacy Internet interconnected to the wireless mesh network). Third, we implement two real testbed prototypes of the proposed solutions as a proof-of-concept, both for the load aware routing protocol and the auto-configuration protocol. Finally we discuss the issues related to the adoption of ad hoc networking technologies to address the fragility of our communication infrastructure and to build the next generation of dependable, secure and rapidly deployable communications infrastructures
