    Perimeter Security and Intruder Detection Using Gravity Gradiometry: A Feasibility Study

    Changes in the mass distribution around some point on the Earth’s surface induce corresponding changes to the magnitude and direction of the gravity vector at that location. The nine-tensor derivative of the gravity vector, or gravity gradient, is sensitive to very small changes in the gravity vector. With some assumptions, continuous measurement of the gravity gradient using a gravity gradiometer (GGI) is used to determine the location of a mass change in the local area near the instrument. This investigation sought to determine the effectiveness, operating characteristics, and limitations of a physical perimeter security system that uses an array of GGIs to detect and locate a human intruder. Results are obtained via computer simulations utilizing the closed form solution for calculating a gravity gradient given an object’s size and mass, as well as industry-predicted future GGI performance characteristics

    Design and Development of a Research Framework for Prototyping Control Tower Augmented Reality Tools

    The purpose of the air traffic management system is to ensure the safe and efficient flow of air traffic. Therefore, while augmenting efficiency, throughput and capacity in airport operations, attention has rightly been placed on doing it in a safe manner. In the control tower, many advances in operational safety have come in the form of visualization tools for tower controllers. However, there is a paradox in developing such systems to increase controllers' situational awareness: by creating additional computer displays, the controller's vision is pulled away from the outside view and the time spent looking down at the monitors is increased. This reduces their situational awareness by forcing them to mentally and physically switch between the head-down equipment and the outside view. This research is based on the idea that augmented reality may be able to address this issue. The augmented reality concept has become increasingly popular over the past decade and is being proficiently used in many fields, such as entertainment, cultural heritage, aviation, military & defense. This know-how could be transferred to air traffic control with a relatively low effort and substantial benefits for controllers’ situation awareness. Research on this topic is consistent with SESAR objectives of increasing air traffic controllers’ situation awareness and enable up to 10 % of additional flights at congested airports while still increasing safety and efficiency. During the Ph.D., a research framework for prototyping augmented reality tools was set up. This framework consists of methodological tools for designing the augmented reality overlays, as well as of hardware and software equipment to test them. Several overlays have been designed and implemented in a simulated tower environment, which is a virtual reconstruction of Bologna airport control tower. The positive impact of such tools was preliminary assessed by means of the proposed methodology

    Stroke is the number one cause of adult disability in the United States and the third leading cause of death in the United States, Europe, and China.12 It is estimated 5% to 15% of all strokes are caused by ruptured intracranial aneurysms.3 In 2010, the National Stroke Association estimated the direct and indirect cost of strokes was $73.3 billion. The most common method for treating intracranial aneurysms is with platinum coils that are deployed to pack the aneurysm and block blood flow and prevent rupture. However, coil compaction and re-bleeding are two limitations with the coils because they have limited space filling capacity. Dr. Duncan Maitland has proposed a neurovascular embolization device (NED) be made out of shape memory polymer foam (SMP). The SMP device can be compressed down into a compact size for delivery via a catheter. Once in place, the device can be stimulated to regain its primary shape and expand up to 70x for superior occlusion of aneurysms. Design research is necessary to generate performance specifications for the NED that can assess the quality of prototypes. Customer needs are generated from interviews, activity diagrams, and market research. Functional models define the function and various sub-functions of the NED. Benchmarking highlights technology trends. A House of Quality matrix maps the customer needs to the engineering requirements. A failure modes and effects analysis emphasizes possible design deficiencies as a way of mitigating future risk. Performance specifications for the SMP foam are defined and can be used to establish a quality control program. Purification methods are suggested for the chemicals used in the synthesis of the SMP foam. Purification of the chemicals can reduce potential biocompatibility issues

Attempting to open one in a generation after the initial launching step might seemed either idealistic, naïve or with hindsight plain driven” (Formosa, 2017, p35). The drive to introduce Spatial Information integration across the Maltese Islands was an ideal, one that brought in technology, methodologies and results. However, as in the classic GIS evolution through the decades pointers on what constitutes a spatial information system were the subject of extensive debate Initially this was driven by the Push – Pull factor where entities using the primitive systems were being pushed by the availability of a mapping system and provision of base maps and hence creating data to fit the system. Initiated in the 1960s through military use, porting the processes to the physical and urban domains in the 1980s and 1990s, further takeup was made in the environmental domains in the 1990s to 2000s and eventually to the social domain in the 2000 to 2010s. Jumping through the decades, the global explosion of GIS and Spatial awareness as well as software, methods and integrative constructs morphed GIS into an availability that made it all possible, particularly through online and web-enabled GIS. This Pull – Push factor caused entities and private organisations to finally break through by creating their own data and then going for the mapping systems that fit their needs, systems that have evolved beyond recognition, both in the proprietary and open-source/open-access arenas.
