    Electrophysiologic assessment of (central) auditory processing disorder in children with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate

    Session 5aPP - Psychological and Physiological Acoustics: Auditory Function, Mechanisms, and Models (Poster Session)Cleft of the lip and/or palate is a common congenital craniofacial malformation worldwide, particularly non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P). Though middle ear deficits in this population have been universally noted in numerous studies, other auditory problems including inner ear deficits or cortical dysfunction are rarely reported. A higher prevalence of educational problems has been noted in children with NSCL/P compared to craniofacially normal children. These high level cognitive difficulties cannot be entirely attributed to peripheral hearing loss. Recently it has been suggested that children with NSCLP may be more prone to abnormalities in the auditory cortex. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether school age children with (NSCL/P) have a higher prevalence of indications of (central) auditory processing disorder [(C)APD] compared to normal age matched controls when assessed using auditory event-related potential (ERP) techniques. School children (6 to 15 years) with NSCL/P and normal controls with matched age and gender were recruited. Auditory ERP recordings included auditory brainstem response and late event-related potentials, including the P1-N1-P2 complex and P300 waveforms. Initial findings from the present study are presented and their implications for further research in this area —and clinical intervention—are outlined. © 2012 Acoustical Society of Americapublished_or_final_versio

    A multimodal approach to persuasion in oral presentations : the case of conference presentations, research dissemination talks and product pitches

    Esta tesis presenta un estudio multimodal y etnográfico del uso de estrategias persuasivas en tres géneros orales: presentaciones en conferencias, charlas de divulgación científica, y presentaciones de productos. Estos géneros comparten un importante componente persuasivo: los tres se dirigen a una audiencia tratando de convencerles del valor de un producto, servicio, o investigación. Sin embargo, se usan en dos contextos profesionales diferentes: el académico y el económico, por lo que cabe esperar que consigan su propósito comunicativo de forma diferente. Por otra parte, recientes estudios muestran como distintos discursos, tienden a adoptar cada vez más rasgos promocionales (promocionalización del discurso). En vista de ello, es factible establecer como hipótesis que los tres géneros están relacionados interdiscursivamente, y un estudio multimodal y etnográfico del uso de la persuasión en dichos géneros puede ayudar a clarificar las relaciones existentes entre ellos, así como sus diferencias.This thesis is a multimodal and ethnographic study of the use of persuasive strategies in three oral genres conference presentations, research dissemination talks and product pitches. These presentations share a strong persuasive component in their communicative purpose: the three of them address an audience to convince them of the value of a product, a service or a piece of research. However, they are used in business and academia by different discourse communities in different contexts, and therefore they can be expected to achieve their communicative goals in different ways. In addition, research suggests that there is a trend towards promotionalization of different discourses, among which academic discourse is included. In view of this, I hypothesize that these three genres are intertextually and interdiscursively related, and that a multimodal and ethnographic study of the use of persuasion in them can help to shed some light on these relationships and differences

    Multi-modal surrogates for retrieving and making sense of videos: is synchronization between the multiple modalities optimal?

    Video surrogates can help people quickly make sense of the content of a video before downloading or seeking more detailed information. Visual and audio features of a video are primary information carriers and might become important components of video retrieval and video sense-making. In the past decades, most research and development efforts on video surrogates have focused on visual features of the video, and comparatively little work has been done on audio surrogates and examining their pros and cons in aiding users' retrieval and sense-making of digital videos. Even less work has been done on multi-modal surrogates, where more than one modality are employed for consuming the surrogates, for example, the audio and visual modalities. This research examined the effectiveness of a number of multi-modal surrogates, and investigated whether synchronization between the audio and visual channels is optimal. A user study was conducted to evaluate six different surrogates on a set of six recognition and inference tasks to answer two main research questions: (1) How do automatically-generated multi-modal surrogates compare to manually-generated ones in video retrieval and video sense-making? and (2) Does synchronization between multiple surrogate channels enhance or inhibit video retrieval and video sense-making? Forty-eight participants participated in the study, in which the surrogates were measured on the the time participants spent on experiencing the surrogates, the time participants spent on doing the tasks, participants' performance accuracy on the tasks, participants' confidence in their task responses, and participants' subjective ratings on the surrogates. On average, the uncoordinated surrogates were more helpful than the coordinated ones, but the manually-generated surrogates were only more helpful than the automatically-generated ones in terms of task completion time. Participants' subjective ratings were more favorable for the coordinated surrogate C2 (Magic A + V) and the uncoordinated surrogate U1 (Magic A + Storyboard V) with respect to usefulness, usability, enjoyment, and engagement. The post-session questionnaire comments demonstrated participants' preference for the coordinated surrogates, but the comments also revealed the value of having uncoordinated sensory channels
