Information Recovery In Behavioral Networks
In the context of agent based modeling and network theory, we focus on the
problem of recovering behavior-related choice information from
origin-destination type data, a topic also known under the name of network
tomography. As a basis for predicting agents' choices we emphasize the
connection between adaptive intelligent behavior, causal entropy maximization
and self-organized behavior in an open dynamic system. We cast this problem in
the form of binary and weighted networks and suggest information theoretic
entropy-driven methods to recover estimates of the unknown behavioral flow
parameters. Our objective is to recover the unknown behavioral values across
the ensemble analytically, without explicitly sampling the configuration space.
In order to do so, we consider the Cressie-Read family of entropic functionals,
enlarging the set of estimators commonly employed to make optimal use of the
available information. More specifically, we explicitly work out two cases of
particular interest: Shannon functional and the likelihood functional. We then
employ them for the analysis of both univariate and bivariate data sets,
comparing their accuracy in reproducing the observed trends.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 4 table
Geometrical-based algorithm for variational segmentation and smoothing of vector-valued images
An optimisation method based on a nonlinear functional is considered for segmentation and smoothing of vector-valued images. An edge-based approach is proposed to initially segment the image using geometrical properties such as metric tensor of the linearly smoothed image. The nonlinear functional is then minimised for each segmented region to yield the smoothed image. The functional is characterised with a unique solution in contrast with the MumfordâShah functional for vector-valued images. An operator for edge detection is introduced as a result of this unique solution. This operator is analytically calculated and its detection performance and localisation are then compared with those of the DroGoperator. The implementations are applied on colour images as examples of vector-valued images, and the results demonstrate robust performance in noisy environments
A Second Order TV-type Approach for Inpainting and Denoising Higher Dimensional Combined Cyclic and Vector Space Data
In this paper we consider denoising and inpainting problems for higher
dimensional combined cyclic and linear space valued data. These kind of data
appear when dealing with nonlinear color spaces such as HSV, and they can be
obtained by changing the space domain of, e.g., an optical flow field to polar
coordinates. For such nonlinear data spaces, we develop algorithms for the
solution of the corresponding second order total variation (TV) type problems
for denoising, inpainting as well as the combination of both. We provide a
convergence analysis and we apply the algorithms to concrete problems.Comment: revised submitted versio
MaxEnt assisted MaxLik tomography
Maximum likelihood estimation is a valuable tool often applied to inverse
problems in quantum theory. Estimation from small data sets can, however, have
non unique solutions. We discuss this problem and propose to use Jaynes maximum
entropy principle to single out the most unbiased maximum-likelihood guess.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, presented at MaxEnt conference in Jackson, WY,
