    Quality of Information in Mobile Crowdsensing: Survey and Research Challenges

    Smartphones have become the most pervasive devices in people's lives, and are clearly transforming the way we live and perceive technology. Today's smartphones benefit from almost ubiquitous Internet connectivity and come equipped with a plethora of inexpensive yet powerful embedded sensors, such as accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, and camera. This unique combination has enabled revolutionary applications based on the mobile crowdsensing paradigm, such as real-time road traffic monitoring, air and noise pollution, crime control, and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. Differently from prior sensing paradigms, humans are now the primary actors of the sensing process, since they become fundamental in retrieving reliable and up-to-date information about the event being monitored. As humans may behave unreliably or maliciously, assessing and guaranteeing Quality of Information (QoI) becomes more important than ever. In this paper, we provide a new framework for defining and enforcing the QoI in mobile crowdsensing, and analyze in depth the current state-of-the-art on the topic.     Crowd-Based Learning of Spatial Fields for the Internet of Things: From Harvesting of Data to Inference

    open4siThe knowledge of spatial distributions of physical quantities, such as radio-frequency (RF) interference, pollution, geomagnetic field magnitude, temperature, humidity, audio, and light intensity, will foster the development of new context-aware applications. For example, knowing the distribution of RF interference might significantly improve cognitive radio systems [1], [2]. Similarly, knowing the spatial variations of the geomagnetic field could support autonomous navigation of robots (including drones) in factories and/or hazardous scenarios [3]. Other examples are related to the estimation of temperature gradients, detection of sources of RF signals, or percentages of certain chemical components. As a result, people could get personalized health-related information based on their exposure to sources of risks (e.g., chemical or pollution). We refer to these spatial distributions of physical quantities as spatial fields.     IAM - Interpolation and Aggregation on the Move: Collaborative Crowdsensing for Spatio-temporal Phenomena

    International audienceCrowdsensing allows citizens to contribute to the monitoring of their living environment using the sensors embedded in their mobile devices, e.g., smartphones. However, crowdsensing at scale involves significant communication, computation, and financial costs due to the dependence on cloud infrastructures for the analysis (e.g., interpolation and aggregation) of spatio-temporal data. This limits the adoption of crowdsensing by activists although sorely needed to inform our knowledge of the environment. As an alternative to the centralized analysis of crowdsensed observations, this paper introduces a fully distributed interpolation-mediated aggregation approach running on smartphones. To achieve so efficiently, we model the interpolation as a distributed tensor completion problem, and we introduce a lightweight aggregation strategy that anticipates the likelihood of future encounters according to the quality of the interpolation. Our approach thus shifts the centralized postprocessing of crowdsensed data to distributed pre-processing on the move, based on opportunistic encounters of crowdsensors through state-of-the-art D2D networking. The evaluation using a dataset of quantitative environmental measurements collected from 550 crowdsensors over 1 year shows that our solution significantly reduces-and may even eliminate-the dependence on the cloud infrastructure, while it incurs a limited resource cost on end devices. Meanwhile, the overall data accuracy remains comparable to that of the centralized approach

    Reputation-aware Trajectory-based Data Mining in the Internet of Things (IoT)

    Internet of Things (IoT) is a critically important technology for the acquisition of spatiotemporally dense data in diverse applications, ranging from environmental monitoring to surveillance systems. Such data helps us improve our transportation systems, monitor our air quality and the spread of diseases, respond to natural disasters, and a bevy of other applications. However, IoT sensor data is error-prone due to a number of reasons: sensors may be deployed in hazardous environments, may deplete their energy resources, have mechanical faults, or maybe become the targets of malicious attacks by adversaries. While previous research has attempted to improve the quality of the IoT data, they are limited in terms of better realization of the sensing context and resiliency against malicious attackers in real time. For instance, the data fusion techniques, which process the data in batches, cannot be applied to time-critical applications as they take a long time to respond. Furthermore, context-awareness allows us to examine the sensing environment and react to environmental changes. While previous research has considered geographical context, no related contemporary work has studied how a variety of sensor context (e.g., terrain elevation, wind speed, and user movement during sensing) can be used along with spatiotemporal relationships for online data prediction. This dissertation aims at developing online methods for data prediction by fusing spatiotemporal and contextual relationships among the participating resource-constrained mobile IoT devices (e.g. smartphones, smart watches, and fitness tracking devices). To achieve this goal, we first introduce a data prediction mechanism that considers the spatiotemporal and contextual relationship among the sensors. Second, we develop a real-time outlier detection approach stemming from a window-based sub-trajectory clustering method for finding behavioral movement similarity in terms of space, time, direction, and location semantics. We relax the prior assumption of cooperative sensors in the concluding section. Finally, we develop a reputation-aware context-based data fusion mechanism by exploiting inter sensor-category correlations. On one hand, this method is capable of defending against false data injection by differentiating malicious and honest participants based on their reported data in real time. On the other hand, this mechanism yields a lower data prediction error rate

    Participatory Patterns in an International Air Quality Monitoring Initiative

    The issue of sustainability is at the top of the political and societal agenda, being considered of extreme importance and urgency. Human individual action impacts the environment both locally (e.g., local air/water quality, noise disturbance) and globally (e.g., climate change, resource use). Urban environments represent a crucial example, with an increasing realization that the most effective way of producing a change is involving the citizens themselves in monitoring campaigns (a citizen science bottom-up approach). This is possible by developing novel technologies and IT infrastructures enabling large citizen participation. Here, in the wider framework of one of the first such projects, we show results from an international competition where citizens were involved in mobile air pollution monitoring using low cost sensing devices, combined with a web-based game to monitor perceived levels of pollution. Measures of shift in perceptions over the course of the campaign are provided, together with insights into participatory patterns emerging from this study. Interesting effects related to inertia and to direct involvement in measurement activities rather than indirect information exposure are also highlighted, indicating that direct involvement can enhance learning and environmental awareness.     Crowd-sensing our Smart Cities: a Platform for Noise Monitoring and Acoustic Urban Planning

    Environmental pollution and the corresponding control measurements put in place to tackle it play a significant role in determining the actual quality of life in modern cities. Amongst the several pollutant that have to be faced on a daily basis, urban noise represent one of the most widely known for its already ascertained health-related issues. However, no systematic noise management and control activities are performed in the majority of European cities due to a series of limiting factors (e.g., expensive monitoring equipment, few available technician, scarce awareness of the problem in city managers). The recent advances in the Smart City model, which is being progressively adopted in many cities, nowadays offer multiple possibilities to improve the effectiveness in this area. The Mobile Crowd Sensing paradigm allows collecting data streams from smartphone built-in sensors on large geographical scales at no cost and without involving expert data captors, provided that an adequate IT infrastructure has been implemented to manage properly the gathered measurements. In this paper, we present an improved version of a MCS-based platform, named City Soundscape, which allows exploiting any Android-based device as a portable acoustic monitoring station and that offers city managers an effective and straightforward tool for planning Noise Reduction Interventions (NRIs) within their cities.     Urban rörlighet anses ofta vara en av de främsta möjliggörarna för en hållbar statsutveckling. Idag skulle det dock kräva ett betydande skifte mot renare och effektivare stadstransporter vilket skulle stödja ökad social och ekonomisk koncentration av resurser i städerna. En viktig prioritet för städer runt om i världen är att stödja medborgarnas rörlighet inom stadsmiljöer medan samtidigt minska trafikstockningar, olyckor och föroreningar. Att utveckla en effektivare och grönare (eller med ett ord; smartare) stadsrörlighet är en av de svåraste problemen att bemöta för stora metropoler. I denna avhandling närmar vi oss problemet från det snabba utvecklingsperspektivet av ITlandskapet i städer vilket möjliggör byggandet av rörlighetslösningar utan stora stora investeringar eller sofistikerad sensortenkik. I synnerhet föreslår vi utnyttjandet av den mobila rörlighetsavkännings, eng. Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS), paradigmen i vilken befolkningen exploaterar sin mobilkommunikation och/eller mobilasensorer med syftet att frivilligt samla, distribuera, lokalt processera och analysera geospecifik information. Rörlighetavkänningssdata (t.ex. händelser, trafikintensitet, buller och luftföroreningar etc.) inhämtad från frivilliga i befolkningen kan ge värdefull information om aktuella rörelsesförhållanden i stad vilka, med adekvata databehandlingsalgoriter, kan användas för att planera människors rörelseflöden inom stadsmiljön. Såtillvida kombineras i denna avhandling två mycket lovande smarta rörlighetsmöjliggörare, eng. Smart Mobility Enablers, nämligen MCS och rese/ruttplanering. Vi kan därmed till viss utsträckning sammanföra forskningsutmaningar från dessa två delar. Vi väljer att separera våra forskningsmål i två delar, dvs forskningssteg: (1) arkitektoniska utmaningar vid design av MCS-system och (2) algoritmiska utmaningar för tillämpningar av MCS-driven ruttplanering. Vi ämnar att visa en logisk forskningsprogression över tiden, med avstamp i mänskligt dirigerade rörelseavkänningssystem som MCS och ett avslut i automatiserade ruttoptimeringsalgoritmer skräddarsydda för specifika MCS-applikationer. Även om vi förlitar oss på heuristiska lösningar och algoritmer för NP-svåra ruttproblem förlitar vi oss på äkta applikationer med syftet att visa på fördelarna med algoritm- och infrastrukturförslagen.La movilidad urbana es considerada una de las principales desencadenantes de un desarrollo urbano sostenible. Sin embargo, hoy en día se requiere una transición hacia un transporte urbano más limpio y más eficiente que soporte una concentración de recursos sociales y económicos cada vez mayor en las ciudades. Una de las principales prioridades para las ciudades de todo el mundo es facilitar la movilidad de los ciudadanos dentro de los entornos urbanos, al mismo tiempo que se reduce la congestión, los accidentes y la contaminación. Sin embargo, desarrollar una movilidad urbana más eficiente y más verde (o en una palabra, más inteligente) es uno de los temas más difíciles de afrontar para las grandes áreas metropolitanas. En esta tesis, abordamos este problema desde la perspectiva de un panorama TIC en rápida evolución que nos permite construir movilidad sin la necesidad de grandes inversiones ni sofisticadas tecnologías de sensores. En particular, proponemos aprovechar el paradigma Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) en el que los ciudadanos utilizan sus teléfonos móviles y dispositivos, para nosotros recopilar, procesar y analizar localmente información georreferenciada, distribuida voluntariamente. Los datos de movilidad recopilados de ciudadanos que voluntariamente quieren compartirlos (por ejemplo, eventos, intensidad del tráfico, ruido y contaminación del aire, etc.) pueden proporcionar información valiosa sobre las condiciones de movilidad actuales en la ciudad, que con el algoritmo de procesamiento de datos adecuado, pueden utilizarse para enrutar y gestionar el flujo de gente en entornos urbanos. Por lo tanto, en esta tesis combinamos dos prometedoras fuentes de movilidad inteligente: MCS y la planificación de viajes/rutas, uniendo en cierta medida los distintos desafíos de investigación. Hemos dividido nuestros objetivos de investigación en dos etapas: (1) Desafíos arquitectónicos en el diseño de sistemas MCS y (2) Desafíos algorítmicos en la planificación de rutas aprovechando la información del MCS. Nuestro objetivo es demostrar una progresión lógica de la investigación a lo largo del tiempo, comenzando desde los fundamentos de los sistemas de detección centrados en personas, como el MCS, hasta los algoritmos de optimización de rutas diseñados específicamente para la aplicación de estos. Si bien nos centramos en algoritmos y heurísticas para resolver problemas de enrutamiento de clase NP-hard, utilizamos ejemplos de aplicaciones en el mundo real para mostrar las ventajas de los algoritmos e infraestructuras propuestas

    Identifying Damage-Sensitive Spatial Vibration Characteristics of Bridges from Widespread Smartphone Data

    The knowledge gap in the expected and actual conditions of bridges has created worldwide deficits in infrastructure service and funding challenges. Despite rapid advances over the past four decades, sensing technology is still not a part of bridge inspection protocols. Every time a vehicle with a mobile device passes over a bridge, there is an opportunity to capture potentially important structural response information at a very low cost. Prior work has shown how bridge modal frequencies can be accurately determined with crowdsourced smartphone-vehicle trip (SVT) data in real-world settings. However, modal frequencies provide very limited insight on the structural health conditions of the bridge. Here, we present a novel method to extract spatial vibration characteristics of real bridges, namely, absolute mode shapes, from crowdsourced SVT data. These characteristics have a demonstrable sensitivity to structural damage and provide superior, yet complementary, indicators of bridge condition. Furthermore, they are useful in the development of accurate mathematical models of the structural system and help reconcile the differences between models and real systems. We demonstrate successful applications on four very different bridges, with span lengths ranging from about 30 to 1300 meters, collectively representing about one quarter of bridges in the US. Supplementary work applies this computational approach to accurately detect simulated bridge damage entirely from crowdsourced SVT data in an unprecedentedly timely fashion.
