Single-shot layered reflectance separation using a polarized light field camera
We present a novel computational photography technique for single shot separation of diffuse/specular reflectance as well as novel angular domain separation of layered reflectance. Our solution consists of a two-way polarized light field (TPLF) camera which simultaneously captures two orthogonal states of polarization. A single photograph of a subject acquired with the TPLF camera under polarized illumination then enables standard separation of diffuse (depolarizing) and polarization preserving specular reflectance using light field sampling. We further demonstrate that the acquired data also enables novel angular separation of layered reflectance including separation of specular reflectance and single scattering in the polarization preserving component, and separation of shallow scattering from deep scattering in the depolarizing component. We apply our approach for efficient acquisition of facial reflectance including diffuse and specular normal maps, and novel separation of photometric normals into layered reflectance normals for layered facial renderings. We demonstrate our proposed single shot layered reflectance separation to be comparable to an existing multi-shot technique that relies on structured lighting while achieving separation results under a variety of illumination conditions
CNN-based Real-time Dense Face Reconstruction with Inverse-rendered Photo-realistic Face Images
With the powerfulness of convolution neural networks (CNN), CNN based face
reconstruction has recently shown promising performance in reconstructing
detailed face shape from 2D face images. The success of CNN-based methods
relies on a large number of labeled data. The state-of-the-art synthesizes such
data using a coarse morphable face model, which however has difficulty to
generate detailed photo-realistic images of faces (with wrinkles). This paper
presents a novel face data generation method. Specifically, we render a large
number of photo-realistic face images with different attributes based on
inverse rendering. Furthermore, we construct a fine-detailed face image dataset
by transferring different scales of details from one image to another. We also
construct a large number of video-type adjacent frame pairs by simulating the
distribution of real video data. With these nicely constructed datasets, we
propose a coarse-to-fine learning framework consisting of three convolutional
networks. The networks are trained for real-time detailed 3D face
reconstruction from monocular video as well as from a single image. Extensive
experimental results demonstrate that our framework can produce high-quality
reconstruction but with much less computation time compared to the
state-of-the-art. Moreover, our method is robust to pose, expression and

Recovering facial shape using a statistical model of surface normal direction
In this paper, we show how a statistical model of facial shape can be embedded within a shape-from-shading algorithm. We describe how facial shape can be captured using a statistical model of variations in surface normal direction. To construct this model, we make use of the azimuthal equidistant projection to map the distribution of surface normals from the polar representation on a unit sphere to Cartesian points on a local tangent plane. The distribution of surface normal directions is captured using the covariance matrix for the projected point positions. The eigenvectors of the covariance matrix define the modes of shape-variation in the fields of transformed surface normals. We show how this model can be trained using surface normal data acquired from range images and how to fit the model to intensity images of faces using constraints on the surface normal direction provided by Lambert's law. We demonstrate that the combination of a global statistical constraint and local irradiance constraint yields an efficient and accurate approach to facial shape recovery and is capable of recovering fine local surface details. We assess the accuracy of the technique on a variety of images with ground truth and real-world images
Towards High-Fidelity 3D Face Reconstruction from In-the-Wild Images Using Graph Convolutional Networks
3D Morphable Model (3DMM) based methods have achieved great success in
recovering 3D face shapes from single-view images. However, the facial textures
recovered by such methods lack the fidelity as exhibited in the input images.
Recent work demonstrates high-quality facial texture recovering with generative
networks trained from a large-scale database of high-resolution UV maps of face
textures, which is hard to prepare and not publicly available. In this paper,
we introduce a method to reconstruct 3D facial shapes with high-fidelity
textures from single-view images in-the-wild, without the need to capture a
large-scale face texture database. The main idea is to refine the initial
texture generated by a 3DMM based method with facial details from the input
image. To this end, we propose to use graph convolutional networks to
reconstruct the detailed colors for the mesh vertices instead of reconstructing
the UV map. Experiments show that our method can generate high-quality results
and outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both qualitative and quantitative

Fitting 3D Morphable Models using Local Features
In this paper, we propose a novel fitting method that uses local image
features to fit a 3D Morphable Model to 2D images. To overcome the obstacle of
optimising a cost function that contains a non-differentiable feature
extraction operator, we use a learning-based cascaded regression method that
learns the gradient direction from data. The method allows to simultaneously
solve for shape and pose parameters. Our method is thoroughly evaluated on
Morphable Model generated data and first results on real data are presented.
Compared to traditional fitting methods, which use simple raw features like
pixel colour or edge maps, local features have been shown to be much more
robust against variations in imaging conditions. Our approach is unique in that
we are the first to use local features to fit a Morphable Model.
Because of the speed of our method, it is applicable for realtime

SfSNet: Learning Shape, Reflectance and Illuminance of Faces in the Wild
We present SfSNet, an end-to-end learning framework for producing an accurate
decomposition of an unconstrained human face image into shape, reflectance and
illuminance. SfSNet is designed to reflect a physical lambertian rendering
model. SfSNet learns from a mixture of labeled synthetic and unlabeled real
world images. This allows the network to capture low frequency variations from
synthetic and high frequency details from real images through the photometric
reconstruction loss. SfSNet consists of a new decomposition architecture with
residual blocks that learns a complete separation of albedo and normal. This is
used along with the original image to predict lighting. SfSNet produces
significantly better quantitative and qualitative results than state-of-the-art
methods for inverse rendering and independent normal and illumination

FML: Face Model Learning from Videos
Monocular image-based 3D reconstruction of faces is a long-standing problem
in computer vision. Since image data is a 2D projection of a 3D face, the
resulting depth ambiguity makes the problem ill-posed. Most existing methods
rely on data-driven priors that are built from limited 3D face scans. In
contrast, we propose multi-frame video-based self-supervised training of a deep
network that (i) learns a face identity model both in shape and appearance
while (ii) jointly learning to reconstruct 3D faces. Our face model is learned
using only corpora of in-the-wild video clips collected from the Internet. This
virtually endless source of training data enables learning of a highly general
3D face model. In order to achieve this, we propose a novel multi-frame
consistency loss that ensures consistent shape and appearance across multiple
frames of a subject's face, thus minimizing depth ambiguity. At test time we
can use an arbitrary number of frames, so that we can perform both monocular as
