    An economic energy approach for queries on data centers

    Energy consumption is an issue that involves all of us, both as individuals and as members of a society, and covers all our areas of activity. It is something so broad that its impact has important reflections on our social, cultural and financial structures. The domain of software, and in particular database systems, is not an exception. Although it seems to be a little bit strange to study the energy consumption of just one query, when we consider the execution of a a few thousand queries per second, quickly we see the importance of the querying consumption in the monthly account of any company that has a conventional data center. To demonstrate the energy consumption of queries in data centers, we idealized a small dashboard for monitoring and analyzing the sales of a company, and implemented all the queries needed for populating it and ensuring its operation. The queries were organized into two groups, oriented especially to two distinct database management systems: one relational (MySQL) and one non relational (Neo4J). The goal is to evaluate the energy consumption of different types of queries, and at the same time compare it in terms of relational and non-relational database approaches. This paper relates the process we implemented to set up the energy consumption application scenario, measure the energy consumption of each query, and present our first preliminary results

    A Project-based Quantification of BIM Benefits

    In the construction industry, research is being carried out to look for feasible methods and technologies to cut down project costs and waste. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is certainly currently a promising technology/method that can achieve this. The output of the construction industry has a considerable scale; however, the concentration of the industry and the level of informatization are still not high. There is still a large gap in terms of productivity between the construction industry and other industries. Due to the lack of first-hand data regarding how much of an effect can be genuinely had by BIM in real cases, it is unrealistic for construction stakeholders to take the risk of widely adopting BIM. This paper focuses on the methodological quantification (through a case study approach) of BIM’s benefits in building construction resource management and real-time costs control, in contrast to traditional non-BIM technologies. Through the use of BIM technology for the dynamic querying and statistical analysis of construction schedules, engineering, resources and costs, the three implementations considered demonstrate how BIM can facilitate the comprehensive grasp of a project’s implementation and progress, identify and solve the contradictions and conflicts between construction resources and costs controls, reduce project over-spends and protect the supply of resources

    A framework for the management of environmental information in Higher Education Institutions

    Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are not immune to the global environment problems. An increasing awareness of the environmental responsibilities of HEIs has led researchers to investigate the role of environmental information and Environmental Management Information Systems (EMISs) in HEIs. EMISs play a major role in environmental management and environmental decision making in HEIs. Internationally, an increasing number of HEIs are embracing the concept of ‘sustainable HEIs’ by undertaking green campus initiatives. HEIs often use diverse information systems, some of which are manual systems, proven to be inefficient and this gives rise to redundant and inconsistent databases which result in non-compliance with regulations, confusion and lack of co-ordinated effort. There is therefore need for an integrated, comprehensive software system and framework which can assist with the efficient management of environmental information at South African HEIs. This study fills a gap in the field of environmental sustainability at HEIs as the evaluation of existing sustainability programs has shown common weakness such as: Failure to effectively set baselines, flaws in data acquisition and management and missing documentation. The aim of this study is to propose a framework for Environmental Information Management (EIM) in HEIs. The framework includes guidelines related to the components of the framework which can also be used to perform a gap analysis to facilitate the improved design of effective and efficient EIM processes and data stores. The Design Science Research (DSR) methodology is the research methodology used in the development of the two artifacts of this study namely: The EIM framework for HEIs and an EMIS prototype to serve as proof of concept. Problem identification and motivation was the first activity of the DSR which was done through a rigorous literature review and an investigation and evaluation of extant systems. This resulted in the design of an initial EIM framework for HEIs. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) was the HEI used as the case study. The EIM framework was applied at NMMU and this enabled the researcher to understand the current As-Is EIM processes at NMMU and this resulted in clear objectives of a solution. The EMIS prototype (data warehouse) was then designed and implemented based on the theoretical framework. Three sets of evaluations were done to determine the acceptance of the EIM framework for HEIs and the performance of the EMIS prototype. The EIM framework was generally positively accepted and minor suggestions were made. An updated version of the EIM framework was proposed and evaluated. The experimental evaluation results showed that the EMIS prototype was efficient and effective. The contribution of this study is an EIM framework for HEIs and an implementation of an EMIS (EnviroDW) at NMMU that could be utilised by other HEIs

    É possível assistir nos dias de hoje, a um processo tecnológico evolutivo acentuado por toda a parte do globo. No caso das empresas, quer as pequenas, médias ou de grandes dimensões, estão cada vez mais dependentes dos sistemas informatizados para realizar os seus processos de negócio, e consequentemente à geração de informação referente aos negócios e onde, muitas das vezes, os dados não têm qualquer relacionamento entre si. A maioria dos sistemas convencionais informáticos não são projetados para gerir e armazenar informações estratégicas, impossibilitando assim que esta sirva de apoio como recurso estratégico. Portanto, as decisões são tomadas com base na experiência dos administradores, quando poderiam serem baseadas em factos históricos armazenados pelos diversos sistemas. Genericamente, as organizações possuem muitos dados, mas na maioria dos casos extraem pouca informação, o que é um problema em termos de mercados competitivos. Como as organizações procuram evoluir e superar a concorrência nas tomadas de decisão, surge neste contexto o termo Business Intelligence(BI). A GisGeo Information Systems é uma empresa que desenvolve software baseado em SIG (sistemas de informação geográfica) recorrendo a uma filosofia de ferramentas open-source. O seu principal produto baseia-se na localização geográfica dos vários tipos de viaturas, na recolha de dados, e consequentemente a sua análise (quilómetros percorridos, duração de uma viagem entre dois pontos definidos, consumo de combustível, etc.). Neste âmbito surge o tema deste projeto que tem objetivo de dar uma perspetiva diferente aos dados existentes, cruzando os conceitos BI com o sistema implementado na empresa de acordo com a sua filosofia. Neste projeto são abordados alguns dos conceitos mais importantes adjacentes a BI como, por exemplo, modelo dimensional, data Warehouse, o processo ETL e OLAP, seguindo a metodologia de Ralph Kimball. São também estudadas algumas das principais ferramentas open-source existentes no mercado, assim como quais as suas vantagens/desvantagens relativamente entre elas. Em conclusão, é então apresentada a solução desenvolvida de acordo com os critérios enumerados pela empresa como prova de conceito da aplicabilidade da área Business Intelligence ao ramo de Sistemas de informação Geográfica (SIG), recorrendo a uma ferramenta open-source que suporte visualização dos dados através de dashboards.Nowadays it is possible to watch a sharp evolutionary process technology throughout the globe. For businesses, whether small, medium or large, are increasingly dependent on information systems to conduct their business processes, and hence the generation of information regarding business and where often the data does not have any relationship therewith. Most conventional computer systems are not designed to manage and store strategic information, thus making it impossible to support this as a strategic resource. Therefore, decisions are made based on the experience of the managers, when they could be based on historical facts stored by different systems. Generally, organizations have a lot of data, but in most cases draw little information, which is a problem in terms of competitive markets. As organizations seek to evolve and outperform the competition in decision-making, it arises the term Business Intelligence (BI in this context). The GisGeo Information Systems is IT Company which develops its own software based on GIS (Geographic information systems) using the philosophy of open-source. Its main product is based on the geographical location of various types of vehicles, collecting data, and consequently its analysis (kilometres travelled, duration of a trip between two set points, fuel consumption, etc.). The theme of this project arises in this context, which has aimed to give a different perspective to the existing data, crossing the BI concepts with the system implemented in the company according to its philosophy. In this project the adjacent BI concepts such as dimensional model, data warehouse, ET Land OLAP process, following the methodology of Ralph Kimball are generally addressed. Some of the main open-source tools are also studied on the market, as well as their advantages/disadvantages in relation to one another. In conclusion, a solution developed in accordance with the criteria listed by the company, is presented as proof of concept of the applicability of the Business Intelligence at the branch GIS, drawing on an open-source support data visualization tool through dashboards

These companies are "creating shared value" by using their core business processes and practices to enhance the competitiveness of companies while improving social and environmental conditions. The concept of Creating Shared Value (CSV) was introduced by the co-founders of FSG, Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter and senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School Mark Kramer, in several Harvard Business Review articles (most recently in January/February 2011). FSG's research in India has identified a number of highly innovative examples of shared value. In this paper, we highlight these examples and call on corporations, especially our largest ones, to lead the charge toward a strategy for growth that benefits all our citizens

    Integrated Models and Tools for Design and Management of Global Supply Chain

    In modern and global supply chain, the increasing trend toward product variety, level of service, short delivery delay and response time to consumers, highlight the importance to set and configure smooth and efficient logistic processes and operations. In order to comply such purposes the supply chain management (SCM) theory entails a wide set of models, algorithms, procedure, tools and best practices for the design, the management and control of articulated supply chain networks and logistics nodes. The purpose of this Ph.D. dissertation is going in detail on the principle aspects and concerns of supply chain network and warehousing systems, by proposing and illustrating useful methods, procedures and support-decision tools for the design and management of real instance applications, such those currently face by enterprises. In particular, after a comprehensive literature review of the principal warehousing issues and entities, the manuscript focuses on design top-down procedure for both less-than-unit-load OPS and unit-load storage systems. For both, decision-support software platforms are illustrated as useful tools to address the optimization of the warehousing performances and efficiency metrics. The development of such interfaces enables to test the effectiveness of the proposed hierarchical top-down procedure with huge real case studies, taken by industry applications. Whether the large part of the manuscript deals with micro concerns of warehousing nodes, also macro issues and aspects related to the planning, design, and management of the whole supply chain are enquired and discussed. The integration of macro criticalities, such as the design of the supply chain infrastructure and the placement of the logistic nodes, with micro concerns, such the design of warehousing nodes and the management of material handling, is addressed through the definition of integrated models and procedures, involving the overall supply chain and the whole product life cycle. A new integrated perspective should be applied in study and planning of global supply chains. Each aspect of the reality influences the others. Each product consumed by a customer tells a story, made by activities, transformations, handling, processes, traveling around the world.     Audit Template for Inland Port Sustainability

    This report serves as an assessment of port sustainability and its potential applications for the inland river ports of Kentucky and the surrounding region. The report discusses and defines sustainability, both generally as it relates to business and industry and specifically as it relates to the port industry. Given the unique nature of the inland port industry, the report reviews lessons learned from 11 port site visits conducted by Kentucky Transportation Center in 2012, primarily at major U.S. coastal ports but also representative inland ports. KTC’s analysis identifies the sustainability challenges facing various domestic and international ports, and what policy and operating initiatives are being undertaken to meet these challenges. This report then discusses KTC’s progress in tailoring the sustainability process identified during these visits to the inland port industry. Field visits to 13 public ports along the Ohio River were conducted in order to develop a sustainability self‐assessment tool, which took the lessons learned at coastal ports and large‐scale inland ports and applied them to the inland ports of Kentucky and the surrounding region. From these visits and the associated research, an audit template has been developed that allows inland port operators to assess and improve sustainability levels. The wealth of information compiled in this report, along with the associated appendices, will prove invaluable to the inland port industry. The research relayed to the industry has already proven to be a boon to the ports that participated in the project. The preliminary results indicate that ports along the region’s inland waterways would have little difficulty improving their sustainability profiles at low expense, so long as they follow the advice laid out by this report and the audit template

    ICT tools for data management and analysis to support decisional process oriented to sustainable agri-food chains

    Il settore agroalimentare sta affrontando delle sfide globali. La prima riguarda sfamare la popolazione mondiale che nel 2050, secondo le proiezioni delle Nazioni Unite, raggiungerà quota 9,3 miliardi di persone. La seconda sfida riguarda la richiesta da parte dei consumatori di prodotti ottenuti da filiere agroalimentari sempre più sostenibili, sicure e trasparenti. In particolare, l’Agricoltura sostenibile è una tecnica di gestione in grado di preservare la diversità biologica, la produttività, la capacità di rigenerazione, la vitalità e l’abilità alla funzione di un ecosistema agricolo, assicurandone, oggi e in futuro, le funzioni ecologiche, economiche e sociali a livello locale, nazionale ed globale, senza danneggiare altri ecosistemi. Quindi, per fronteggiare la sfida dell’agricoltura sostenibile, gli agricoltori devono aumentare la qualità e la quantità della produzione, riducendo l’impatto ambientale attraverso nuovi strumenti e nuove strategie di gestione. Questo lavoro analizza l’integrazione nel settore agroalimentare di alcune tecnologie e metodologie ICT per l’acquisizione, gestione e analisi dei dati, come la tecnologia RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification), i FMIS (Farm Management Information Systems), i DW (Data Warehouse) e l’approccio OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing). Infine, l’adozione delle tecnologie ICT da parte di vere aziende è stata valutata attraverso un questionario. Al riguardo dell’adozione delle tecnologie RFID, questo lavoro analizza l’opportunità di trasferimento tecnologico relativo al monitoraggio e controllo dei prodotti agroalimentari tramite l’utilizzo di sensori innovativi, intelligenti e miniaturizzati. Le informazioni riguardanti lo stato del prodotto sono trasferite in tempo reale in wireless, come previsto dalla tecnologia RFID. In particolare, due soluzioni RFID sono state analizzate, evidenziando vantaggi e punti critici in confronto ai classici sistemi per assicurare la tracciabilità e la qualità dei prodotti agroalimentari. Quindi, questo lavoro analizza la possibilità di sviluppare una struttura che combina le tecnologie della Business Intelligence con i principi della Protezione Integrata (IPM) per aiutare gli agricoltori nel processo decisionale, andando a diminuire l’impatto ambientale ed aumentare la performance produttiva. L’IPM richiede di utilizzare simultaneamente diverse tecniche di protezione delle colture per il controllo dei parassiti e patogeni tramite un approccio ecologico ed economico. Il sistema di BI proposto è chiamato BI4IPM e combina l’approccio OLTP (On-Line Transaction Processing) con quello OLAP per verificare il rispetto dei disciplinari di produzione integrata. BI4IPM è stato testato con dati provenienti da vere aziende olivicole pugliesi. L’olivo è una delle principali colture a livello globale e la Puglia è la prima regione produttrice in Italia, con un gran numero di aziende che generano dati sull’IPM. Le strategie di protezione delle colture sono correlate alle condizioni climatiche, considerando la forte relazione tra clima, colture e parassiti. Quindi, in questo lavoro è presentato un nuovo e avanzato modello OLAP che integra il GSI (Growing Season Index), un modello fenologico, per comparare indirettamente le aziende agricole dal punto di vista climatico. Il sistema proposto permette di analizzare dati IPM di diverse aziende agricole che presentano le stesse condizioni fenologiche in un anno al fine di individuare best practices e di evidenziare e spiegare pratiche differenti adottate da aziende che lavorano in differenti condizioni climatiche. Infine, è stata effettuata un’indagine al fine di capire come le aziende agricole della Basilicata si raggruppano in funzione del livello di innovazione adottato. È stato utilizzato un questionario per domandare alle aziende se adottano strumenti ICT, ed eventualmente in quale processo produttivo o di management vengano usati. È stata quindi effettuata un’analisi cluster sui dati raccolti. I risultati mostrano che, usando il metodo di clustering k-means, appaiono due gruppi: gli innovatori e gli altri. Mentre, applicando la rappresentazione boxlot, si ottengono 3 gruppi: innovatori, utilizzatori precoci e ritardatari.The Agri-Food sector is facing global challenges. The first issue concerns feeding a world population that in 2050, according to United Nations projections, will reach 9.3 billion people. The second challenge is the request by consumers for high quality products obtained by more sustainable, safely and clear agri-food chains. In particular, the Sustainable agriculture is a management strategy able to preserve the biological diversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and ability to function of an agricultural ecosystem, ensuring, today and in the future, significant ecological, economic and social functions at the local, national and global scales, without harming other ecosystems. Therefore, to face the challenge of the sustainable agriculture, farmers need to increase quality and quantity of the production, reducing the environmental impact through new management strategies and tools. This work explores the integration of several ICT technologies and methodologies in the agri-food sector for the data acquisition, management and analysis, such as RFID technology, Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS), Data Warehouse (DW) and On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP). Finally, the adoption of the ICT technologies by real farms is evaluated through a survey. Regarding the adoption of the RFID technology, this work explores an opportunity for technology transfer related to the monitoring and control of agri-food products, based on the use of miniaturized, smart and innovative sensors. The information concerning to the state of the product is transferred in real time in a wireless way, according to the RFID technology. In particular, two technical solutions involving RFID are provided, highlighting the advantages and critical points referred to the normal system used to ensure the traceability and the quality of the agri-food products. Therefore, this work explores the possibility of developing a framework that combines business intelligence (BI) technologies with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles to support farmers in the decisional process, thereby decreasing environmental cost and improving production performance. The IPM requires the simultaneous use of different crop protection techniques to control pests through an ecological and economic approach. The proposed BI system is called BI4IPM, and it combines on-line transaction processing (OLTP) with OLAP to verify adherence to the IPM technical specifications. BI4IPM is tested with data from real Apulian olive crop farms. Olive tree is one of the most important crop at global scale and Apulia is the first olive-producing region in Italy, with a huge amount of farms that generate IPM data. The crop protection strategies are correlated to the climate conditions considering the very important relation among climate, crops and pests. Therefore, in this work is presented a new advanced OLAP model integrating the Growing Season Index (GSI), a phenology model, to compare indirectly the farms by a climatic point of view. The proposed system allows analysing IPM data of different farms having the same phenological conditions over a year to understand some best practices and to highlight and explain different practices adopted by farms working in different climatic conditions. Finally, a survey aimed at investigating how Lucania' farms cluster according to the level of innovation adopted was performed. It was used a questionnaire for asking if farms adopt ICTs tools and, in case, what type they involved in managing and/or production processes. It has been done a cluster analysis on collected data. Results show that, using k-means clustering method, appear two clusters: innovators, remaining groups. While, using boxplot representation, clustered three groups: innovators, early adopters and laggards
