    Digital design of medical replicas via desktop systems: shape evaluation of colon parts

    In this paper, we aim at providing results concerning the application of desktop systems for rapid prototyping of medical replicas that involve complex shapes, as, for example, folds of a colon. Medical replicas may assist preoperative planning or tutoring in surgery to better understand the interaction among pathology and organs. Major goals of the paper concern with guiding the digital design workflow of the replicas and understanding their final performance, according to the requirements asked by the medics (shape accuracy, capability of seeing both inner and outer details, and support and possible interfacing with other organs). In particular, after the analysis of these requirements, we apply digital design for colon replicas, adopting two desktop systems. ,e experimental results confirm that the proposed preprocessing strategy is able to conduct to the manufacturing of colon replicas divided in self-supporting segments, minimizing the supports during printing. ,is allows also to reach an acceptable level of final quality, according to the request of having a 3D presurgery overview of the problems. ,ese replicas are compared through reverse engineering acquisitions made by a structured-light system, to assess the achieved shape and dimensional accuracy. Final results demonstrate that low-cost desktop systems, coupled with proper strategy of preprocessing, may have shape deviation in the range of ±1 mm, good for physical manipulations during medical diagnosis and explanation

    The development and implementation of a reverse engineering method for near net shape parts

    This research presents a new method for the reverse engineering of Near Net Shape (NNS) parts that bridge the current 3D scanning and Rapid Prototyping technologies. Near Net Shape is a group of manufacturing technologies that includes forging, casting, hot isostatic pressing, and additive manufacturing. This research focuses on casting process and provides a software tool along with the new method for reverse engineering a legacy casting design to the “as was” casted state instead of the “as is” current state, and at the same time, reducing the cost and time for repairing a legacy casting part. The three main objective for this research is to 1.Create a new reverse engineering method 2.Develop a software tool that is designed for feature free model editing 3.Validate the process through metal casting. The Point Cloud Library is applied for assisting point cloud processing and feature free model editing. A series of algorithms is developed for draft adding and pattern generation for the process of casting. The Rapid Pattern Manufacturing system developed in Iowa State University, Rapid Manufacturing and Prototyping Lab is applied for pattern manufacturing. This method is validated to be correct and able to reverse engineer legacy casting parts rapidly and economically through a metal casting process. The layout of this thesis is as follows: Chapter 1: provides introduction, background, research problem statement and objective of this research. Chapter 2: a literature review for the current reverse engineering method and introduces the modules of point cloud library that are used in this research. Chapter 3: presents the overview of method and algorithms that developed for this method in detail. Chapter 4: presents the implementation of this method and gives the analysis of the demo metal casting process. Chapter 5: provides future work and conclusions

    Computer-aided Reverse Engineering for Rapid Replacement of Parts

    Indigenous product development using conventional means involves a relatively long leadtime and cost, especially for replacing worn out and broken parts. This paper presentsmethodologies and technologies for computer-aided reverse engineering, illustrated by a reallifecase study of an aluminium alloy separator body of a hydraulic filter assembly for the specialarmy vehicle. It involved reconstruction of part geometry using 3-D scanning, materialidentification using spectrometry, casting process optimisation using simulation software, andfabrication of prototype and tooling using rapid prototyping systems. It was found that thefabrication of wax patterns directly from reverse-engineered CAD data in a suitable rapidprototyping system (such as thermojet), followed by conventional investment casting, gives areliable and economic route for rapid development of one-off intricate parts for the replacementpurpose

    From 3D Models to 3D Prints: an Overview of the Processing Pipeline

    Due to the wide diffusion of 3D printing technologies, geometric algorithms for Additive Manufacturing are being invented at an impressive speed. Each single step, in particular along the Process Planning pipeline, can now count on dozens of methods that prepare the 3D model for fabrication, while analysing and optimizing geometry and machine instructions for various objectives. This report provides a classification of this huge state of the art, and elicits the relation between each single algorithm and a list of desirable objectives during Process Planning. The objectives themselves are listed and discussed, along with possible needs for tradeoffs. Additive Manufacturing technologies are broadly categorized to explicitly relate classes of devices and supported features.
