Early detection is very important for the survival rate of BC, because the smaller the local extension of the neoplasia, the better the output of the surgical treatments employed. Besides, early detection increases the possibility of preserving the breast and decreases the probability of needing more invasive treatments [Secretaría de Salud, 2007, Alteri et al., 2011]. Mammography is currently the standard procedure employed for breast screening programs around the world. Nevertheless, its efficiency has been questioned lately because: (i) it generates many abnormal findings not related to cancer, (ii) it requires irradiating the patient and (iii) it has low specificity with dense breasts [Santen and Mansel, 2005]. Consequently, complementary techniques to mammography are being proposed to improve the detection and characterization of BC. Among these techniques, is the Ultrasound Computed Tomography (USCT), in reflection mode (which provides qualitative maps with the concentration of scatterers in the tissue), and transmission mode (which provides quantitative maps of the sound speed (SS) and the acoustic attenuation (AA) of the tissues). The images provided by the transmission modality have been proposed for BC detection as they can improve the detectability of malignancies in the breast [Mast, 2000, Duric et al., 2009]...El cáncer de mama (CM) es el cáncer más mortal entre las mujeres europeas, y el segundo más común en Estados Unidos [World Cancer Report, 2008]. La detección temprana es un factor que condiciona en gran medida la tasa de supervivencia a esta enfermedad, ya que a menor tamaño de la neoplasia detectada, mejores resultados pueden esperarse para los tratamientos quirúrgicos que se realicen. Además, la detección temprana aumenta la posibilidad de conservar la mama después de la cirugía y disminuye la necesidad de emplear otros tratamientos más invasivos[Secretaría de Salud, 2007, Alteri et al., 2011]. La mamografía es actualmente el procedimiento estándar que se emplea para el cribado del CM. Sin embargo, en los últimas años su eficiencia está siendo muy cuestionada por varios factores: (i) alta tasa de falsos positivos, (ii) requiere la irradiación del paciente y (iii) baja especificidad en mamas densas 2. Debido a lo anterior, para mejorar la detección y caracterización del CM se han propuesto varias técnicas complementarias. Entre ellas está la tomografía ultrasónica (TU), que es una técnica en desarrollo que presenta dos modalidades principales: la reflexión (proporciona mapas cualitativos de la concentración de dispersores en el tejido) y la transmisión (proporciona mapas cuantitativos de la velocidad y atenuación del sonido en el tejido).     A novel parallel algorithm for surface editing and its FPGA implementation

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophySurface modelling and editing is one of important subjects in computer graphics. Decades of research in computer graphics has been carried out on both low-level, hardware-related algorithms and high-level, abstract software. Success of computer graphics has been seen in many application areas, such as multimedia, visualisation, virtual reality and the Internet. However, the hardware realisation of OpenGL architecture based on FPGA (field programmable gate array) is beyond the scope of most of computer graphics researches. It is an uncultivated research area where the OpenGL pipeline, from hardware through the whole embedded system (ES) up to applications, is implemented in an FPGA chip. This research proposes a hybrid approach to investigating both software and hardware methods. It aims at bridging the gap between methods of software and hardware, and enhancing the overall performance for computer graphics. It consists of four parts, the construction of an FPGA-based ES, Mesa-OpenGL implementation for FPGA-based ESs, parallel processing, and a novel algorithm for surface modelling and editing. The FPGA-based ES is built up. In addition to the Nios II soft processor and DDR SDRAM memory, it consists of the LCD display device, frame buffers, video pipeline, and algorithm-specified module to support the graphics processing. Since there is no implementation of OpenGL ES available for FPGA-based ESs, a specific OpenGL implementation based on Mesa is carried out. Because of the limited FPGA resources, the implementation adopts the fixed-point arithmetic, which can offer faster computing and lower storage than the floating point arithmetic, and the accuracy satisfying the needs of 3D rendering. Moreover, the implementation includes Bézier-spline curve and surface algorithms to support surface modelling and editing. The pipelined parallelism and co-processors are used to accelerate graphics processing in this research. These two parallelism methods extend the traditional computation parallelism in fine-grained parallel tasks in the FPGA-base ESs. The novel algorithm for surface modelling and editing, called Progressive and Mixing Algorithm (PAMA), is proposed and implemented on FPGA-based ES’s. Compared with two main surface editing methods, subdivision and deformation, the PAMA can eliminate the large storage requirement and computing cost of intermediated processes. With four independent shape parameters, the PAMA can be used to model and edit freely the shape of an open or closed surface that keeps globally the zero-order geometric continuity. The PAMA can be applied independently not only FPGA-based ESs but also other platforms. With the parallel processing, small size, and low costs of computing, storage and power, the FPGA-based ES provides an effective hybrid solution to surface modelling and editing

    AutoGraff: towards a computational understanding of graffiti writing and related art forms.

    The aim of this thesis is to develop a system that generates letters and pictures with a style that is immediately recognizable as graffiti art or calligraphy. The proposed system can be used similarly to, and in tight integration with, conventional computer-aided geometric design tools and can be used to generate synthetic graffiti content for urban environments in games and in movies, and to guide robotic or fabrication systems that can materialise the output of the system with physical drawing media. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part describes a set of stroke primitives, building blocks that can be combined to generate different designs that resemble graffiti or calligraphy. These primitives mimic the process typically used to design graffiti letters and exploit well known principles of motor control to model the way in which an artist moves when incrementally tracing stylised letter forms. The second part demonstrates how these stroke primitives can be automatically recovered from input geometry defined in vector form, such as the digitised traces of writing made by a user, or the glyph outlines in a font. This procedure converts the input geometry into a seed that can be transformed into a variety of calligraphic and graffiti stylisations, which depend on parametric variations of the strokes

    Characterisation of a multispectral digital camera System for quantitatively comparing complex animal Patterns in natural environments.

    Animal coloration can be described by complex colour patterns including elements of varying size, shape and spectral profile which commonly reflect energy outside the spectral range visible for humans. Whilst spectrometry is currently employed for the quantitative study of animal coloration, it is limited on its ability to describe the spatial characteristics of spectral differences in patterns. Digital photography has recently been used as a tool for measuring spatial and spectral properties of patterns based on quantitative analysis of linear camera responses recovered after characterising the device. However current applications of digital imaging for studying animal coloration are limited to image recording within a laboratory environment considering controlled lighting conditions. Here a refined methodology for camera characterisation is developed permitting the recording of images under different illumination conditions typical of natural environments. The characterised camera system thus allows recording images from reflected ultraviolet and visible radiation resulting in a multispectral digital camera system. Furthermore a standardised imaging processing workflow was developed based on specific characteristics of the camera thus making possible an objective comparison from images. An application of the characterised camera system is exemplified in the study of animal colour patterns adapted for camouflage using as a model two Australian, endemic lizard species. The interaction between the spectral and spatial properties of the respective lizards produces complex patterns than cannot be interpreted by spectrophotometry alone. Data obtained from analysis of images recorded with the characterised camera system in the visible and near-ultraviolet region of the spectrum reveal significative differences between sex and species and a possible interaction between sex and species, suggesting microhabitat specialisation to different backgrounds

    A framework for hull form reverse engineering and geometry integration into numerical simulations

    The thesis presents a ship hull form specific reverse engineering and CAD integration framework. The reverse engineering part proposes three alternative suitable reconstruction approaches namely curves network, direct surface fitting, and triangulated surface reconstruction. The CAD integration part includes surface healing, region identification, and domain preparation strategies which used to adapt the CAD model to downstream application requirements. In general, the developed framework bridges a point cloud and a CAD model obtained from IGES and STL file into downstream applications

    Actuators for Intelligent Electric Vehicles

    This book details the advanced actuators for IEVs and the control algorithm design. In the actuator design, the configuration four-wheel independent drive/steering electric vehicles is reviewed. An in-wheel two-speed AMT with selectable one-way clutch is designed for IEV. Considering uncertainties, the optimization design for the planetary gear train of IEV is conducted. An electric power steering system is designed for IEV. In addition, advanced control algorithms are proposed in favour of active safety improvement. A supervision mechanism is applied to the segment drift control of autonomous driving. Double super-resolution network is used to design the intelligent driving algorithm. Torque distribution control technology and four-wheel steering technology are utilized for path tracking and adaptive cruise control. To advance the control accuracy, advanced estimation algorithms are studied in this book. The tyre-road peak friction coefficient under full slip rate range is identified based on the normalized tyre model. The pressure of the electro-hydraulic brake system is estimated based on signal fusion. Besides, a multi-semantic driver behaviour recognition model of autonomous vehicles is designed using confidence fusion mechanism. Moreover, a mono-vision based lateral localization system of low-cost autonomous vehicles is proposed with deep learning curb detection. To sum up, the discussed advanced actuators, control and estimation algorithms are beneficial to the active safety improvement of IEVs

    Modern engineering design processes are driven by the extensive use of numerical simulations; naval architecture and ocean engineering are no exception. Computational power has been improved over the last few decades; therefore, the integration of different tools such as CAD, FEM, CFD, and CAM has enabled complex modeling and manufacturing problems to be solved in a more feasible way.
