Performance and Detection of M-ary Frequency Shift Keying in Triple Layer Wireless Sensor Network
This paper proposes an innovative triple layer Wireless Sensor Network (WSN)
system, which monitors M-ary events like temperature, pressure, humidity, etc.
with the help of geographically distributed sensors. The sensors convey signals
to the fusion centre using M-ary Frequency Shift Keying (MFSK)modulation scheme
over independent Rayleigh fading channels. At the fusion centre, detection
takes place with the help of Selection Combining (SC) diversity scheme, which
assures a simple and economical receiver circuitry. With the aid of various
simulations, the performance and efficacy of the system has been analyzed by
varying modulation levels, number of local sensors and probability of correct
detection by the sensors. The study endeavors to prove that triple layer WSN
system is an economical and dependable system capable of correct detection of
M-ary events by integrating frequency diversity together with antenna
diversity.Comment: 13 pages; International Journal of Computer Networks & Communications

Digital communications over fading channels
In this report, the probabilities of bit error for the most commonly used digital modulation techniques are analyzed. Analytic solutions are developed for the probability of bit error when the signal is affected by the most commonly encountered impairment to system performance for a wireless channel, the transmission of the signal over a fading channel. In this report, the effect of a slow, flat Ricean fading channel on communications systems performance is examined. Since channel fading significantly degrades the performance of a communication system, the performance of digital communication systems that also use forward error correction channel coding is analyzed for hard decision decoding and, where appropriate, for soft decision decoding. Diversity, another technique to mitigate the effect of fading channels on digital communication systems performance, is also discussed. Also included is a discussion of the effect of narrowband noise interference, both continuous and pulsed, on digital communication systems. We then discuss the analysis of the probability of bit error for the combination of error correction coding and diversity. Following this, we briefly discuss spread spectrum systems. Next, we examine the link budget analysis and various models for channel loss. Finally, we examine in detail the second generation digital wireless standard Global System for Mobile (GSM).Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
Performance Analysis for Multichannel Reception of OOFSK Signaling
In this paper, the error performance of on-off frequency shift keying (OOFSK)
modulation over fading channels is analyzed when the receiver is equipped with
multiple antennas. The analysis is conducted in two cases: the coherent
scenario where the fading is perfectly known at the receiver, and the
noncoherent scenario where neither the receiver nor the transmitter knows the
fading coefficients. For both cases, the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP)
detection rule is derived and analytical probability of error expressions are
obtained. The effect of fading correlation among the receiver antennas is also
studied. Simulation results indicate that for sufficiently low duty cycle
values, lower probability of error values with respect to FSK signaling are
achieved. Equivalently, when compared to FSK modulation, OOFSK with low duty
cycle requires less energy to achieve the same probability of error, which
renders this modulation a more energy efficient transmission technique.Comment: Proc. of the 2007 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking

Quantum information processing approaches in classical systems
The engineering problem of building scalable quantum computers has prompted the development of a rich theory modeling the evolution of quantum systems as well as techniques to preserve quantum information in the presence of noise. Such techniques offer systems-level approaches to the problem of robustly encoding and preserving information and, as a result, see applicability in a wide variety of architectures for computing systems. In this thesis, we visit the mathematical underpinnings of quantum information and apply strategies inspired by quantum information processing to two non-quantum systems to demonstrate advantage. We first describe the construction of a quantum emulation device, an analog electronic system with the same mathematical structure as a gate-based quantum computer, and introduce novel time-domain information encoding methods to increase the computational capacity of the device. We confirm the sustained performance of the improved system by successfully transforming emulated states by randomly selected quantum gates. We then visit similarities between quantum information processing and signal processing in the noncoherent wireless communication setting, the latter being an environment characterized by a lack of instantaneous channel knowledge. We describe the theoretical underpinnings of the noncoherent communication environment from both an information theoretic and signal processing perspective. This leads us to propose a multi-antenna space-time code construction based on a family of quantum error correcting codes known as stabilizer codes. For this code, we derive the optimal decoder in Rayleigh and Ricean fading and benchmark the its performance against coherent and differential coding at comparable rates.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Power Optimisation and Relay Selection in Cooperative Wireless Communication Networks
Cooperative communications have emerged as a significant concept to improve reliability and throughput in wireless systems. In cooperative networks, the idea is to implement a scheme in wireless systems where the nodes can harmonize their resources thereby enhancing the network performance in different aspects such as latency, BER and throughput. As cooperation spans from the basic idea of transmit diversity achieved via MIMO techniques and the relay channel, it aims to reap somewhat multiple benefits of combating fading/burst errors, increasing throughput and reducing energy use. Another major benefit of cooperation in wireless networks is that since the concept only requires neighbouring nodes to act as virtual relay antennas, the concept evades the negative impacts of deployment costs of multiple physical antennas for network operators especially in areas where they are difficult to deploy. In cooperative communications energy efficiency and long network lifetimes are very important design issues, the focus in this work is on ad hoc and sensor network varieties where the nodes integrate sensing, processing and communication such that their cooperation capabilities are subject to power optimisation. As cooperation communications leads to trade-offs in Quality of Services and transmit power, the key design issue is power optimisation to dynamically combat channel fluctuations and achieve a net reduction of transmit power with the goal of saving battery life. Recent researches in cooperative communications focus on power optimisation achieved via power control at the PHY layer, and/or scheduling mechanism at the MAC layer. The approach for this work will be to review the power control strategy at the PHY layer, identify their associated trade-offs, and use this as a basis to propose a power control strategy that offers adaptability to channel conditions, the road to novelty in this work is a channel adaptable power control algorithm that jointly optimise power allocation, modulation strategy and relay selection.
Thus, a novel relay selection method is developed and implemented to improve the performance of cooperative wireless networks in terms of energy consumption. The relay selection method revolves on selection the node with minimum distance to the source and destination. The design is valid to any wireless network setting especially Ad-hoc and sensor networks where space limitations preclude the implementation of bigger capacity battery. The thesis first investigates the design of relay selection schemes in cooperative networks and the associated protocols. Besides, modulation strategy and error correction code impact on energy consumption are investigated and the optimal solution is proposed and jointly implemented with the relay selection method. The proposed algorithm is extended to cooperative networks in which multiple nodes participate in cooperation in fixed and variable rate system. Thus, multi relay selection algorithm is proposed to improve virtual MIMO performance in terms of energy consumption. Furthermore, motivated by the trend of cell size optimisation in wireless networks, the proposed relay selection method is extended to clustered wireless networks, and jointly implemented with virtual clustering technique.
The work will encompass three main stages: First, the cooperative system is designed and two major protocols Decode and Forward (DF) and amplify and forward (AF) are investigated. Second, the proposed algorithm is modelled and tested under different channel conditions with emphasis on its performance using different modulation strategies for different cooperative wireless networks. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm is illustrated and verified via computer simulations. Simulation results show that the distance based relay selection algorithm exhibits an improved performance in terms of energy consumption compared to the conventional cooperative schemes under different cooperative communication scenarios
