Pressure jump interface law for the Stokes-Darcy coupling: Confirmation by direct numerical simulations

It is generally accepted that the effective velocity of a viscous flow over a porous bed satisfies the Beavers-Joseph slip law. To the contrary, interface law for the effective stress has been a subject of controversy. Recently, a pressure jump interface law has been rigorously derived by Marciniak-Czochra and Mikeli\'c. In this paper, we provide a confirmation of the analytical result using direct numerical simulation of the flow at the microscopic level.Comment: 25 pages, preprin

A study on iterative methods for solving Richards` equation

This work concerns linearization methods for efficiently solving the Richards` equation,a degenerate elliptic-parabolic equation which models flow in saturated/unsaturated porous media. The discretization of Richards` equation is based on backward Euler in time and Galerkin finite el-ements in space. The most valuable linearization schemes for Richards` equation, i.e. the Newtonmethod, the Picard method, the Picard/Newton method and theLscheme are presented and theirperformance is comparatively studied. The convergence, the computational time and the conditionnumbers for the underlying linear systems are recorded. The convergence of theLscheme is theo-retically proved and the convergence of the other methods is discussed. A new scheme is proposed,theLscheme/Newton method which is more robust and quadratically convergent. The linearizationmethods are tested on illustrative numerical examples

Improving Newton's method performance by parametrization: the case of Richards equation

The nonlinear systems obtained by discretizing degenerate parabolic equations may be hard to solve, especially with Newton's method. In this paper, we apply to Richards equation a strategy that consists in defining a new primary unknown for the continuous equation in order to stabilize Newton's method by parametrizing the graph linking the pressure and the saturation. The resulting form of Richards equation is then discretized thanks to a monotone Finite Volume scheme. We prove the well-posedness of the numerical scheme. Then we show under appropriate non-degeneracy conditions on the parametrization that Newton\^as method converges locally and quadratically. Finally, we provide numerical evidences of the efficiency of our approach
