    This thesis covers the investigation and application of continuous spatial models for multiple antenna signal processing. The use of antenna arrays for advanced sensing and communications systems has been facilitated by the rapid increase in the capabilities of digital signal processing systems. The wireless communications channel will vary across space as different signal paths from the same source combine and interfere. This creates a level of spatial diversity that can be exploited to improve the robustness and overall capacity of the wireless channel. Conventional approaches to using spatial diversity have centered on smart, adaptive antennas and spatial beam forming. Recently, the more general theory of multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) systems has been developed to utilise the independent spatial communication modes offered in a scattering environment. ¶ ..

    Machine Learning Techniques To Mitigate Nonlinear Impairments In Optical Fiber System

    The upcoming deployment of 5/6G networks, online services like 4k/8k HDTV (streamers and online games), the development of the Internet of Things concept, connecting billions of active devices, as well as the high-speed optical access networks, impose progressively higher and higher requirements on the underlying optical networks infrastructure. With current network infrastructures approaching almost unsustainable levels of bandwidth utilization/ data traffic rates, and the electrical power consumption of communications systems becoming a serious concern in view of our achieving the global carbon footprint targets, network operators and system suppliers are now looking for ways to respond to these demands while also maximizing the returns of their investments. The search for a solution to this predicted ÂȘcapacity crunchÂș led to a renewed interest in alternative approaches to system design, including the usage of high-order modulation formats and high symbol rates, enabled by coherent detection, development of wideband transmission tools, new fiber types (such as multi-mode and ±core), and finally, the implementation of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) elements to mitigate optical channel nonlinearities and improve the received SNR. All aforementioned options are intended to boost the available optical systems’ capacity to fulfill the new traffic demands. This thesis focuses on the last of these possible solutions to the ÂȘcapacity crunch," answering the question: ÂȘHow can machine learning improve existing optical communications by minimizing quality penalties introduced by transceiver components and fiber media nonlinearity?". Ultimately, by identifying a proper machine learning solution (or a bevy of solutions) to act as a nonlinear channel equalizer for optical transmissions, we can improve the system’s throughput and even reduce the signal processing complexity, which means we can transmit more using the already built optical infrastructure. This problem was broken into four parts in this thesis: i) the development of new machine learning architectures to achieve appealing levels of performance; ii) the correct assessment of computational complexity and hardware realization; iii) the application of AI techniques to achieve fast reconfigurable solutions; iv) the creation of a theoretical foundation with studies demonstrating the caveats and pitfalls of machine learning methods used for optical channel equalization. Common measures such as bit error rate, quality factor, and mutual information are considered in scrutinizing the systems studied in this thesis. Based on simulation and experimental results, we conclude that neural network-based equalization can, in fact, improve the channel quality of transmission and at the same time have computational complexity close to other classic DSP algorithms

    Essays on Migration and Intergenerational Mobility

    My dissertation addresses questions in two topic areas, intergenerational mobility and migration. I first study the dynamic response of income mobility to structural changes in a model of intergenerational transmission. I illustrate that mobility today depends on past policies and institutions, such that a decline in mobility may reflect past gains rather than a recent deterioration of “equality of opportunity”. How to measure income mobility is addressed in the next chapter, in which I document that heterogeneity in the shape of income profiles generates large life-cycle biases, which cannot be eliminated with standard methods used in the current literature. Finally, in the fourth chapter I study how elements of the transmission process affect the relation between mobility over two generations and the long-run persistence of economic status within families. I provide various arguments why long-run mobility is likely lower than predictions from intergenerational evidence suggest. In the final chapter I analyse the effect of migration on labor markets. Triggered by the fall of the iron curtain, Germany experienced a sudden inflow of Czech workers that reached a local employment share of up to ten percent. I exploit this natural experiment to assess how immigration affects native workers, and to examine the mechanisms by which labor markets adjust. I find a strong and rapid response in both native wages and employment, and document substantial heterogeneity across age groups: native employment decreases most strongly among older workers, even though their wages are less affected than for other age groups. This finding suggests that the elasticity of labor supply differs across demographic groups, with important implications for the analysis of responses to labor supply shocks. When distinguishing between the different types of adjustment, I find that native employment decreases predominantly through diminished inflows into work, less so through outflows into non-employment
