    Basic research on design analysis methods for rotorcraft vibrations

    The objective of the present work was to develop a method for identifying physically plausible finite element system models of airframe structures from test data. The assumed models were based on linear elastic behavior with general (nonproportional) damping. Physical plausibility of the identified system matrices was insured by restricting the identification process to designated physical parameters only and not simply to the elements of the system matrices themselves. For example, in a large finite element model the identified parameters might be restricted to the moduli for each of the different materials used in the structure. In the case of damping, a restricted set of damping values might be assigned to finite elements based on the material type and on the fabrication processes used. In this case, different damping values might be associated with riveted, bolted and bonded elements. The method itself is developed first, and several approaches are outlined for computing the identified parameter values. The method is applied first to a simple structure for which the 'measured' response is actually synthesized from an assumed model. Both stiffness and damping parameter values are accurately identified. The true test, however, is the application to a full-scale airframe structure. In this case, a NASTRAN model and actual measured modal parameters formed the basis for the identification of a restricted set of physically plausible stiffness and damping parameters

    Grammar-based Representation and Identification of Dynamical Systems

    In this paper we propose a novel approach to identify dynamical systems. The method estimates the model structure and the parameters of the model simultaneously, automating the critical decisions involved in identification such as model structure and complexity selection. In order to solve the combined model structure and model parameter estimation problem, a new representation of dynamical systems is proposed. The proposed representation is based on Tree Adjoining Grammar, a formalism that was developed from linguistic considerations. Using the proposed representation, the identification problem can be interpreted as a multi-objective optimization problem and we propose a Evolutionary Algorithm-based approach to solve the problem. A benchmark example is used to demonstrate the proposed approach. The results were found to be comparable to that obtained by state-of-the-art non-linear system identification methods, without making use of knowledge of the system description.Comment: Submitted to European Control Conference (ECC) 201

    Improved model identification for nonlinear systems using a random subsampling and multifold modelling (RSMM) approach

    In nonlinear system identification, the available observed data are conventionally partitioned into two parts: the training data that are used for model identification and the test data that are used for model performance testing. This sort of ‘hold-out’ or ‘split-sample’ data partitioning method is convenient and the associated model identification procedure is in general easy to implement. The resultant model obtained from such a once-partitioned single training dataset, however, may occasionally lack robustness and generalisation to represent future unseen data, because the performance of the identified model may be highly dependent on how the data partition is made. To overcome the drawback of the hold-out data partitioning method, this study presents a new random subsampling and multifold modelling (RSMM) approach to produce less biased or preferably unbiased models. The basic idea and the associated procedure are as follows. Firstly, generate K training datasets (and also K validation datasets), using a K-fold random subsampling method. Secondly, detect significant model terms and identify a common model structure that fits all the K datasets using a new proposed common model selection approach, called the multiple orthogonal search algorithm. Finally, estimate and refine the model parameters for the identified common-structured model using a multifold parameter estimation method. The proposed method can produce robust models with better generalisation performance

    Parameter estimation of ODE's via nonparametric estimators

    Ordinary differential equations (ODE's) are widespread models in physics, chemistry and biology. In particular, this mathematical formalism is used for describing the evolution of complex systems and it might consist of high-dimensional sets of coupled nonlinear differential equations. In this setting, we propose a general method for estimating the parameters indexing ODE's from times series. Our method is able to alleviate the computational difficulties encountered by the classical parametric methods. These difficulties are due to the implicit definition of the model. We propose the use of a nonparametric estimator of regression functions as a first-step in the construction of an M-estimator, and we show the consistency of the derived estimator under general conditions. In the case of spline estimators, we prove asymptotic normality, and that the rate of convergence is the usual n\sqrt{n}-rate for parametric estimators.     Model estimation of cerebral hemodynamics between blood flow and volume changes: a data-based modeling approach

    It is well known that there is a dynamic relationship between cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume (CBV). With increasing applications of functional MRI, where the blood oxygen-level-dependent signals are recorded, the understanding and accurate modeling of the hemodynamic relationship between CBF and CBV becomes increasingly important. This study presents an empirical and data-based modeling framework for model identification from CBF and CBV experimental data. It is shown that the relationship between the changes in CBF and CBV can be described using a parsimonious autoregressive with exogenous input model structure. It is observed that neither the ordinary least-squares (LS) method nor the classical total least-squares (TLS) method can produce accurate estimates from the original noisy CBF and CBV data. A regularized total least-squares (RTLS) method is thus introduced and extended to solve such an error-in-the-variables problem. Quantitative results show that the RTLS method works very well on the noisy CBF and CBV data. Finally, a combination of RTLS with a filtering method can lead to a parsimonious but very effective model that can characterize the relationship between the changes in CBF and CBV

    A Control Systems Perspective to Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis

    Modern industrial processors, engineering systems and structures, have grown significantly in complexity and in scale during the recent years. Therefore, there is an increase in the demand for automatic processors, to avoid faults and severe break downs, through predictive maintenance. In this context, the research into nonlinear systems analysis has attained much interest in recent years as linear models cannot be used to represent some of these systems. In the field of control systems, the analysis of such systems is conducted in the frequency domain using methods of Frequency Response Analysis. Generalised Frequency Response Functions (GFRFs) and the Nonlinear Output Frequency Response Functions (NOFRFs) are Frequency Response Analysis techniques used for the analysis of nonlinear dynamical behaviour in the frequency domain. The problem of Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis has been investigated in the perspective of modelling, signal processing and multivariate statistical analysis, data-driven methods such as neural networks have gained significant popularity. This is because possible faulty conditions related to complex systems are often difficult to interpret. In such a background, recently, a new data-driven approach based on a systems perspective has been proposed. This approach uses a controls systems analysis method of System Identification and Frequency Response Analysis and has been shown before as a potential technique. However, this approach has certain practical concerns regarding real-world applications. Motivated by these concerns in this thesis, the following contributions are put forward: 1. The method of evaluating NOFRFs, using input-output data of a nonlinear system may experience numerical errors. This is a major concern, hence the development of a method to overcome these numerical issues effectively. 2. Frequency Response Analysis cannot be used in its current state for nonlinear systems that exhibit severe nonlinear behaviour. Although theoretically, it has been argued that this is possible, even though, it has been impossible in a practical point of view. Therefore, the possibility and the manner in which Frequency Response Analysis can be conducted for these types of systems is presented. 3. Development of a System Identification methodology to overcome the issues of inadequately exciting inputs and appropriately capturing system dynamics under general circumstances of Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis. In addition to the above, the novel implementation of a control systems analysis approach is implemented in characterising corrosion, crack depth and crack length on metal samples. The approach is applied to the data collected, using a newly proposed non-invasive Structural Health Monitoring method called RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) wireless eddy current probing. The control systems analysis approach along with the RFID wireless eddy current probing method shows the clear potential of being a new technology in non-invasive Structural Health Monitoring systems
