    Learning Task Constraints from Demonstration for Hybrid Force/Position Control

    We present a novel method for learning hybrid force/position control from demonstration. We learn a dynamic constraint frame aligned to the direction of desired force using Cartesian Dynamic Movement Primitives. In contrast to approaches that utilize a fixed constraint frame, our approach easily accommodates tasks with rapidly changing task constraints over time. We activate only one degree of freedom for force control at any given time, ensuring motion is always possible orthogonal to the direction of desired force. Since we utilize demonstrated forces to learn the constraint frame, we are able to compensate for forces not detected by methods that learn only from the demonstrated kinematic motion, such as frictional forces between the end-effector and the contact surface. We additionally propose novel extensions to the Dynamic Movement Primitive (DMP) framework that encourage robust transition from free-space motion to in-contact motion in spite of environment uncertainty. We incorporate force feedback and a dynamically shifting goal to reduce forces applied to the environment and retain stable contact while enabling force control.     Efficiently Combining Human Demonstrations and Interventions for Safe Training of Autonomous Systems in Real-Time

    This paper investigates how to utilize different forms of human interaction to safely train autonomous systems in real-time by learning from both human demonstrations and interventions. We implement two components of the Cycle-of-Learning for Autonomous Systems, which is our framework for combining multiple modalities of human interaction. The current effort employs human demonstrations to teach a desired behavior via imitation learning, then leverages intervention data to correct for undesired behaviors produced by the imitation learner to teach novel tasks to an autonomous agent safely, after only minutes of training. We demonstrate this method in an autonomous perching task using a quadrotor with continuous roll, pitch, yaw, and throttle commands and imagery captured from a downward-facing camera in a high-fidelity simulated environment. Our method improves task completion performance for the same amount of human interaction when compared to learning from demonstrations alone, while also requiring on average 32% less data to achieve that performance. This provides evidence that combining multiple modes of human interaction can increase both the training speed and overall performance of policies for autonomous systems.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Learning Feedback Terms for Reactive Planning and Control

    With the advancement of robotics, machine learning, and machine perception, increasingly more robots will enter human environments to assist with daily tasks. However, dynamically-changing human environments requires reactive motion plans. Reactivity can be accomplished through replanning, e.g. model-predictive control, or through a reactive feedback policy that modifies on-going behavior in response to sensory events. In this paper, we investigate how to use machine learning to add reactivity to a previously learned nominal skilled behavior. We approach this by learning a reactive modification term for movement plans represented by nonlinear differential equations. In particular, we use dynamic movement primitives (DMPs) to represent a skill and a neural network to learn a reactive policy from human demonstrations. We use the well explored domain of obstacle avoidance for robot manipulation as a test bed. Our approach demonstrates how a neural network can be combined with physical insights to ensure robust behavior across different obstacle settings and movement durations.     Knowledge-based intelligent error feedback in a Spanish ICALL system

    This paper describes the Spanish ICALL system ESPADA which helps language learners to improve their syntactical knowledge. The most important parts of ESPADA for the learner are a Demonstration Module and an Analysis Module. The Demonstration Module provides animated presentation of selected grammatical information. The Analysis Module is able to parse ill-formed sentences and to give adequate feedback on 28 different error types from different levels of language use (syntax, semantics, agreement). It contains a robust chart-based island parser which uses a combination of mal-rules and constraint relaxation to ensure that learner input can be analysed and appropriate error feedback can be generated

    Robot eye-hand coordination learning by watching human demonstrations: a task function approximation approach

    We present a robot eye-hand coordination learning method that can directly learn visual task specification by watching human demonstrations. Task specification is represented as a task function, which is learned using inverse reinforcement learning(IRL) by inferring differential rewards between state changes. The learned task function is then used as continuous feedbacks in an uncalibrated visual servoing(UVS) controller designed for the execution phase. Our proposed method can directly learn from raw videos, which removes the need for hand-engineered task specification. It can also provide task interpretability by directly approximating the task function. Besides, benefiting from the use of a traditional UVS controller, our training process is efficient and the learned policy is independent from a particular robot platform. Various experiments were designed to show that, for a certain DOF task, our method can adapt to task/environment variances in target positions, backgrounds, illuminations, and occlusions without prior retraining.Comment: Accepted in ICRA 201
