A family of total Lagrangian Petrov-Galerkin Cosserat rod finite element formulations
The standard in rod finite element formulations is the Bubnov-Galerkin
projection method, where the test functions arise from a consistent variation
of the ansatz functions. This approach becomes increasingly complex when highly
nonlinear ansatz functions are chosen to approximate the rod's centerline and
cross-section orientations. Using a Petrov-Galerkin projection method, we
propose a whole family of rod finite element formulations where the nodal
generalized virtual displacements and generalized velocities are interpolated
instead of using the consistent variations and time derivatives of the ansatz
functions. This approach leads to a significant simplification of the
expressions in the discrete virtual work functionals. In addition, independent
strategies can be chosen for interpolating the nodal centerline points and
cross-section orientations. We discuss three objective interpolation strategies
and give an in-depth analysis concerning locking and convergence behavior for
the whole family of rod finite element formulations.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2301.0559
Countermeasures for the majority attack in blockchain distributed systems
Discovering the hidden structure of financial markets through bayesian modelling
Understanding what is driving the price of a financial asset is a question that is currently mostly unanswered. In this work we go beyond the classic one step ahead prediction and instead construct models that create new information on the behaviour of these time series. Our aim is to get a better understanding of the hidden structures that drive the moves of each financial time series and thus the market as a whole.
We propose a tool to decompose multiple time series into economically-meaningful variables to explain the endogenous and exogenous factors driving their underlying variability. The methodology we introduce goes beyond the direct model forecast. Indeed, since our model continuously adapts its variables and coefficients, we can study the time series of coefficients and selected variables. We also present a model to construct the causal graph of relations between these time series and include them in the exogenous factors.
Hence, we obtain a model able to explain what is driving the move of both each specific time series and the market as a whole. In addition, the obtained graph of the time series provides new information on the underlying risk structure of this environment. With this deeper understanding of the hidden structure we propose novel ways to detect and forecast risks in the market. We investigate our results with inferences up to one month into the future using stocks, FX futures and ETF futures, demonstrating its superior performance according to accuracy of large moves, longer-term prediction and consistency over time. We also go in more details on the economic interpretation of the new variables and discuss the created graph structure of the market.Open Acces
Predictive Maintenance of Critical Equipment for Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Liquefaction Process
Predictive Maintenance of Critical Equipment for Liquefied Natural Gas Liquefaction Process
Meeting global energy demand is a massive challenge, especially with the quest of more affinity towards sustainable and cleaner energy. Natural gas is viewed as a bridge fuel to a renewable energy. LNG as a processed form of natural gas is the fastest growing and cleanest form of fossil fuel. Recently, the unprecedented increased in LNG demand, pushes its exploration and processing into offshore as Floating LNG (FLNG). The offshore topsides gas processes and liquefaction has been identified as one of the great challenges of FLNG. Maintaining topside liquefaction process asset such as gas turbine is critical to profitability and reliability, availability of the process facilities. With the setbacks of widely used reactive and preventive time-based maintenances approaches, to meet the optimal reliability and availability requirements of oil and gas operators, this thesis presents a framework driven by AI-based learning approaches for predictive maintenance. The framework is aimed at leveraging the value of condition-based maintenance to minimises the failures and downtimes of critical FLNG equipment (Aeroderivative gas turbine).
In this study, gas turbine thermodynamics were introduced, as well as some factors affecting gas turbine modelling. Some important considerations whilst modelling gas turbine system such as modelling objectives, modelling methods, as well as approaches in modelling gas turbines were investigated. These give basis and mathematical background to develop a gas turbine simulated model. The behaviour of simple cycle HDGT was simulated using thermodynamic laws and operational data based on Rowen model. Simulink model is created using experimental data based on Rowen’s model, which is aimed at exploring transient behaviour of an industrial gas turbine. The results show the capability of Simulink model in capture nonlinear dynamics of the gas turbine system, although constraint to be applied for further condition monitoring studies, due to lack of some suitable relevant correlated features required by the model.
AI-based models were found to perform well in predicting gas turbines failures. These capabilities were investigated by this thesis and validated using an experimental data obtained from gas turbine engine facility. The dynamic behaviours gas turbines changes when exposed to different varieties of fuel. A diagnostics-based AI models were developed to diagnose different gas turbine engine’s failures associated with exposure to various types of fuels. The capabilities of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique have been harnessed to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset and extract good features for the diagnostics model development.
Signal processing-based (time-domain, frequency domain, time-frequency domain) techniques have also been used as feature extraction tools, and significantly added more correlations to the dataset and influences the prediction results obtained. Signal processing played a vital role in extracting good features for the diagnostic models when compared PCA. The overall results obtained from both PCA, and signal processing-based models demonstrated the capabilities of neural network-based models in predicting gas turbine’s failures. Further, deep learning-based LSTM model have been developed, which extract features from the time series dataset directly, and hence does not require any feature extraction tool. The LSTM model achieved the highest performance and prediction accuracy, compared to both PCA-based and signal processing-based the models.
In summary, it is concluded from this thesis that despite some challenges related to gas turbines Simulink Model for not being integrated fully for gas turbine condition monitoring studies, yet data-driven models have proven strong potentials and excellent performances on gas turbine’s CBM diagnostics. The models developed in this thesis can be used for design and manufacturing purposes on gas turbines applied to FLNG, especially on condition monitoring and fault detection of gas turbines. The result obtained would provide valuable understanding and helpful guidance for researchers and practitioners to implement robust predictive maintenance models that will enhance the reliability and availability of FLNG critical equipment.Petroleum Technology Development Funds (PTDF) Nigeri
A suite of quantum algorithms for the shortestvector problem
Crytography has come to be an essential part of the cybersecurity infrastructure that provides a safe environment for communications in an increasingly connected world. The advent of quantum computing poses a threat to the foundations of the current widely-used cryptographic model, due to the breaking of most of the cryptographic algorithms used to provide confidentiality, authenticity, and more. Consequently a new set of cryptographic protocols have been designed to be secure against quantum computers, and are collectively known as post-quantum cryptography (PQC). A forerunner among PQC is lattice-based cryptography, whose security relies upon the hardness of a number of closely related mathematical problems, one of which is known as the shortest vector problem (SVP).
In this thesis I describe a suite of quantum algorithms that utilize the energy minimization principle to attack the shortest vector problem. The algorithms outlined span the gate-model and continuous time quantum computing, and explore methods of parameter optimization via variational methods, which are thought to be effective on near-term quantum computers. The performance of the algorithms are analyzed numerically, analytically, and on quantum hardware where possible. I explain how the results obtained in the pursuit of solving SVP apply more broadly to quantum algorithms seeking to solve general real-world problems; minimize the effect of noise on imperfect hardware; and improve efficiency of parameter optimization.Open Acces
Full stack development toward a trapped ion logical qubit
Quantum error correction is a key step toward the construction of a large-scale quantum computer, by preventing small infidelities in quantum gates from accumulating over the course of an algorithm. Detecting and correcting errors is achieved by using multiple physical qubits to form a smaller number of robust logical
qubits. The physical implementation of a logical qubit requires multiple qubits, on which high fidelity gates
can be performed.
The project aims to realize a logical qubit based on ions confined on a microfabricated surface trap. Each
physical qubit will be a microwave dressed state qubit based on 171Yb+ ions. Gates are intended to be realized through RF and microwave radiation in combination with magnetic field gradients. The project vertically integrates software down to hardware compilation layers in order to deliver, in the near future, a fully functional small device demonstrator.
This thesis presents novel results on multiple layers of a full stack quantum computer model. On the hardware level a robust quantum gate is studied and ion displacement over the X-junction geometry is demonstrated.
The experimental organization is optimized through automation and compressed waveform data transmission. A new quantum assembly language purely dedicated to trapped ion quantum computers is introduced. The demonstrator is aimed at testing implementation of quantum error correction codes while preparing for larger
scale iterations.Open Acces
Unraveling the effect of sex on human genetic architecture
Sex is arguably the most important differentiating characteristic in most mammalian
species, separating populations into different groups, with varying behaviors, morphologies,
and physiologies based on their complement of sex chromosomes, amongst other factors. In
humans, despite males and females sharing nearly identical genomes, there are differences
between the sexes in complex traits and in the risk of a wide array of diseases. Sex provides
the genome with a distinct hormonal milieu, differential gene expression, and environmental
pressures arising from gender societal roles. This thus poses the possibility of observing
gene by sex (GxS) interactions between the sexes that may contribute to some of the
phenotypic differences observed. In recent years, there has been growing evidence of GxS,
with common genetic variation presenting different effects on males and females. These
studies have however been limited in regards to the number of traits studied and/or
statistical power. Understanding sex differences in genetic architecture is of great
importance as this could lead to improved understanding of potential differences in
underlying biological pathways and disease etiology between the sexes and in turn help
inform personalised treatments and precision medicine.
In this thesis we provide insights into both the scope and mechanism of GxS across the
genome of circa 450,000 individuals of European ancestry and 530 complex traits in the UK
Biobank. We found small yet widespread differences in genetic architecture across traits
through the calculation of sex-specific heritability, genetic correlations, and sex-stratified
genome-wide association studies (GWAS). We further investigated whether sex-agnostic
(non-stratified) efforts could potentially be missing information of interest, including sex-specific trait-relevant loci and increased phenotype prediction accuracies. Finally, we
studied the potential functional role of sex differences in genetic architecture through sex
biased expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) and gene-level analyses.
Overall, this study marks a broad examination of the genetics of sex differences. Our findings
parallel previous reports, suggesting the presence of sexual genetic heterogeneity across
complex traits of generally modest magnitude. Furthermore, our results suggest the need to
consider sex-stratified analyses in future studies in order to shed light into possible sex-specific molecular mechanisms
Industrial Robotics for Advanced Machining
This work presents a literature review of the current state of robotic machining with industrial machining robots, primarily those with 6-axis end effectors and serial link (anthropomorphic) construction. Various disadvantages of robotic machining in industry are presented, as well as the methods applied to mitigate them and discussions of their effects. From this review, the methods of dynamic modelling, stability prediction and configuration control are selected for application to the task of optimisation of a robotic machining cell for drilling operations. Matrix Structural Analysis (MSA) and methods developed by Klimchik et al. are used for compliance modelling, stability prediction methods developed by Altintas et al. and machining stability lobe prediction are then applied to a robotic drilling process, as explored by Mousavi et al. This optimisation method is applied using the measured and estimated properties of an ABB IRB 6640 robot and results are presented in comparison with previous experimentation with the physical robot, and analytical stability predictions from the same cutting parameters with Cutpro software. Results are discussed in the concluding chapters, as well as discontinued parts of the project and suggestions for future work
Towards a Low-SWaP 1024-beam Digital Array: A 32-beam Sub-system at 5.8 GHz
Millimeter wave communications require multibeam beamforming in order to
utilize wireless channels that suffer from obstructions, path loss, and
multi-path effects. Digital multibeam beamforming has maximum degrees of
freedom compared to analog phased arrays. However, circuit complexity and power
consumption are important constraints for digital multibeam systems. A
low-complexity digital computing architecture is proposed for a
multiplication-free 32-point linear transform that approximates multiple
simultaneous RF beams similar to a discrete Fourier transform (DFT). Arithmetic
complexity due to multiplication is reduced from the FFT complexity of
for DFT realizations, down to zero, thus yielding a
46% and 55% reduction in chip area and dynamic power consumption, respectively,
for the case considered. The paper describes the proposed 32-point DFT
approximation targeting a 1024-beams using a 2D array, and shows the
multiplierless approximation and its mapping to a 32-beam sub-system consisting
of 5.8 GHz antennas that can be used for generating 1024 digital beams without
multiplications. Real-time beam computation is achieved using a Xilinx FPGA at
120 MHz bandwidth per beam. Theoretical beam performance is compared with
measured RF patterns from both a fixed-point FFT as well as the proposed
multiplier-free algorithm and are in good agreement.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. This version corrects a typo in the

DeepTx: Deep Learning Beamforming with Channel Prediction
Machine learning algorithms have recently been considered for many tasks in
the field of wireless communications. Previously, we have proposed the use of a
deep fully convolutional neural network (CNN) for receiver processing and shown
it to provide considerable performance gains. In this study, we focus on
machine learning algorithms for the transmitter. In particular, we consider
beamforming and propose a CNN which, for a given uplink channel estimate as
input, outputs downlink channel information to be used for beamforming. The CNN
is trained in a supervised manner considering both uplink and downlink
transmissions with a loss function that is based on UE receiver performance.
The main task of the neural network is to predict the channel evolution between
uplink and downlink slots, but it can also learn to handle inefficiencies and
errors in the whole chain, including the actual beamforming phase. The provided
numerical experiments demonstrate the improved beamforming performance.Comment: 27 pages, this work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible
