Musik im Theater - Theatermusik

Diese Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über das umfangreiche Gebiet der Theatermusik mit ihren Komponisten im Wien des 19. Jahrhunderts. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt darauf, die Vielfalt an unterschiedlichen namhaften und auch weniger bekannten Komponisten, welche Schauspielmusik komponiert haben, darzustellen. An welchen Spielstätten in Wien werden die Schauspielmusiken der einzelnen Komponisten aufgeführt und welche Stückgattungen werden vorrangig vertont? Was ist Theatermusik und inwiefern unterscheidet sich jene Gattung von anderen Gattungen des Musiktheaters? Welche Funktion und Aufgaben kann Theatermusik im dramatischen Text übernehmen? Welche Aufgaben übernehmen die (Theater-)Kapellmeister als Komponisten im Theater und welche Position nehmen sie innerhalb der Theaterhierarchie ein? Die Hauptaussagen der Arbeit basieren dabei überwiegend auf zwei musikwissenschaftlichen Quellen. Zum einen handelt es sich dabei um Stiegers Opernlexikon, wobei hier primär der Komponistenkatalog und in weiterer Folge auch der Titelkatalog sowie das Librettistenverzeichnis Aufschlüsse über das Schaffen und Wirken der Theatermusikkomponisten lieferten. Zum anderen gaben diverse Zeitschriftenartikel der Österreichisch=Ungarische Musikerzeitung über das Leben der Kapellmeister preis

Unterhaltung mit Haltung

57 Jahre ist es her, dass Leon Epp und Mitarbeiter des Kulturreferates des Österreichischen Gewerkschaftsbundes die Idee hatten, VOLKSTheater zu den Menschen in der „Peripherie“ Wiens zu bringen. Seither besteht die Tradition des „Volkstheaters in den Außenbezirken“. 1999 war die „Aktion“ für viele beinahe abgeschrieben. Die Arbeiterkammer, die finanzielle Stütze des Projektes, zog ihre Subventionen zurück. 2000 sprang die Stadt Wien ein und unterstützt seither das „Volkstheater in den Bezirken“, das 2005 mit der Direktion Michael Schottenbergs und der Übernahme der Tourneeleitung durch Doris Wiener einen neuen Namen erhielt. Nicht nur der Name, auch das Programm hat einen „Relaunch“ durchlaufen. Neue Genres und die besten SchauspielerInnen des Haupthauses am Weghuberpark im 7. Bezirk beehren fünf Mal jährlich die Besucher der 20 Spielstätten in mittlerweile ganz Wien. Die Verbindung zwischen SchauspielerInnen und dem Publikum wurde aufgewertet und unter anderem durch das „Bezirke-Café“ begünstigt. Diese „Unterhaltung“ sowie Schottenbergs Aussage, er wolle am Volkstheater „Unterhaltung mit Haltung“ bieten, führten zu dem Titel dieser Diplomarbeit. Der Frage nach dem Bestehen der ursprünglichen Absichten der Aktion, u.a. nach der Verbindung von Unterhaltung und Bildung, wird Diplomarbeit nachgegangen. Gleich blieb die Publikumsstruktur. BesucherInnen/AbonnentInnen beehren ihre Spielstätte seit mehreren Jahrzehnten, sie wurden damit „alt“; und so muss sich das Volkstheater in den Bezirken sogar sagen lassen, es sei ein „Pensionistentheater“. Eine Publikumsforschung im abschließenden Kapitel der Arbeit zeigt auf, dass die Bezeichnung „Abonnententheater“ eher auf die Aktion „Volkstheater in den Bezirken“ zutrifft als die Bezeichnung („Pensionistentheater“), da 88% der befragten Gäste angaben, ein Abonnement zu besitzen.57 years ago, Leon Epp and his associates at the department of culture in the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions („Österreichischer Gewerkschaftsbund”) had the idea to bring VOLKSTheater to people who live in the outlying districts of Vienna. In 1999 this so called sales promotion („Aktion“)/tour („Tournee”) „Volkstheater in den Außenbezirken” was said to be written off. The Austrian Chamber of Labour („Arbeiterkammer“), providing the financial backup of the tour since the beginning, had stopped its subsidies. In 2000 the municipality of Vienna has stepped in and since then has provided the financial backing for the traditional sales promotion of the Volkstheater. In 2005 when Michael Schottenberg became director of the Volkstheater and Doris Weiner started organizing the tour, it has been given a new name – „Volkstheater in den Bezirken“. Also the selected plays have been relaunched. Five times a year new genres and well known actors of the „main house“ at „Weghuberpark“ in the 7th district of Vienna play to the audiences on 20 stages („Spielstätten“) all over Vienna. The connection between actors and audience is upgraded and improved because of the „Bezirke-Café“. This kind of „entertainment“ as well as Schottenberg’s statement that he would like to offer entertainment in combination with attitude („Unterhaltung mit Haltung“) lead to the title of this thesis. Its aim is to examine the question of how the original purpose of the tour still exists. One thing that definitely still exists is the structure of the audience. Mostly season ticket holders („Abonnenten“) have attended performances since decades, they have grown old with it and that is one reason why the „Volkstheater in den Bezirken“ is said to be a theatre for retirees („Pensionistentheater“). The results of an opinion poll in the final chapter of the thesis allow us to assume that the description “season-ticket-holders-theatre” („Abonnententheater“) is more appropriate than the description “theatre for retirees”, because 88% of the interviewed guests declared to own a season ticket

The major literary polemicso Karl Kraus

This study of the most important of Kraus's polemics against literary contemporaries centres on the relation of language and character. Any attempt simply to extract his opinions or to measure his verdicts against accepted critical opinion has been eschewed, as a misinterpretation of Kraus's whole purpose. Since his polemics were two- pronged attacks - on style and character - his conceptions of language and personality are outlined, and also related to his demand that the polemicist should embody artistic values. As a background to his demand for unity of man and work, the construction of his persona and the dualism in his thought and its implications for his critical procedure are discussed. His polemics are assessed in relation to his success both in exposing opponents and in personally exemplifying his artistic ethic. His case against Hermann Bahr is amplified by independent evidence that suggests a closer connection between style and behaviour than is evident from Kraus's own polemics. In treating of the relation between ethics and style in the polemic against Maximilian Harden, the unity in Kraus's approach is contrasted to Harden’s dualism. Kraus's twenty-year feud with Alfred Kerr is traced in detail, their different tactics are analysed, and the discrepancy between moral victory and practical success is noted. Apart from the personal and publicistic aspects of the polemic against Franz Werfel, the crucial questions it raises as to the validity of Kraus's linguistic formula are discussed. This was relevant to polemical demands, but rather rigid, as particularly the Werfel case shows; Kraus did not investigate all significant manifestations of character in style. Against Stefan George he failed to exemplify his ideal of unity, in that his individual criticisms of George’s translations of Shakespeare's Sonnets are valid, but his own versions fall short of the perfection required to vindicate his polemical position

Wien um 1900 zwischen Kunst und Alltag

Das Wienbild Tadeusz Rittners soll anhand seiner bisher nicht vollständig bibliographisch erfassten Feuilletonreihe Aus Wien in der Zeitung Czas untersucht und thematisch ausgearbeitet werden. Thematische Leitfäden aus Literatur, bildender Kunst, Architektur, Wiener Klischee- und Alltagsbilder sollen durch das Kaleidoskop Rittners, sowohl in ihrer Klarheit, als auch in einer ästhetisch bzw. ethisch verzerrten Darstellung näher beleuchtet und überdies in Vergleich mit der Ästhetikauffassung anderer Vertreter der Wiener Moderne gesetzt werden. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der ambivalenten Haltung Tadeusz Rittners zur Stadt Wien und ihren Inhalten. Wie ein roter Faden zieht sich eine innere Zerrissenheit durch Rittners Schaffen und Leben. Er war ein typischer Vertreter des pluralistischen Mitteleuropas der Jahrhundertwende, eingenommen von Faktoren, zwischen denen er Zeit seines Lebens versuchte zu balancieren. Er stand zwischen der Wiener Moderne und des Jungen Polens, zwischen der polnischen und der deutschen Sprache, zwischen Beruf und Berufung, zwischen Ästhetik und Ethik, zwischen Multinationalität und staatlicher Homogenität. Rittners Feuilletons zeugen von seiner ambivalenten Person und geben eine damit verbundene literarische und sozialkritische Verarbeitung wieder. Rittner fertigte mit seiner Feuilletonreihe eine Darstellung der Stadt Wien um 1900, die sowohl von persönlicher Nähe als auch von Distanz geprägt ist

Inhibition of Calpains by Calpastatin: Implications for Cellular and Functional Damage Following Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a devastating health problem based on its high incidence, economic burden, and lack of effective pharmacological treatment. Individuals who suffer an injury often experience lifelong disability. TBI results in abrupt, initial cell damage leading to delayed neuronal death. The calcium-activated proteases, calpains, are known to contribute to this secondary neurodegenerative cascade. Prolonged activation of calpains results in proteolysis of numerous cellular substrates including cytoskeletal components, membrane receptors, and cytosolic proteins, contributing to cell demise despite coincident expression of calpastatin, the specific inhibitor of calpains. A comprehensive analysis using two separate calpastatin transgenic mouse lines was performed to test the hypothesis that calpastatin overexpression will reduce posttraumatic calpain activity affording neuroprotection and behavioral efficacy. Increased calpastatin expression was achieved using transgenic mice that overexpress the human calpastatin (hCAST) construct under control of a neuron-specific calcium-calmodulin dependent kinase II alpha or a ubiquitous prion protein promoter. Both transgenic lines exhibited enhanced calpastatin expression within the brain, extending into peripheral tissues under the prion protein promoter. hCAST overexpression significantly reduced protease activity confirmed by reductions in acute calpain-mediated substrate proteolysis in the cortex and hippocampus following controlled cortical impact brain injury. Aspects of posttraumatic motor and cognitive behavioral deficits were also lessened in hCAST transgenic mice compared to their wildtype littermates. However, volumetric analyses of neocortical contusion revealed no histological neuroprotection at either acute or long-term time points in either transgenic line. Partial hippocampal neuroprotection observed at a moderate injury severity in neuron-specific calpastatin overexpressing transgenic mice was lost after severe TBI. Greater levels of calpastatin under the prion protein promoter line failed to protect against hippocampal cell loss after severe brain injury. This study underscores the effectiveness of calpastatin overexpression in reducing calpain-mediated proteolysis and behavioral impairment after TBI, supporting the therapeutic potential for calpain inhibition. However, the reduction in proteolysis without accompanied neocortical neuroprotection suggests the involvement of other factors that are critical for neuronal survival after contusion brain injury. Augmenting calpastatin levels may be an effective method for calpain inhibition and may have efficacy in reducing behavioral morbidity after TBI and neurodegenerative disorders
