    Using human-inspired models for guiding robot locomotion

    Cette thèse a été effectuée dans le cadre du projet européen Koroibot dont l'objectif est le développement d'algorithmes de marche avancés pour les robots humanoïdes. Dans le but de contrôler les robots d'une manière sûre et efficace chez les humains, il est nécessaire de comprendre les règles, les principes et les stratégies de l'homme lors de la locomotion et de les transférer à des robots. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier et d'identifier les stratégies de locomotion humaine et créer des algorithmes qui pourraient être utilisés pour améliorer les capacités du robot. La contribution principale est l'analyse sur les principes de piétons qui guident les stratégies d'évitement des collisions. En particulier, nous observons comment les humains adapter une tâche de locomotion objectif direct quand ils ont à interférer avec un obstacle en mouvement traversant leur chemin. Nous montrons les différences entre la stratégie définie par les humains pour éviter un obstacle non-collaboratif et la stratégie pour éviter un autre être humain, et la façon dont les humains interagissent avec un objet si se déplaçant en manier simil à l'humaine. Deuxièmement, nous présentons un travail effectué en collaboration avec les neuroscientifiques de calcul. Nous proposons une nouvelle approche pour synthétiser réalistes complexes mouvements du robot humanoïde avec des primitives de mouvement. Trajectoires humaines walking-to-grasp ont été enregistrés. L'ensemble des mouvements du corps sont reciblées et proportionnée afin de correspondre à la cinématique de robots humanoïdes. Sur la base de cette base de données des mouvements, nous extrayons les primitives de mouvement. Nous montrons que ces signaux sources peuvent être exprimées sous forme de solutions stables d'un système dynamique autonome, qui peut être considéré comme un système de central pattern generators (CPGs). Sur la base de cette approche, les stratégies réactives walking-to-grasp ont été développés et expérimenté avec succès sur le robot humanoïde HRP-2 au LAAS-CNRS. Dans la troisième partie de la thèse, nous présentons une nouvelle approche du problème de pilotage d'un robot soumis à des contraintes non holonomes par une porte en utilisant l'asservissement visuel. La porte est représentée par deux points de repère situés sur ses supports verticaux. La plan géométric qui a été construit autour de la porte est constituée de faisceaux de hyperboles, des ellipses et des cercles orthogonaux. Nous montrons que cette géométrie peut être mesurée directement dans le plan d'image de la caméra et que la stratégie basée sur la vision présentée peut également être lié à l'homme. Simulation et expériences réalistes sont présentés pour montrer l'efficacité de nos solutions.This thesis has been done within the framework of the European Project Koroibot which aims at developing advanced algorithms to improve the humanoid robots locomotion. It is organized in three parts. With the aim of steering robots in a safe and efficient manner among humans it is required to understand the rules, principles and strategies of human during locomotion and transfer them to robots. The goal of this thesis is to investigate and identify the human locomotion strategies and create algorithms that could be used to improve robot capabilities. A first contribution is the analysis on pedestrian principles which guide collision avoidance strategies. In particular, we observe how humans adapt a goal-direct locomotion task when they have to interfere with a moving obstacle crossing their way. We show differences both in the strategy set by humans to avoid a non-collaborative obstacle with respect to avoid another human, and the way humans interact with an object moving in human-like way. Secondly, we present a work done in collaboration with computational neuroscientists. We propose a new approach to synthetize realistic complex humanoid robot movements with motion primitives. Human walking-to-grasp trajectories have been recorded. The whole body movements are retargeted and scaled in order to match the humanoid robot kinematics. Based on this database of movements, we extract the motion primitives. We prove that these sources signals can be expressed as stable solutions of an autonomous dynamical system, which can be regarded as a system of coupled central pattern generators (CPGs). Based on this approach, reactive walking-to-grasp strategies have been developed and successfully experimented on the humanoid robot HRP at LAAS-CNRS. In the third part of the thesis, we present a new approach to the problem of vision-based steering of robot subject to non-holonomic constrained to pass through a door. The door is represented by two landmarks located on its vertical supports. The planar geometry that has been built around the door consists of bundles of hyperbolae, ellipses, and orthogonal circles. We prove that this geometry can be directly measured in the camera image plane and that the proposed vision-based control strategy can also be related to human. Realistic simulation and experiments are reported to show the effectiveness of our solutions

    A robotic platform for precision agriculture and applications

    Agricultural techniques have been improved over the centuries to match with the growing demand of an increase in global population. Farming applications are facing new challenges to satisfy global needs and the recent technology advancements in terms of robotic platforms can be exploited. As the orchard management is one of the most challenging applications because of its tree structure and the required interaction with the environment, it was targeted also by the University of Bologna research group to provide a customized solution addressing new concept for agricultural vehicles. The result of this research has blossomed into a new lightweight tracked vehicle capable of performing autonomous navigation both in the open-filed scenario and while travelling inside orchards for what has been called in-row navigation. The mechanical design concept, together with customized software implementation has been detailed to highlight the strengths of the platform and some further improvements envisioned to improve the overall performances. Static stability testing has proved that the vehicle can withstand steep slopes scenarios. Some improvements have also been investigated to refine the estimation of the slippage that occurs during turning maneuvers and that is typical of skid-steering tracked vehicles. The software architecture has been implemented using the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, so to exploit community available packages related to common and basic functions, such as sensor interfaces, while allowing dedicated custom implementation of the navigation algorithm developed. Real-world testing inside the university’s experimental orchards have proven the robustness and stability of the solution with more than 800 hours of fieldwork. The vehicle has also enabled a wide range of autonomous tasks such as spraying, mowing, and on-the-field data collection capabilities. The latter can be exploited to automatically estimate relevant orchard properties such as fruit counting and sizing, canopy properties estimation, and autonomous fruit harvesting with post-harvesting estimations.Le tecniche agricole sono state migliorate nel corso dei secoli per soddisfare la crescente domanda di aumento della popolazione mondiale. I recenti progressi tecnologici in termini di piattaforme robotiche possono essere sfruttati in questo contesto. Poiché la gestione del frutteto è una delle applicazioni più impegnative, a causa della sua struttura arborea e della necessaria interazione con l'ambiente, è stata oggetto di ricerca per fornire una soluzione personalizzata che sviluppi un nuovo concetto di veicolo agricolo. Il risultato si è concretizzato in un veicolo cingolato leggero, capace di effettuare una navigazione autonoma sia nello scenario di pieno campo che all'interno dei frutteti (navigazione interfilare). La progettazione meccanica, insieme all'implementazione del software, sono stati dettagliati per evidenziarne i punti di forza, accanto ad alcuni ulteriori miglioramenti previsti per incrementarne le prestazioni complessive. I test di stabilità statica hanno dimostrato che il veicolo può resistere a ripidi pendii. Sono stati inoltre studiati miglioramenti per affinare la stima dello slittamento che si verifica durante le manovre di svolta, tipico dei veicoli cingolati. L'architettura software è stata implementata utilizzando il framework Robot Operating System (ROS), in modo da sfruttare i pacchetti disponibili relativi a componenti base, come le interfacce dei sensori, e consentendo al contempo un'implementazione personalizzata degli algoritmi di navigazione sviluppati. I test in condizioni reali all'interno dei frutteti sperimentali dell'università hanno dimostrato la robustezza e la stabilità della soluzione con oltre 800 ore di lavoro sul campo. Il veicolo ha permesso di attivare e svolgere un'ampia gamma di attività agricole in maniera autonoma, come l'irrorazione, la falciatura e la raccolta di dati sul campo. Questi ultimi possono essere sfruttati per stimare automaticamente le proprietà più rilevanti del frutteto, come il conteggio e la calibratura dei frutti, la stima delle proprietà della chioma e la raccolta autonoma dei frutti con stime post-raccolta

    State Feedback Sliding Mode Control of Complex Systems with Applications

    This thesis concerns the development of robust nonlinear control design for complex systems including nonholonomic systems and large-scale systems using sliding mode control (SMC) techniques under the assumption that all system state variables are accessible for design. The main developments in this thesis include: 1). The concept of generalised regular form and design of a novel sliding function. The mathematical definition of generalised regular form is proposed for the first time. It is an extension of the classical regular form, which makes SMC applicable to a wider class of nonlinear systems. A novel sliding function design, which is based on the global implicit function theorem, is proposed to guarantee unique sliding mode dynamics. 2). The development of decentralised SMC for large-scale interconnected systems. For systems with uncertain interconnections which possess the superposition property, a decentralised control scheme is presented to counteract the effect of the uncertainty by using bounds on uncertainties and interconnections. The bounds used in the design are nonlinear functions instead of constant, linear or polynomial functions. The design strategy has also been expanded to a fully nonlinear case for interconnected systems in the generalised regular form. 3). Robust decentralised SMC for a class of nonlinear systems with uncertainties in input distribution. A system with uncertainties in input distribution is full of challenges. A novel method is proposed to deal with such uncertainties for a class of nonlinear interconnected systems. The designed decentralised SMC enhances the robustness of the controlled systems. This thesis also provides case studies of three applications for the proposed approaches. The existence of the generalised regular form is verified in the trajectory tracking control of a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) system. Both simulations and experiments on the WMR are given to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the generalised regular form-based SMC design. A continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system and a longitudinal vehicle-following system are used to test the proposed decentralised SMC schemes. An expanded vehicle-following system with both longitudinal and lateral controllers has been developed to demonstrate the robust control design for system with uncertainties in input distribution

    Lifelong Reinforcement Learning On Mobile Robots

    Machine learning has shown tremendous growth in the past decades, unlocking new capabilities in a variety of fields including computer vision, natural language processing, and robotic control. While the sophistication of individual problems a learning system can handle has greatly advanced, the ability of a system to extend beyond an individual problem to adapt and solve new problems has progressed more slowly. This thesis explores the problem of progressive learning. The goal is to develop methodologies that accumulate, transfer, and adapt knowledge in applied settings where the system is faced with the ambiguity and resource limitations of operating in the physical world. There are undoubtedly many challenges to designing such a system, my thesis looks at the component of this problem related to how knowledge from previous tasks can be a benefit in the domain of reinforcement learning where the agent receives rewards for positive actions. Reinforcement learning is particularly difficult when training on physical systems, like mobile robots, where repeated trials can damage the system and unrestricted exploration is often associated with safety risks. I investigate how knowledge can be efficiently accumulated and applied to future reinforcement learning problems on mobile robots in order to reduce sample complexity and enable systems to adapt to novel settings. Doing this involves mathematical models which can combine knowledge from multiple tasks, methods for restructuring optimizations and data collection to handle sequential updates, and data selection strategies that can be used to address resource limitations

    Enhancing 3D Autonomous Navigation Through Obstacle Fields: Homogeneous Localisation and Mapping, with Obstacle-Aware Trajectory Optimisation

    Small flying robots have numerous potential applications, from quadrotors for search and rescue, infrastructure inspection and package delivery to free-flying satellites for assistance activities inside a space station. To enable these applications, a key challenge is autonomous navigation in 3D, near obstacles on a power, mass and computation constrained platform. This challenge requires a robot to perform localisation, mapping, dynamics-aware trajectory planning and control. The current state-of-the-art uses separate algorithms for each component. Here, the aim is for a more homogeneous approach in the search for improved efficiencies and capabilities. First, an algorithm is described to perform Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping (SLAM) with physical, 3D map representation that can also be used to represent obstacles for trajectory planning: Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) surfaces. Termed NURBSLAM, this algorithm is shown to combine the typically separate tasks of localisation and obstacle mapping. Second, a trajectory optimisation algorithm is presented that produces dynamically-optimal trajectories with direct consideration of obstacles, providing a middle ground between path planners and trajectory smoothers. Called the Admissible Subspace TRajectory Optimiser (ASTRO), the algorithm can produce trajectories that are easier to track than the state-of-the-art for flight near obstacles, as shown in flight tests with quadrotors. For quadrotors to track trajectories, a critical component is the differential flatness transformation that links position and attitude controllers. Existing singularities in this transformation are analysed, solutions are proposed and are then demonstrated in flight tests. Finally, a combined system of NURBSLAM and ASTRO are brought together and tested against the state-of-the-art in a novel simulation environment to prove the concept that a single 3D representation can be used for localisation, mapping, and planning

    On the connection of probabilistic model checking, planning, and learning for system verification

    This thesis presents approaches using techniques from the model checking, planning, and learning community to make systems more reliable and perspicuous. First, two heuristic search and dynamic programming algorithms are adapted to be able to check extremal reachability probabilities, expected accumulated rewards, and their bounded versions, on general Markov decision processes (MDPs). Thereby, the problem space originally solvable by these algorithms is enlarged considerably. Correctness and optimality proofs for the adapted algorithms are given, and in a comprehensive case study on established benchmarks it is shown that the implementation, called Modysh, is competitive with state-of-the-art model checkers and even outperforms them on very large state spaces. Second, Deep Statistical Model Checking (DSMC) is introduced, usable for quality assessment and learning pipeline analysis of systems incorporating trained decision-making agents, like neural networks (NNs). The idea of DSMC is to use statistical model checking to assess NNs resolving nondeterminism in systems modeled as MDPs. The versatility of DSMC is exemplified in a number of case studies on Racetrack, an MDP benchmark designed for this purpose, flexibly modeling the autonomous driving challenge. In a comprehensive scalability study it is demonstrated that DSMC is a lightweight technique tackling the complexity of NN analysis in combination with the state space explosion problem.Diese Arbeit präsentiert Ansätze, die Techniken aus dem Model Checking, Planning und Learning Bereich verwenden, um Systeme verlässlicher und klarer verständlich zu machen. Zuerst werden zwei Algorithmen für heuristische Suche und dynamisches Programmieren angepasst, um Extremwerte für Erreichbarkeitswahrscheinlichkeiten, Erwartungswerte für Kosten und beschränkte Varianten davon, auf generellen Markov Entscheidungsprozessen (MDPs) zu untersuchen. Damit wird der Problemraum, der ursprünglich mit diesen Algorithmen gelöst wurde, deutlich erweitert. Korrektheits- und Optimalitätsbeweise für die angepassten Algorithmen werden gegeben und in einer umfassenden Fallstudie wird gezeigt, dass die Implementierung, namens Modysh, konkurrenzfähig mit den modernsten Model Checkern ist und deren Leistung auf sehr großen Zustandsräumen sogar übertrifft. Als Zweites wird Deep Statistical Model Checking (DSMC) für die Qualitätsbewertung und Lernanalyse von Systemen mit integrierten trainierten Entscheidungsgenten, wie z.B. neuronalen Netzen (NN), eingeführt. Die Idee von DSMC ist es, statistisches Model Checking zur Bewertung von NNs zu nutzen, die Nichtdeterminismus in Systemen, die als MDPs modelliert sind, auflösen. Die Vielseitigkeit des Ansatzes wird in mehreren Fallbeispielen auf Racetrack gezeigt, einer MDP Benchmark, die zu diesem Zweck entwickelt wurde und die Herausforderung des autonomen Fahrens flexibel modelliert. In einer umfassenden Skalierbarkeitsstudie wird demonstriert, dass DSMC eine leichtgewichtige Technik ist, die die Komplexität der NN-Analyse in Kombination mit dem State Space Explosion Problem bewältigt

    Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud

    Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithms’ performance on Amazon’s Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations.     Epsilon-Optimal Synthesis for Unicycle-Like Vehicles With Limited Field-of-View Sensors

    In this paper, we study the minimum length paths covered by the center of a unicycle equipped with a limited field-of-view (FOV) camera, which must keep a given landmark in sight. Previous works on this subject have provided the optimal synthesis for the cases in which the FOV is only limited in the horizontal directions (i.e., left and right bounds) or in the vertical directions (i.e., upper and lower bounds). In this paper, we show how to merge previous results and hence obtain, for a realistic image plane modeled as a rectangle, a finite alphabet of extremal arcs and the overall synthesis. As shown, this objective cannot be straightforwardly achieved from previous results but needs further analysis and developments. Moreover, there are initial configurations such that there exists no optimal path. Nonetheless, we are always able to provide an optimal path whose length approximates arbitrarily well any other shorter path. As final results, we provide a partition of the motion plane in regions such that the optimal or optimal path from each point in that region is univocally determined
