Argument-based Belief in Topological Structures
This paper combines two studies: a topological semantics for epistemic
notions and abstract argumentation theory. In our combined setting, we use a
topological semantics to represent the structure of an agent's collection of
evidence, and we use argumentation theory to single out the relevant sets of
evidence through which a notion of beliefs grounded on arguments is defined. We
discuss the formal properties of this newly defined notion, providing also a
formal language with a matching modality together with a sound and complete
axiom system for it. Despite the fact that our agent can combine her evidence
in a 'rational' way (captured via the topological structure), argument-based
beliefs are not closed under conjunction. This illustrates the difference
between an agent's reasoning abilities (i.e. the way she is able to combine her
available evidence) and the closure properties of her beliefs. We use this
point to argue for why the failure of closure under conjunction of belief

Discourse network analysis: policy debates as dynamic networks
Political discourse is the verbal interaction between political actors. Political actors make normative claims about policies conditional on each other. This renders discourse a dynamic network phenomenon. Accordingly, the structure and dynamics of policy debates can be analyzed with a combination of content analysis and dynamic network analysis. After annotating statements of actors in text sources, networks can be created from these structured data, such as congruence or conflict networks at the actor or concept level, affiliation networks of actors and concept stances, and longitudinal versions of these networks. The resulting network data reveal important properties of a debate, such as the structure of advocacy coalitions or discourse coalitions, polarization and consensus formation, and underlying endogenous processes like popularity, reciprocity, or social balance. The added value of discourse network analysis over survey-based policy network research is that policy processes can be analyzed from a longitudinal perspective. Inferential techniques for understanding the micro-level processes governing political discourse are being developed
Offline and online data: on upgrading functional information to knowledge
This paper addresses the problem of upgrading functional information to knowledge. Functional information is defined as syntactically well-formed, meaningful and collectively opaque data. Its use in the formal epistemology of information theories is crucial to solve the debate on the veridical nature of information, and it represents the companion notion to standard strongly semantic information, defined as well-formed, meaningful and true data. The formal framework, on which the definitions are based, uses a contextual version of the verificationist principle of truth in order to connect functional to semantic information, avoiding Gettierization and decoupling from true informational contents. The upgrade operation from functional information uses the machinery of epistemic modalities in order to add data localization and accessibility as its main properties. We show in this way the conceptual worthiness of this notion for issues in contemporary epistemology debates, such as the explanation of knowledge process acquisition from information retrieval systems, and open data repositories
Explicit Evidence Systems with Common Knowledge
Justification logics are epistemic logics that explicitly include
justifications for the agents' knowledge. We develop a multi-agent
justification logic with evidence terms for individual agents as well as for
common knowledge. We define a Kripke-style semantics that is similar to
Fitting's semantics for the Logic of Proofs LP. We show the soundness,
completeness, and finite model property of our multi-agent justification logic
with respect to this Kripke-style semantics. We demonstrate that our logic is a
conservative extension of Yavorskaya's minimal bimodal explicit evidence logic,
which is a two-agent version of LP. We discuss the relationship of our logic to
the multi-agent modal logic S4 with common knowledge. Finally, we give a brief
analysis of the coordinated attack problem in the newly developed language of
our logic
Modeling Terrorist Radicalization
Recent high-profile terrorism arrests and litigation in New York, Colorado, and Detroit have brought public attention to the question of how the government should respond to the possibility of domestic-origin terrorism linked to al Qaeda. This symposium essay identifies and discussing one emerging approach in the United States and Europe which attends to the process of terrorist “radicalization.” States on both sides of the Atlantic are investing increasingly in developing an epistemology of terrorist violence. The results have implications for how policing resources are allocated, whether privacy rights are respected, and how religious liberty may be exercised. This essay traces the development of state discourses on “radicalization” in the United States and the United Kingdom. It argues that understanding this new “radicalization” discourse entails attention to interactions between nations and between the federal government and states as well as to the political economy of counter-terrorism
Characterizing perfect recall using next-step temporal operators in S5 and sub-S5 Epistemic Temporal Logic
We review the notion of perfect recall in the literature on interpreted
systems, game theory, and epistemic logic. In the context of Epistemic Temporal
Logic (ETL), we give a (to our knowledge) novel frame condition for perfect
recall, which is local and can straightforwardly be translated to a defining
formula in a language that only has next-step temporal operators. This frame
condition also gives rise to a complete axiomatization for S5 ETL frames with
perfect recall. We then consider how to extend and consolidate the notion of
perfect recall in sub-S5 settings, where the various notions discussed are no
longer equivalent
