Església local i Església universal, mútua interioritat?
There would be three ways to consider the relationship between the local Church and the Church
Universal: giving priority to the fullness of the local Church, or giving priority to the universality of the
Church, or finally, bringing out their simultaneity and mutual interiority. This latter is the focus given by an ecclesiology of communion and the one advocated in this article, from the perspective of synodality
and collegiality. The article adopts a certain position as its basis. The affirmation of mutual interiority is
rooted in the fact that the Eucharist is a manifestation of the Church as the Body of Christ, the Body
of communion in one locality, where unity and diversity interact and where uniformity and division are
excluded. The person of the bishop who serves this community is crucial and from that point of view
there are visible gaps in Latin Catholic ecclesiology, essentially because of the infrequent practice of
collegiality and synodality on the local, inter-local and ecumenical, or universal levels
In this article, the author does an in-depth study the ecclesiological concept of synodality as a vertebrating axis of the ecclesiology of communion. This implies sketching its exercise in the Church at the local, inter-local or regional and ecumenical or universal level. And from the triple dimension of the ministry of communion or apostolic ministry, that is, personal, collegial, and synodal, the author distinguishes synodality from collegiality, two concepts that often are presented as synonyms. At the end of the article, the author suggests, in the line opened by the Encyclical Letter Ut Unum Sint by John Paul II, that the Canon 34 of the Apostles offers the ecclesiological frame where to place the service to unity and to communion of the bishop of the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul.
NB: It is necessary to point out that this article has been written before the plenary session of the International Mixed Commission for the Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated in Ravenna (8-14 October, 2007), where the texts speak about conciliarity as equivalent to synodality. The document that has come out of it (Document of Ravenna 2007) is entitled: The Ecclesiological and Canonical Consequences of the Sacramental Nature of the Church, Ecclesiastical Communion, Conciliarity and Authority
Two Constantine's dispositions -Codex Theodosianus I, 27, I (318) and Constitutio Sirmondina I (333)- constitutes the first legal sanction of bishops' juridic power concerning affairs foreign to religion. Around these laws, a new ecclesiastical institution arises, the episcopalis audientia, which, following traditional Christian precepts, applies imperial laws to resolve causes on civil matter. The discussed veracity of the Constantinian constitutions and the variety of interpretations given exceeds the strict juridic field to deepen into the changing Roman society of the fourth century
