    A comparison of the UK Standard Assessment Procedure and detailed simulation of solar energy systems for dwellings

    The drive to reduce worldwide Carbon Emissions directly associated with dwellings and to achieve a zero carbon home dictates that Renewable Energy Technologies will have an increasingly large role in the built environment. Created by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is the UK Government's approved methodology for assessing the energy ratings of dwellings. This paper presents an evaluation of the advantage given to SAP ratings by the domestic installation of typical Photovoltaic (PV) and Solar Domestic Hot Water (SDHW) systems in the UK. Comparable PV and SDHW systems will also be simulated with more detailed modelling packages. Results suggest that calculation variances can exist between the SAP methodology and detailed simulation methods, especially for higher performance systems that deviate from the default efficiency parameters

    Environmental performance of spaces enclosed or semi-enclosed by fabric membrane structures

Since the 1960s a large evolution took place in the fabric structures industry, as they became more complex with time, and designers have been able to keep up with the structural implications of this changing situation. Sophisticated analytical models and computer software have facilitated the structural design of tensile membrane structures (TMS) and this has produced a diverse and complex range of design and form solutions. However, environmental issues continue to be dealt with in a cursory manner, which is still today unable to fully satisfy the client’s requirements. With the vast interest in these structures, designers and manufacturers alike realised that if membrane enclosed spaces is to compete with other more conventional enclosures, a clear understanding of their environmental behaviour should be available to them. Moreover that if membrane enclosed spaces were to aspire to the same level of environmental performance as more conventional buildings, it would be necessary to develop tailored analytical techniques, which could be used to assess the likely performance of various design alternatives. This paper explores the thermal performance of membrane structures, and how these structures can be used as climate modifiers in spaces enclosed or semi enclosed by fabric membrane skins, providing thermal comfort for the occupiers. Analytical techniques that are used to investigate the environmental behaviour of fabric membranes and assessing their liability will be reviewed. The paper also looks at some of the work done by other researchers in the investigation of the thermal behaviour of fabric membranes by different techniques

    Integration of environmental data in BIM tool & linked building data

    Environmental assessment is a critical need to ensure building sustainability. In order to enhance the sustainability of building, involved actors should be able to access and share not only information about the building but also data about products and especially their environmental assessment. Among several approaches that have been proposed to achieve that, semantic web technologies stand out from the crowd by their capabilities to share data and enhance interoperability in between the most heterogeneous systems. This paper presents the implementation of a method in which semantic web technologies and particularly Linked Data have been combined with Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools to foster building sustainability by introducing products with their environmental assessment in building data during the modelling phase. Based on Linked Building Data (LBD) vocabularies and environmental data, several ontologies have been generated in order to make both of them available as Resource Description Framework (RDF) graphs. A database access plugin has been developed and installed in a BIM tool. In that way, the LBD generated from the BIM tool contains, for each product a reference to its environmental assessment which is contained in a triplestore

    Large-scale hydrological modelling has become increasingly wide-spread during the last decade. An annual workshop series on large-scale hydrological modelling has provided, since 1997, a forum to the German-speaking community for discussing recent developments and achievements in this research area. In this paper we present the findings from the 2007 workshop which focused on advances and visions in large-scale hydrological modelling. We identify the state of the art, difficulties and research perspectives with respect to the themes "sensitivity of model results", "integrated modelling" and "coupling of processes in hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere". Some achievements in large-scale hydrological modelling during the last ten years are presented together with a selection of remaining challenges for the future

    Recent advances in directional statistics

    Mainstream statistical methodology is generally applicable to data observed in Euclidean space. There are, however, numerous contexts of considerable scientific interest in which the natural supports for the data under consideration are Riemannian manifolds like the unit circle, torus, sphere and their extensions. Typically, such data can be represented using one or more directions, and directional statistics is the branch of statistics that deals with their analysis. In this paper we provide a review of the many recent developments in the field since the publication of Mardia and Jupp (1999), still the most comprehensive text on directional statistics. Many of those developments have been stimulated by interesting applications in fields as diverse as astronomy, medicine, genetics, neurology, aeronautics, acoustics, image analysis, text mining, environmetrics, and machine learning. We begin by considering developments for the exploratory analysis of directional data before progressing to distributional models, general approaches to inference, hypothesis testing, regression, nonparametric curve estimation, methods for dimension reduction, classification and clustering, and the modelling of time series, spatial and spatio-temporal data. An overview of currently available software for analysing directional data is also provided, and potential future developments discussed.Comment: 61 page
