    Using bioaugmentation and biostimulation approach for contaminated soil bioremediation were investigated andimplemented on field scale. We combine those approaches by culturing massively the petrophilic indigenousmicroorganisms from chronically contaminated soil enriched by mixed manure. Through these methods, bioremediationperformance revealed promising results in removing the petroleum hydrocarbons comparatively using metabolite byproduct such as biosurfactant, specific enzymes and other extra-cellular product which are considered as a difficult taskand will impact on cost increase

    The cleanup of this country's federal facilities can affect a wide range of tribal and community interests and concerns. The technologies now in use, or being proposed by the Department of Energy, Department of Defense and other federal agencies can affect tribal treaty protected fishing, hunting and other rights, affect air and water quality thereby requiring the tribe to bear the burden of increased environmental regulation. The International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management developed a tribal and community decision-maker's Environmental Remediation Technology Assessment Matrix that will permit tribes and communities to array technical information about environmental remediation technologies against a backdrop of tribal and community environmental, health and safety, cultural, religious, treaty and other concerns and interests. Ultimately, the matrix will allow tribes and communities to assess the impact of proposed technologies on the wide range of tribal and community interests and will promote more informed participation in federal facility cleanup activities

    Perchlorate environmental occurrences, health effects, and remediation technologies

    Perchlorate is a widespread pollutant in the environment. It can be produced naturally by atmospheric photochemical reactions or synthesized in large quantities for industrial, military, and pyrotechnic applications. Perchlorate can affect human thyroid function by interfering with iodide uptake and thus has significant public health ramifications. This presentation will provide the current state of science and technology with respect to the source and occurrence of perchlorate in natural environments, its risk assessment, and recent advances in treatment technologies to remove perchlorate from contaminated water. Although perchlorate is a powerful oxidant, it is highly soluble and stable in water and soil and can thus persist in the environment. The discussion will focus on various treatment technologies such as selective ion exchange, reverse osmosis, and biological reduction which can be used to remove perchlorate from contaminated water and thus to minimize its health risks to the public.peer-reviewe

    Principles of Environmental Remediation in Open and Closed Systems: A Case Study of the Lake Dianchi Drainage Basin

    The predominant links between systems science and environmental science are usually made by disciplines such as oceanography, climatology and ecology, but the relationship between systems science and environmental remediation, including contaminated soil and site remediation and solid and wastewater treatment, has not been fully examined. This paper therefore considers the principles of environmental remediation and waste treatment in the context of open and closed systems theory. The characteristics of these systems, to a large degree, dictate the types and parameters of possible interventions, particularly when operating at larger time and distance scales. Three systems are discussed: closed systems, semi-open systems and fully open systems, providing an overview of system characteristics and behavior, along with examples of interventions commonly found in environmental remediation practice. The need for an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to environmental science, technology and engineering when effecting successful open system remediation is also highlighted. A more detailed case study of these systems in the context of Lake Dianchi and its catchment system in Kunming is provided. Located in southern China, the Lake Dianchi drainage basin provides a valuable lesson in socially responsible, long-term environmental remediation, not only because it has been the focus of extensive local and international research and environmental remediation efforts since the 1990s, but because it provides credible evidence of the various types of systems described in this paper

    Pollution from numerous contaminants due to many anthropogenic activities affects soils quality. Industrialized countries have many contaminated sites; their remediation is a priority in environmental legislation. The aim of this overview is to consider the evolution of soil remediation from consolidated invasive technologies to environmentally friendly green strategies. The selection of technology is no longer exclusively based on eliminating the source of pollution but aims at remediation, which includes the recovery of soil quality. \u201cGreen remediation\u201d appears to be the key to addressing the issue of remediation of contaminated sites as it focuses on environmental quality, including the preservation of the environment. Further developments in green remediation reflect the aim of promoting clean-up strategies that also address the effects of climate change. Sustainable and resilient remediation faces the environmental challenge of achieving targets while reducing the environmental damage caused by clean-up interventions and must involve an awareness that social systems and environmental systems are closely connected

    New Perspectives for Electrodialytic Remediation

    Electrodialytic remediation has been widely used for the recovery of different contaminants from numerous matrices, such as, for example, polluted soils, wastewater sludge, fly ash, mine tailing or harbour sediments. The electrodialytic remediation is an enhancement of the electrokinetic remediation technique, and it consists of the use of ion-exchange membranes for the control of the acid and the alkaline fronts generated in the electrochemical processes. While the standard electrodialytic cell is usually built with three-compartment configuration, it has been shown that for the remediation of matrices that require acid environment, a two-compartment cell has given satisfactory removal efficiencies with reduced energy costs. Recycling secondary batteries, with growing demand, has an increasing economic and environmental interest. This work focusses on the proposal of the electrodialytic remediation technique as a possible application for the recycling of lithium-ion cells and other secondary batteries. The recovery of valuable components, such as lithium, manganese, cobalt of phosphorous, based on current recycling processes and the characterization of solid waste is addressed.This work has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 778045.     Community Perceptions of the Environmental Remediation Effort in the Milwaukee River Estuary

    The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Milwaukee County Parks Department have been working on an environmental remediation project that seeks to remove chemical contaminants and pollution from the Milwaukee River. The purpose of this research is to discover community member’s perceptions on the quality and safety of the Milwaukee River, and determine whether their perspectives on safe and desirable uses of the river differ from those of the organizations overseeing the Great Lake Legacy Act (GLLA) project. The results from this study show that the communities in the project area believe that the quality of the river has improved but it is still unsafe in some ways. This study shows that understanding the perceptions about quality, safety and uses of the river can improve the relationship between remediation organizations and the affected community.Ope
