Smart Grid Technologies in Europe: An Overview
The old electricity network infrastructure has proven to be inadequate, with respect to modern challenges such as alternative energy sources, electricity demand and energy saving policies. Moreover, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) seem to have reached an adequate level of reliability and flexibility in order to support a new concept of electricity networkāthe smart grid. In this work, we will analyse the state-of-the-art of smart grids, in their technical, management, security, and optimization aspects. We will also provide a brief overview of the regulatory aspects involved in the development of a smart grid, mainly from the viewpoint of the European Unio
Software Defined Networks based Smart Grid Communication: A Comprehensive Survey
The current power grid is no longer a feasible solution due to
ever-increasing user demand of electricity, old infrastructure, and reliability
issues and thus require transformation to a better grid a.k.a., smart grid
(SG). The key features that distinguish SG from the conventional electrical
power grid are its capability to perform two-way communication, demand side
management, and real time pricing. Despite all these advantages that SG will
bring, there are certain issues which are specific to SG communication system.
For instance, network management of current SG systems is complex, time
consuming, and done manually. Moreover, SG communication (SGC) system is built
on different vendor specific devices and protocols. Therefore, the current SG
systems are not protocol independent, thus leading to interoperability issue.
Software defined network (SDN) has been proposed to monitor and manage the
communication networks globally. This article serves as a comprehensive survey
on SDN-based SGC. In this article, we first discuss taxonomy of advantages of
SDNbased SGC.We then discuss SDN-based SGC architectures, along with case
studies. Our article provides an in-depth discussion on routing schemes for
SDN-based SGC. We also provide detailed survey of security and privacy schemes
applied to SDN-based SGC. We furthermore present challenges, open issues, and
future research directions related to SDN-based SGC.Comment: Accepte
A Survey on Load Balancing Algorithms for VM Placement in Cloud Computing
The emergence of cloud computing based on virtualization technologies brings
huge opportunities to host virtual resource at low cost without the need of
owning any infrastructure. Virtualization technologies enable users to acquire,
configure and be charged on pay-per-use basis. However, Cloud data centers
mostly comprise heterogeneous commodity servers hosting multiple virtual
machines (VMs) with potential various specifications and fluctuating resource
usages, which may cause imbalanced resource utilization within servers that may
lead to performance degradation and service level agreements (SLAs) violations.
To achieve efficient scheduling, these challenges should be addressed and
solved by using load balancing strategies, which have been proved to be NP-hard
problem. From multiple perspectives, this work identifies the challenges and
analyzes existing algorithms for allocating VMs to PMs in infrastructure
Clouds, especially focuses on load balancing. A detailed classification
targeting load balancing algorithms for VM placement in cloud data centers is
investigated and the surveyed algorithms are classified according to the
classification. The goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive and
comparative understanding of existing literature and aid researchers by
providing an insight for potential future enhancements.Comment: 22 Pages, 4 Figures, 4 Tables, in pres
DCDIDP: A distributed, collaborative, and data-driven intrusion detection and prevention framework for cloud computing environments
With the growing popularity of cloud computing, the exploitation of possible vulnerabilities grows at the same pace; the distributed nature of the cloud makes it an attractive target for potential intruders. Despite security issues delaying its adoption, cloud computing has already become an unstoppable force; thus, security mechanisms to ensure its secure adoption are an immediate need. Here, we focus on intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPSs) to defend against the intruders. In this paper, we propose a Distributed, Collaborative, and Data-driven Intrusion Detection and Prevention system (DCDIDP). Its goal is to make use of the resources in the cloud and provide a holistic IDPS for all cloud service providers which collaborate with other peers in a distributed manner at different architectural levels to respond to attacks. We present the DCDIDP framework, whose infrastructure level is composed of three logical layers: network, host, and global as well as platform and software levels. Then, we review its components and discuss some existing approaches to be used for the modules in our proposed framework. Furthermore, we discuss developing a comprehensive trust management framework to support the establishment and evolution of trust among different cloud service providers. Ā© 2011 ICST
