    Get PDF
Environment scanning is an information-rich activity which helps organizations to survive in a competitive business environment. The main objective of this study was to investigate perceptions of private education centres in Singapore of the importance of environment scanning for their business success, strategies used for gathering information about business factors, frequency of information collection, and processing and utilization of the gathered information. Data from 40 private education centres was collected through a questionnaire. It was found that most of the environment scanning activities were conducted regularly by the surveyed centres, except the step of information processing and distribution. Among various business factors, information about customers and immediate competitors were perceived to be more important than other factors. Based on the findings, it is suggested that organizations should use a variety of information sources to have a more comprehensive understanding of their business environments. They should also recruit adequately trained information professionals to systematically conduct environment scanning activities

Scaling Jobs for the Poor: Reducing Poverty through the Impact Sourcing BPO Approach

    Get PDF
The best way to alleviate poverty is to increase the income of the poor by providing productive employment. A pragmatic approach is to focus on a sector of the economy that is employment intensive and growing rapidly. A good candidate is the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. Impact sourcing is a subset of the BPO sector that focuses on reducing poverty by providing jobs to the poor. While this sounds promising, impact sourcing has not delivered on the promise, at least not yet. We illustrate our argument using in-depth case studies of three of the largest impact sourcing service providers, and provide recommendations on how the impact sourcing sector can achieve greater social impact at scale

RSNA International Trends: A Global Perspective on the COVID-19 Pandemic and Radiology in Late 2020

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged and changed our healthcare systems around the world. There has been a heterogeneity of disease burden, healthcare resources, and non-imaging testing availability, both geographically and over time. In parallel, there has been a continued increase in understanding of how the disease affects patients, effectiveness of therapeutic options, and factors that modulate transmission risk. Here we detail experiences from radiology experts in representative countries from around the world, to share insights gained from local experience. These insights provide a guidepost to help address management challenges as cases continue to rise in many parts of the world and suggest modifications in workflow that are likely to continue after this pandemic subsides

Political transition and emergent forest-conservation issues in Myanmar.

Political and economic transitions have had substantial impacts on forest conservation. Where transitions are underway or anticipated, historical precedent and methods for systematically assessing future trends should be used to anticipate likely threats to forest conservation and design appropriate and prescient policy measures to counteract them. Myanmar is transitioning from an authoritarian, centralized state with a highly regulated economy to a more decentralized and economically liberal democracy and is working to end a long-running civil war. With these transitions in mind, we used a horizon-scanning approach to assess the 40 emerging issues most affecting Myanmar's forests, including internal conflict, land-tenure insecurity, large-scale agricultural development, demise of state timber enterprises, shortfalls in government revenue and capacity, and opening of new deforestation frontiers with new roads, mines, and hydroelectric dams. Averting these threats will require, for example, overhauling governance models, building capacity, improving infrastructure- and energy-project planning, and reforming land-tenure and environmental-protection laws. Although challenges to conservation in Myanmar are daunting, the political transition offers an opportunity for conservationists and researchers to help shape a future that enhances Myanmar's social, economic, and environmental potential while learning and applying lessons from other countries. Our approach and results are relevant to other countries undergoing similar transitions
