Automatic enumeration of regular objects
We describe a framework for systematic enumeration of families combinatorial
structures which possess a certain regularity. More precisely, we describe how
to obtain the differential equations satisfied by their generating series.
These differential equations are then used to determine the initial counting
sequence and for asymptotic analysis. The key tool is the scalar product for
symmetric functions and that this operation preserves D-finiteness.Comment: Corrected for readability; To appear in the Journal of Integer

A new transfer-matrix algorithm for exact enumerations: Self-avoiding polygons on the square lattice
We present a new and more efficient implementation of transfer-matrix methods
for exact enumerations of lattice objects. The new method is illustrated by an
application to the enumeration of self-avoiding polygons on the square lattice.
A detailed comparison with the previous best algorithm shows significant
improvement in the running time of the algorithm. The new algorithm is used to
extend the enumeration of polygons to length 130 from the previous record of
110.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, IoP style file
Enumeration of Matchings: Problems and Progress
This document is built around a list of thirty-two problems in enumeration of
matchings, the first twenty of which were presented in a lecture at MSRI in the
fall of 1996. I begin with a capsule history of the topic of enumeration of
matchings. The twenty original problems, with commentary, comprise the bulk of
the article. I give an account of the progress that has been made on these
problems as of this writing, and include pointers to both the printed and
on-line literature; roughly half of the original twenty problems were solved by
participants in the MSRI Workshop on Combinatorics, their students, and others,
between 1996 and 1999. The article concludes with a dozen new open problems.

5-Chromatic Strongly Regular Graphs
In this paper, we begin the determination of all primitive strongly regular graphs with chromatic number equal to 5.Using eigenvalue techniques, we show that there are at most 43 possible parameter sets for such a graph. For each parameter set, we must decide which strongly regular graphs, if any, possessing the set are 5-chromatic.In this way, we deal completely with 34 of these parameter sets using eigenvalue techniques and computer enumerations.graphs;eigenvalues
Inflations of geometric grid classes of permutations
All three authors were partially supported by EPSRC via the grant EP/J006440/1.Geometric grid classes and the substitution decomposition have both been shown to be fundamental in the understanding of the structure of permutation classes. In particular, these are the two main tools in the recent classification of permutation classes of growth rate less than κ ≈ 2.20557 (a specific algebraic integer at which infinite antichains first appear). Using language- and order-theoretic methods, we prove that the substitution closures of geometric grid classes are well partially ordered, finitely based, and that all their subclasses have algebraic generating functions. We go on to show that the inflation of a geometric grid class by a strongly rational class is well partially ordered, and that all its subclasses have rational generating functions. This latter fact allows us to conclude that every permutation class with growth rate less than κ has a rational generating function. This bound is tight as there are permutation classes with growth rate κ which have nonrational generating functions.PostprintPeer reviewe
3nj Morphogenesis and Semiclassical Disentangling
Recoupling coefficients (3nj symbols) are unitary transformations between
binary coupled eigenstates of N=(n+1) mutually commuting SU(2) angular momentum
operators. They have been used in a variety of applications in spectroscopy,
quantum chemistry and nuclear physics and quite recently also in quantum
gravity and quantum computing. These coefficients, naturally associated to
cubic Yutsis graphs, share a number of intriguing combinatorial, algebraic, and
analytical features that make them fashinating objects to be studied on their
own. In this paper we develop a bottom--up, systematic procedure for the
generation of 3nj from 3(n-1)j diagrams by resorting to diagrammatical and
algebraic methods. We provide also a novel approach to the problem of
classifying various regimes of semiclassical expansions of 3nj coefficients
(asymptotic disentangling of 3nj diagrams) for n > 2 by means of combinatorial,
analytical and numerical tools
