This article explores the ongoing conflict over state forest land between the local population and the State Forestry Corporation (SFC) in a village in upland Central Java with regard to authority formation. It looks at how different agents draw on different sources of authority in the course of the conflict and its negotiations. The principal questions are to what kind of sources of authority villagers refer to and how the formation of authority informs the relations between the state and society in the land dispute. The article is based on 11 months of ethnographic fieldwork and focuses on the central figure of Pak Wahid who took a leading position in the forest land dispute and in mobilising peasants in the village. The article argues that in post-Suharto Java, leadership in the struggle for state forest land at the village level is embedded in the interaction of Javanese ideas of power and authority as well as administrative authority. Due to political and institutional reforms, new sources of authority could be invoked while there are no real changes in the power relations within the village or between the SFC and the villagers.

(Autorenreferat)"We developed a record-linkage toolbox in order to compare the performance of various string-similarity measures for German surnames. This 'Matching Tool-Box' (MTB) is made up by independent, highly portable JAVA-programs. MTB is currently used for prototyping pre-processing tools and the empirical comparison of string-similarity measures. Furthermore, MTB has been used successfully in sociological, economical and epidemiological research projects." (author's abstract

'Distorted gravity: The intensive and extensive margins of international trade' revisited ; an application to an intermediate Melitz model

    Get PDF
With the extension of the standard Melitz Model from Ahn et al. [2011], the important role of intermediaries in facilitating trade is now recognized. In this paper, we are going to expand Chaney's [2008] approach to an Intermediate Melitz Model. By researching if Chaney's results still apply for an Intermediate Melitz Model, main results of Chaney are confirmed for the direct export model, but this is not so for the indirect export mode. Here, the elasticity of substitution still dampens the extensive margins; however, whether the dampening effect on the extensive margin still dominates the magnifying effect on the intensive margin is ambiguous. Also, the elasticities of trade ows are no longer larger, but rather smaller than in the Krugman Model. All results are economically meaningful. --international trade,Intermediate Melitz Model, firm heterogeneity, elasticities of trade flows, extensive and intensive margins

Lack of pupils in German riding schools? A causal-analytical consideration of customer satisfaction in children and adolescents

Not only the horse as a living creature, but also equestrian sport, has a positive influence on the general upbringing and development of young people. Although equestrian sport still exerts a strong fascination, it is becoming more difficult to inspire young people to take part in this time-consuming and costly sport. It is not only the equestrian sport which is affected by this - the majority of sport clubs offering different types of sport have registered diminishing member numbers. Especially those riding schools which consider themselves as being service providers in equestrian sport are confronted with the challenge of binding children and adolescents to their school for a longer term, thereby enabling the schools to manage themselves sustainably. The present study has, therefore, investigated the various factors which influence customer satisfaction in riding schools and their significance by using a structural equation model. A survey of 203 children and adolescents was undertaken in five different German riding schools. Customer satisfaction was particularly influenced by the design of the riding lessons and the school horses. The influence of the riding instructor however, was more indirect (acting over the direct impact on the design of the lessons and the school'horses) than direct. One most noticeable aspect of the results is the strong influence of customer satisfaction on recommendation behaviour. --customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, riding schools,Partial Least Squares (PLS)

Java Sound als Plattform für die Entwicklung studiotauglicher Audioapplikationen

    Get PDF

Interdependencies between fossil fuel and renewable energy markets: the German biodiesel market

    Get PDF
With this paper, we provide the first quantitative investigation of vertical price transmission in the biodiesel supply chain in Germany with the focus on the developments during the food crisis and the impact of subsidized US biodiesel exports. With the strong promotion of the production and use of biodiesel during the first half of the past decade, the German biodiesel market became the largest national biodiesel market worldwide. This analysis utilizes prices of rapeseed oil, soya oil, biodiesel and crude oil over a sample period covering the rapid growth of the German demand in 2002 until its decline in 2009. The effects of both the market development and different policies on price transmission are analyzed in detail. Due to the numerous changes in the market, a regime-dependent Markov-switching vector error correction model is applied. The results indicate that regimes with differing error-correction behavior govern the transmission process among the various prices. Evidence was found for a strong impact of crude oil price on biodiesel prices, and of biodiesel prices on rapeseed oil prices. However, in both cases, the price adjustment behavior is found to be regime dependent, and the regime occurrence in both market segments shows similar patterns. In relation to crude oil a weak adjustment of biodiesel prices is found to be dominating in the phase of market expansion. This changed from 2007 on when stronger error-correction is found, reflected by a stronger role of the crude oil price developments. In the relationship of biodiesel to the vegetable oils, most of the growth period was dominated by a regime characterized by weak price adjustments. From 2007 on, past own price changes and past changes in soya oil prices had a strong impact particularly on rapeseed oil prices. The biodiesel price development was less important. Reasons for this are substantial changes in the market structure. The biodiesel market developed as an insulated market; biodiesel was mainly produced from rapeseed oil until 2006. Thereafter, biodiesel was increasingly used for blends and sales decreased during the food crisis when agricultural commodity prices rose sharply. At the same time, strong import competition arose from subsidized US B99. The superiority of rapeseed oil for biodiesel production diminished. The uncertainty prevailing in the market from 2007 onwards is reflected by frequent regime changes. --biodiesel,cointegration,nonlinear vector error correction model, regimedependent model,Markov-switching

Functional food consumption in Germany: A lifestyle segmentation study

    Get PDF
Due to increasing health consciousness among consumers, there is an ever‐growing demand for food and beverages with health‐improving components. Not only ‘light’ and low fat products are in demand, but increasingly so‐called well‐being products and food which can prevent certain diseases. The German market for functional food is still growing. But who are the German functional food consumers? In an online‐survey referring to the Food‐ Related Lifestyle by BRUNSØ and GRUNERT (1995) we tried to identify different groups of functional food buyers in Germany and to answer the following questions: If there are different consumer groups, how do they vary in their functional food consumption, their buying motives for functional food and their lifestyles? In conclusion, we have identified two different groups of functional food consumers in Germany: The “Health oriented functional food buyers” and the “Convenient functional food buyers” and give recommendations for marketing strategies. --functional food, cluster analysis, Food-Related Lifestyle
