    The Viability and Potential Consequences of IoT-Based Ransomware

    With the increased threat of ransomware and the substantial growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) market, there is significant motivation for attackers to carry out IoT-based ransomware campaigns. In this thesis, the viability of such malware is tested. As part of this work, various techniques that could be used by ransomware developers to attack commercial IoT devices were explored. First, methods that attackers could use to communicate with the victim were examined, such that a ransom note was able to be reliably sent to a victim. Next, the viability of using "bricking" as a method of ransom was evaluated, such that devices could be remotely disabled unless the victim makes a payment to the attacker. Research was then performed to ascertain whether it was possible to remotely gain persistence on IoT devices, which would improve the efficacy of existing ransomware methods, and provide opportunities for more advanced ransomware to be created. Finally, after successfully identifying a number of persistence techniques, the viability of privacy-invasion based ransomware was analysed. For each assessed technique, proofs of concept were developed. A range of devices -- with various intended purposes, such as routers, cameras and phones -- were used to test the viability of these proofs of concept. To test communication hijacking, devices' "channels of communication" -- such as web services and embedded screens -- were identified, then hijacked to display custom ransom notes. During the analysis of bricking-based ransomware, a working proof of concept was created, which was then able to remotely brick five IoT devices. After analysing the storage design of an assortment of IoT devices, six different persistence techniques were identified, which were then successfully tested on four devices, such that malicious filesystem modifications would be retained after the device was rebooted. When researching privacy-invasion based ransomware, several methods were created to extract information from data sources that can be commonly found on IoT devices, such as nearby WiFi signals, images from cameras, or audio from microphones. These were successfully implemented in a test environment such that ransomable data could be extracted, processed, and stored for later use to blackmail the victim. Overall, IoT-based ransomware has not only been shown to be viable but also highly damaging to both IoT devices and their users. While the use of IoT-ransomware is still very uncommon "in the wild", the techniques demonstrated within this work highlight an urgent need to improve the security of IoT devices to avoid the risk of IoT-based ransomware causing havoc in our society. Finally, during the development of these proofs of concept, a number of potential countermeasures were identified, which can be used to limit the effectiveness of the attacking techniques discovered in this PhD research

    On the Principles of Evaluation for Natural Language Generation

    Natural language processing is concerned with the ability of computers to understand natural language texts, which is, arguably, one of the major bottlenecks in the course of chasing the holy grail of general Artificial Intelligence. Given the unprecedented success of deep learning technology, the natural language processing community has been almost entirely in favor of practical applications with state-of-the-art systems emerging and competing for human-parity performance at an ever-increasing pace. For that reason, fair and adequate evaluation and comparison, responsible for ensuring trustworthy, reproducible and unbiased results, have fascinated the scientific community for long, not only in natural language but also in other fields. A popular example is the ISO-9126 evaluation standard for software products, which outlines a wide range of evaluation concerns, such as cost, reliability, scalability, security, and so forth. The European project EAGLES-1996, being the acclaimed extension to ISO-9126, depicted the fundamental principles specifically for evaluating natural language technologies, which underpins succeeding methodologies in the evaluation of natural language. Natural language processing encompasses an enormous range of applications, each with its own evaluation concerns, criteria and measures. This thesis cannot hope to be comprehensive but particularly addresses the evaluation in natural language generation (NLG), which touches on, arguably, one of the most human-like natural language applications. In this context, research on quantifying day-to-day progress with evaluation metrics lays the foundation of the fast-growing NLG community. However, previous works have failed to address high-quality metrics in multiple scenarios such as evaluating long texts and when human references are not available, and, more prominently, these studies are limited in scope, given the lack of a holistic view sketched for principled NLG evaluation. In this thesis, we aim for a holistic view of NLG evaluation from three complementary perspectives, driven by the evaluation principles in EAGLES-1996: (i) high-quality evaluation metrics, (ii) rigorous comparison of NLG systems for properly tracking the progress, and (iii) understanding evaluation metrics. To this end, we identify the current state of challenges derived from the inherent characteristics of these perspectives, and then present novel metrics, rigorous comparison approaches, and explainability techniques for metrics to address the identified issues. We hope that our work on evaluation metrics, system comparison and explainability for metrics inspires more research towards principled NLG evaluation, and contributes to the fair and adequate evaluation and comparison in natural language processing

    Deep Learning Enabled Semantic Communication Systems

    In the past decades, communications primarily focus on how to accurately and effectively transmit symbols (measured by bits) from the transmitter to the receiver. Recently, various new applications appear, such as autonomous transportation, consumer robotics, environmental monitoring, and tele-health. The interconnection of these applications will generate a staggering amount of data in the order of zetta-bytes and require massive connectivity over limited spectrum resources but with lower latency, which poses critical challenges to conventional communication systems. Semantic communication has been proposed to overcome the challenges by extracting the meanings of data and filtering out the useless, irrelevant, and unessential information, which is expected to be robust to terrible channel environments and reduce the size of transmitted data. While semantic communications have been proposed decades ago, their applications to the wireless communication scenario remain limited. Deep learning (DL) based neural networks can effectively extract semantic information and can be optimized in an end-to-end (E2E) manner. The inborn characteristics of DL are suitable for semantic communications, which motivates us to exploit DL-enabled semantic communication. Inspired by the above, this thesis focus on exploring the semantic communication theory and designing semantic communication systems. First, a basic DL based semantic communication system, named DeepSC, is proposed for text transmission. In addition, DL based multi-user semantic communication systems are investigated for transmitting single-modal data and multimodal data, respectively, in which intelligent tasks are performed at the receiver directly. Moreover, a semantic communication system with a memory module, named Mem-DeepSC, is designed to support both memoryless and memory intelligent tasks. Finally, a lite distributed semantic communication system based on DL, named L-DeepSC, is proposed with low complexity, where the data transmission from the Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices to the cloud/edge works at the semantic level to improve transmission efficiency. The proposed various DeepSC systems can achieve less data transmission to reduce the transmission latency, lower complexity to fit capacity-constrained devices, higher robustness to multi-user interference and channel noise, and better performance to perform various intelligent tasks compared to the conventional communication systems

    Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle Fruit Picking with Perceptual Imitation Learning Trajectory Generation

    This thesis studies the problem of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) path planning and manipulation in unmapped environments. This thesis the specific task of orange picking with a quadrotor UAV. Robotic fruit harvesting is a fitting example problem to tackle in this research, as there is a worldwide need for improved agricultural technologies. This task is difficult because it requires comprehending and navigating a complex, unknown environment. To accomplish this task, we present a novel visual servoing controller which fuses information from onboard camera images with odometry data. This was used to calculate the relative position of an orange and a safe approach angle. By following a series of reference trajectories to the computed goal location, the system was able to grasp an orange autonomously and remove it from the tree. This visual servoing method has several inherent limitations. It cannot search for an occluded orange or handle any paths that remove the orange from its view. To improve upon this approach, and correct these shortcomings, we develop a novel neural network architecture to perform the same task using a learned implicit visual encoding. In the next section, we present the design of a simulation of this same orange picking task, and a Model Predictive Control (MPC) method for computing optimal trajectories within it. We trained the neural network to imitate the MPC expert, validating the network structure and cost function. In the subsequent chapter, we trained the same architecture on a dataset derived from the visual servoing controller. These experiments led to useful innovations in the neural network architecture, but even with these efforts, no network was able to vastly improve on the baseline data. In the final chapter, we discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of these algorithms. Each has areas where it exceeds the others, and we propose new avenues of research to improve them all

    Learning disentangled speech representations

    A variety of informational factors are contained within the speech signal and a single short recording of speech reveals much more than the spoken words. The best method to extract and represent informational factors from the speech signal ultimately depends on which informational factors are desired and how they will be used. In addition, sometimes methods will capture more than one informational factor at the same time such as speaker identity, spoken content, and speaker prosody. The goal of this dissertation is to explore different ways to deconstruct the speech signal into abstract representations that can be learned and later reused in various speech technology tasks. This task of deconstructing, also known as disentanglement, is a form of distributed representation learning. As a general approach to disentanglement, there are some guiding principles that elaborate what a learned representation should contain as well as how it should function. In particular, learned representations should contain all of the requisite information in a more compact manner, be interpretable, remove nuisance factors of irrelevant information, be useful in downstream tasks, and independent of the task at hand. The learned representations should also be able to answer counter-factual questions. In some cases, learned speech representations can be re-assembled in different ways according to the requirements of downstream applications. For example, in a voice conversion task, the speech content is retained while the speaker identity is changed. And in a content-privacy task, some targeted content may be concealed without affecting how surrounding words sound. While there is no single-best method to disentangle all types of factors, some end-to-end approaches demonstrate a promising degree of generalization to diverse speech tasks. This thesis explores a variety of use-cases for disentangled representations including phone recognition, speaker diarization, linguistic code-switching, voice conversion, and content-based privacy masking. Speech representations can also be utilised for automatically assessing the quality and authenticity of speech, such as automatic MOS ratings or detecting deep fakes. The meaning of the term "disentanglement" is not well defined in previous work, and it has acquired several meanings depending on the domain (e.g. image vs. speech). Sometimes the term "disentanglement" is used interchangeably with the term "factorization". This thesis proposes that disentanglement of speech is distinct, and offers a viewpoint of disentanglement that can be considered both theoretically and practically

    Image classification over unknown and anomalous domains

    A longstanding goal in computer vision research is to develop methods that are simultaneously applicable to a broad range of prediction problems. In contrast to this, models often perform best when they are specialized to some task or data type. This thesis investigates the challenges of learning models that generalize well over multiple unknown or anomalous modes and domains in data, and presents new solutions for learning robustly in this setting. Initial investigations focus on normalization for distributions that contain multiple sources (e.g. images in different styles like cartoons or photos). Experiments demonstrate the extent to which existing modules, batch normalization in particular, struggle with such heterogeneous data, and a new solution is proposed that can better handle data from multiple visual modes, using differing sample statistics for each. While ideas to counter the overspecialization of models have been formulated in sub-disciplines of transfer learning, e.g. multi-domain and multi-task learning, these usually rely on the existence of meta information, such as task or domain labels. Relaxing this assumption gives rise to a new transfer learning setting, called latent domain learning in this thesis, in which training and inference are carried out over data from multiple visual domains, without domain-level annotations. Customized solutions are required for this, as the performance of standard models degrades: a new data augmentation technique that interpolates between latent domains in an unsupervised way is presented, alongside a dedicated module that sparsely accounts for hidden domains in data, without requiring domain labels to do so. In addition, the thesis studies the problem of classifying previously unseen or anomalous modes in data, a fundamental problem in one-class learning, and anomaly detection in particular. While recent ideas have been focused on developing self-supervised solutions for the one-class setting, in this thesis new methods based on transfer learning are formulated. Extensive experimental evidence demonstrates that a transfer-based perspective benefits new problems that have recently been proposed in anomaly detection literature, in particular challenging semantic detection tasks

    Predictive Maintenance of Critical Equipment for Liquefied Natural Gas Liquefaction Process Meeting global energy demand is a massive challenge, especially with the quest of more affinity towards sustainable and cleaner energy. Natural gas is viewed as a bridge fuel to a renewable energy. LNG as a processed form of natural gas is the fastest growing and cleanest form of fossil fuel. Recently, the unprecedented increased in LNG demand, pushes its exploration and processing into offshore as Floating LNG (FLNG). The offshore topsides gas processes and liquefaction has been identified as one of the great challenges of FLNG. Maintaining topside liquefaction process asset such as gas turbine is critical to profitability and reliability, availability of the process facilities. With the setbacks of widely used reactive and preventive time-based maintenances approaches, to meet the optimal reliability and availability requirements of oil and gas operators, this thesis presents a framework driven by AI-based learning approaches for predictive maintenance. The framework is aimed at leveraging the value of condition-based maintenance to minimises the failures and downtimes of critical FLNG equipment (Aeroderivative gas turbine). In this study, gas turbine thermodynamics were introduced, as well as some factors affecting gas turbine modelling. Some important considerations whilst modelling gas turbine system such as modelling objectives, modelling methods, as well as approaches in modelling gas turbines were investigated. These give basis and mathematical background to develop a gas turbine simulated model. The behaviour of simple cycle HDGT was simulated using thermodynamic laws and operational data based on Rowen model. Simulink model is created using experimental data based on Rowen’s model, which is aimed at exploring transient behaviour of an industrial gas turbine. The results show the capability of Simulink model in capture nonlinear dynamics of the gas turbine system, although constraint to be applied for further condition monitoring studies, due to lack of some suitable relevant correlated features required by the model. AI-based models were found to perform well in predicting gas turbines failures. These capabilities were investigated by this thesis and validated using an experimental data obtained from gas turbine engine facility. The dynamic behaviours gas turbines changes when exposed to different varieties of fuel. A diagnostics-based AI models were developed to diagnose different gas turbine engine’s failures associated with exposure to various types of fuels. The capabilities of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique have been harnessed to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset and extract good features for the diagnostics model development. Signal processing-based (time-domain, frequency domain, time-frequency domain) techniques have also been used as feature extraction tools, and significantly added more correlations to the dataset and influences the prediction results obtained. Signal processing played a vital role in extracting good features for the diagnostic models when compared PCA. The overall results obtained from both PCA, and signal processing-based models demonstrated the capabilities of neural network-based models in predicting gas turbine’s failures. Further, deep learning-based LSTM model have been developed, which extract features from the time series dataset directly, and hence does not require any feature extraction tool. The LSTM model achieved the highest performance and prediction accuracy, compared to both PCA-based and signal processing-based the models. In summary, it is concluded from this thesis that despite some challenges related to gas turbines Simulink Model for not being integrated fully for gas turbine condition monitoring studies, yet data-driven models have proven strong potentials and excellent performances on gas turbine’s CBM diagnostics. The models developed in this thesis can be used for design and manufacturing purposes on gas turbines applied to FLNG, especially on condition monitoring and fault detection of gas turbines. The result obtained would provide valuable understanding and helpful guidance for researchers and practitioners to implement robust predictive maintenance models that will enhance the reliability and availability of FLNG critical equipment.Petroleum Technology Development Funds (PTDF) Nigeri
