Relationship based Entity Recommendation System
With the increase in usage of the internet as a place to search for information, the importance of the level of relevance of the results returned by search engines have increased by many folds in recent years. In this paper, we propose techniques to improve the relevance of results shown by a search engine, by using the kinds of relationships between entities a user is interested in. We propose a technique that uses relationships between entities to recommend related entities from a knowledge base which is a collection of entities and the relationships with which they are connected to other entities. These relationships depict more real world relationships between entities, rather than just simple “is-a” or “has-a” relationships. The system keeps track of relationships on which user is clicking and uses this click count as a preference indicator to recommend future entities. This approach is very useful in modern day semantic web searches for recommending entities of user’s interests
Recommendations for the representation of hierarchical objects in Europeana
The issue of handling hierarchical objects has been always an important topic for Europeana’s network of projects and Data Providers. The implementation of solutions in the Europeana portal has been delayed for a long time mainly due to the fact that complex objects required the development of new functionalities that could not be supported by the Europeana Semantic Elements (ESE) model. Indeed the simplicity and the flatness of this model prevented Data Providers from supplying complex objects

Entity Personalized Talent Search Models with Tree Interaction Features
Talent Search systems aim to recommend potential candidates who are a good
match to the hiring needs of a recruiter expressed in terms of the recruiter's
search query or job posting. Past work in this domain has focused on linear and
nonlinear models which lack preference personalization in the user-level due to
being trained only with globally collected recruiter activity data. In this
paper, we propose an entity-personalized Talent Search model which utilizes a
combination of generalized linear mixed (GLMix) models and gradient boosted
decision tree (GBDT) models, and provides personalized talent recommendations
using nonlinear tree interaction features generated by the GBDT. We also
present the offline and online system architecture for the productionization of
this hybrid model approach in our Talent Search systems. Finally, we provide
offline and online experiment results benchmarking our entity-personalized
model with tree interaction features, which demonstrate significant
improvements in our precision metrics compared to globally trained

On Suggesting Entities as Web Search Queries
The Web of Data is growing in popularity and dimension,
and named entity exploitation is gaining importance in many research
fields. In this paper, we explore the use of entities that can be extracted
from a query log to enhance query recommendation. In particular, we
extend a state-of-the-art recommendation algorithm to take into account
the semantic information associated with submitted queries. Our novel
method generates highly related and diversified suggestions that we as-
sess by means of a new evaluation technique. The manually annotated
dataset used for performance comparisons has been made available to
the research community to favor the repeatability of experiments
Towards Question-based Recommender Systems
Conversational and question-based recommender systems have gained increasing
attention in recent years, with users enabled to converse with the system and
better control recommendations. Nevertheless, research in the field is still
limited, compared to traditional recommender systems. In this work, we propose
a novel Question-based recommendation method, Qrec, to assist users to find
items interactively, by answering automatically constructed and algorithmically
chosen questions. Previous conversational recommender systems ask users to
express their preferences over items or item facets. Our model, instead, asks
users to express their preferences over descriptive item features. The model is
first trained offline by a novel matrix factorization algorithm, and then
iteratively updates the user and item latent factors online by a closed-form
solution based on the user answers. Meanwhile, our model infers the underlying
user belief and preferences over items to learn an optimal question-asking
strategy by using Generalized Binary Search, so as to ask a sequence of
questions to the user. Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed
matrix factorization model outperforms the traditional Probabilistic Matrix
Factorization model. Further, our proposed Qrec model can greatly improve the
performance of state-of-the-art baselines, and it is also effective in the case
of cold-start user and item recommendations.Comment: accepted by SIGIR 202
A Topic Recommender for Journalists
The way in which people acquire information on events and form their own
opinion on them has changed dramatically with the advent of social media. For many
readers, the news gathered from online sources become an opportunity to share points
of view and information within micro-blogging platforms such as Twitter, mainly
aimed at satisfying their communication needs. Furthermore, the need to deepen the
aspects related to news stimulates a demand for additional information which is often
met through online encyclopedias, such as Wikipedia. This behaviour has also
influenced the way in which journalists write their articles, requiring a careful assessment
of what actually interests the readers. The goal of this paper is to present
a recommender system, What to Write and Why, capable of suggesting to a journalist,
for a given event, the aspects still uncovered in news articles on which the
readers focus their interest. The basic idea is to characterize an event according to
the echo it receives in online news sources and associate it with the corresponding
readers’ communicative and informative patterns, detected through the analysis of
Twitter and Wikipedia, respectively. Our methodology temporally aligns the results
of this analysis and recommends the concepts that emerge as topics of interest from
Twitter and Wikipedia, either not covered or poorly covered in the published news
articles
