Learning to Run challenge solutions: Adapting reinforcement learning methods for neuromusculoskeletal environments
In the NIPS 2017 Learning to Run challenge, participants were tasked with
building a controller for a musculoskeletal model to make it run as fast as
possible through an obstacle course. Top participants were invited to describe
their algorithms. In this work, we present eight solutions that used deep
reinforcement learning approaches, based on algorithms such as Deep
Deterministic Policy Gradient, Proximal Policy Optimization, and Trust Region
Policy Optimization. Many solutions use similar relaxations and heuristics,
such as reward shaping, frame skipping, discretization of the action space,
symmetry, and policy blending. However, each of the eight teams implemented

Two-Stream RNN/CNN for Action Recognition in 3D Videos
The recognition of actions from video sequences has many applications in
health monitoring, assisted living, surveillance, and smart homes. Despite
advances in sensing, in particular related to 3D video, the methodologies to
process the data are still subject to research. We demonstrate superior results
by a system which combines recurrent neural networks with convolutional neural
networks in a voting approach. The gated-recurrent-unit-based neural networks
are particularly well-suited to distinguish actions based on long-term
information from optical tracking data; the 3D-CNNs focus more on detailed,
recent information from video data. The resulting features are merged in an SVM
which then classifies the movement. In this architecture, our method improves

Deep Learning on Lie Groups for Skeleton-based Action Recognition
In recent years, skeleton-based action recognition has become a popular 3D
classification problem. State-of-the-art methods typically first represent each
motion sequence as a high-dimensional trajectory on a Lie group with an
additional dynamic time warping, and then shallowly learn favorable Lie group
features. In this paper we incorporate the Lie group structure into a deep
network architecture to learn more appropriate Lie group features for 3D action
recognition. Within the network structure, we design rotation mapping layers to
transform the input Lie group features into desirable ones, which are aligned
better in the temporal domain. To reduce the high feature dimensionality, the
architecture is equipped with rotation pooling layers for the elements on the
Lie group. Furthermore, we propose a logarithm mapping layer to map the
resulting manifold data into a tangent space that facilitates the application
of regular output layers for the final classification. Evaluations of the
proposed network for standard 3D human action recognition datasets clearly
demonstrate its superiority over existing shallow Lie group feature learning
