    Mapping changes in spatial cognition of public spaces at NOVA University Lisbon (Campolide Campus) caused by COVID-19 restrictions, using GIS and perception

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial TechnologiesThe global pandemic produced by COVID-19 has caused many changes that not only concern public health, moreover, is producing social effects that show differences in the perception and construction of spatial cognition that modify the way people live public spaces. To study these modifications, the thesis analyzes the changes in the perception and spatial cognition in public spaces at NOVA University Lisbon bringing a different focus and knowledge that can be used to understand how the pandemic crisis is affecting the social relationships in these public spaces. In order to gather information that allows to demonstrate the main perception of participants, a survey was developed, including three fundamental sections. One focus on before pandemic restrictions where there was no limitation or concerns about the contagion of the virus, a second one after pandemic restrictions where different health restrictions have been applied and have produced effects in the way people interact to each other in the public spaces. A third section tries to collect information about the perception of restrictions implemented in the study area. The survey was shared online with different students, professors and staff. The collected information was composed by drawn polygons and questions that participants answered related to the public spaces at the study area like the cafeteria, canteen, natural areas, benches, study rooms, library, offices and corridors. Results were analyzed showing the two main sections. The main analysis carried out was the survey data analysis, overlapping analysis, spatial distribution by sociodemographic characteristics, hotspot analysis and cluster analysis. Results show what were the changes and differences in the frequency and use of public spaces before and after pandemic restrictions

    This book collects some of the works presented at ATEE Florence Spring Conference 2020-2021. The Conference, originally planned for May 2020, was forcefully postponed due to the dramatic insurgence of the pandemic. Despite the difficulties in this period, the Organising Committee decided anyway to keep it, although online and more than one year later, not to disperse the huge work of authors, mainly teachers, who had to face one of the hardest challenges in the last decades, in a historic period where the promotion of social justice and equal opportunities – through digital technologies and beyond – is a key factor for democratic citizenship in our societies. The Organising Committee, the University of Florence, and ATEE wish to warmly thank all the authors for their commitment and understanding, which ensured the success of the Conference. We hope this book could be, not only a witness of these pandemic times, but a hopeful sign for an equal and inclusive education in all countries

    Patient centric intervention for children with high functioning autism spectrum disorder. Can ICT solutions improve the state of the art ?

    In my PhD research we developed an integrated technological platform for the acquisition of neurophysiologic signals in a semi-naturalistic setting where children are free to move around, play with different objects and interact with the examiner. The interaction with the examiner rather than with a screen is another very important feature of the present research, and allows recreating a more real situation with social interactions and cues. In this paradigm, we can assume that the signals acquired from the brain and the autonomic system, are much more similar to what is generated while the child interacts in common life situations. This setting, with a relatively simple technical implementation, can be considered as one step towards a more behaviorally driven analysis of neurophysiologic activity. Within the context of a pilot open trial, we showed the feasibility of the technological platform applied to the classical intervention solutions for the autism. We found that (1) the platform was useful during both children-therapist interaction at hospital as well as children-parents interaction at home, (2) tailored intervention was compatible with at home use and non-professional therapist/parents. Going back to the title of my thesis: 'Can ICT solution improve the state-of-the-art ?' the answer could be: 'Yes it can be an useful support for a skilled professional in the field of autis

    An environment, or any building product or service in it, should ideally be designed to meet the needs of all those who wish to use it. Universal Design is the design and composition of environments, products, and services so that they can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people, regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. It creates products, services and environments that meet people’s needs. In short, Universal Design is good design. This book presents the proceedings of UD2022, the 6th International Conference on Universal Design, held from 7 - 9 September 2022 in Brescia, Italy.The conference is targeted at professionals and academics interested in the theme of universal design as related to the built environment and the wellbeing of users, but also covers mobility and urban environments, knowledge, and information transfer, bringing together research knowledge and best practice from all over the world. The book contains 72 papers from 13 countries, grouped into 8 sections and covering topics including the design of inclusive natural environments and urban spaces, communities, neighborhoods and cities; housing; healthcare; mobility and transport systems; and universally- designed learning environments, work places, cultural and recreational spaces. One section is devoted to universal design and cultural heritage, which had a particular focus at this edition of the conference.
