Mobile heritage practices. Implications for scholarly research, user experience design, and evaluation methods using mobile apps.
Mobile heritage apps have become one of the most popular means for audience
engagement and curation of museum collections and heritage contexts. This
raises practical and ethical questions for both researchers and practitioners, such
as: what kind of audience engagement can be built using mobile apps? what are
the current approaches? how can audience engagement with these experience
be evaluated? how can those experiences be made more resilient, and in turn
sustainable? In this thesis I explore experience design scholarships together with
personal professional insights to analyse digital heritage practices with a view to
accelerating thinking about and critique of mobile apps in particular. As a result,
the chapters that follow here look at the evolution of digital heritage practices,
examining the cultural, societal, and technological contexts in which mobile
heritage apps are developed by the creative media industry, the academic
institutions, and how these forces are shaping the user experience design
methods. Drawing from studies in digital (critical) heritage, Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI), and design thinking, this thesis provides a critical analysis of
the development and use of mobile practices for the heritage. Furthermore,
through an empirical and embedded approach to research, the thesis also
presents auto-ethnographic case studies in order to show evidence that mobile
experiences conceptualised by more organic design approaches, can result in
more resilient and sustainable heritage practices. By doing so, this thesis
encourages a renewed understanding of the pivotal role of these practices in the
broader sociocultural, political and environmental changes.AHRC REAC
Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law
This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI. Exploring the Impact of Augmented Reality on Customer Experiences and Attitudes: A Comparative Analysis with Websites
Augmented Reality is used by various customers’ concerned companies to augment their stimuli, shopping experiences, and customers’ purchasing behavior. Hence, AR driven enabling stimulates customer engagement and their shopping attitude by providing a vivid technology experience. Prior studies found that AR novelty, trust, and vividness influenced the customer usage attitude. There have extant literature presented in the context of AR applications, it is widely used through numerous gadgets but the author intends to explore holistic features that tend to grasp customers’ experiences and attitudes to find the variance between AR vs. Websites. AR potentially disrupted the real-world environment by providing hedonic visual benefits and eliminating the physical efforts that tend to stimulate customers who mesmerize with AR compared to a website. The author chose the Houzz AR app and its website to gather data and provide a better understanding of both scenarios. The author conducted two-field experiments to illustrate positive customer attitudes that satisfied their experience towards the AR app rather than the traditional website. AR app is vivid and novel to engage a customer and moderate their attitude towards the technology immersion. Finally, this study provides multiple implications such as unique visual illustrations, sensational features, and innovation resulting in satisfied customer experience, considering both features in real and virtual world environments
A philosophical discussion of the implications and limitations of using Virtual Reality Technology (VR) as an “Empathy Machine”
This thesis engages in a philosophical discussion on “empathy”, “virtuality”, and the use of
virtual reality (VR) technology as an “empathy machine”. Here, I define empathy as the
intentional activity (or skill) of recreating aspects of another subject’s emotional experience in
one’s imagination to reflectively and “experientially” understand what another is feeling. As
opposed to isomorphically appropriating another’s feelings to oneself, I identify empathy as
third-personally “feeling with” others. After exploring the narrow and pluralistic approaches
to understanding empathy, I argue that there are compelling pragmatic reasons for adopting the
pluralistic approach, the proponents of which prefer to highlight varieties of empathy instead
of a sole conceptualisation of “empathy proper”. As for virtuality, I subscribe to a third view
that can be located between “virtual realism” and “virtual irrealism”, in that I understand
virtuality as a sui generis mode of technological actualisation, where psychophysiological
illusions, of virtual presence and embodiment, coexist with veridical elements, such as virtual
social objects, without causing a defect in users’ rational judgment. My main contention in this
research is that VR’s multisensory affordances can be instrumentally utilised as a
complementary extension (but never as a replacement) for offsetting some of the limitations in
attaining interpersonal empathy through imaginative perspective-taking alone. After discussing
this contention in more depth, I then attempt to address some of the recurrent challenges and
criticism raised against VR’s use as an empathy machine. Finally, I highlight some of the
limitations in VR technology’s capability to capture and transmit a full representation of others’
lived experiences

Policy options for food system transformation in Africa and the role of science, technology and innovation
As recognized by the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa – 2024 (STISA-2024), science, technology and innovation (STI) offer many opportunities for addressing the main constraints to embracing transformation in Africa, while important lessons can be learned from successful interventions, including policy and institutional innovations, from those African countries that have already made significant progress towards food system transformation. This chapter identifies opportunities for African countries and the region to take proactive steps to harness the potential of the food and agriculture sector so as to ensure future food and nutrition security by applying STI solutions and by drawing on transformational policy and institutional innovations across the continent. Potential game-changing solutions and innovations for food system transformation serving people and ecology apply to (a) raising production efficiency and restoring and sustainably managing degraded resources; (b) finding innovation in the storage, processing and packaging of foods; (c) improving human nutrition and health; (d) addressing equity and vulnerability at the community and ecosystem levels; and (e) establishing preparedness and accountability systems. To be effective in these areas will require institutional coordination; clear, food safety and health-conscious regulatory environments; greater and timely access to information; and transparent monitoring and accountability systems
