Enhancing security in ROS
In recent years, we observed a growth of cybersecurity threats, especially due to the ubiquitous of connected and autonomous devices commonly defined as Internet of Things (IoT). These devices, designed to handle basic operations, commonly lacks security measurements. In this paper we want to tackle how we could, by design, apply static and dynamic security solutions for those devices and define security measurements without degrading overall the performance
Potential of abiotic stress resistance in plants induced by melatonin
Biotechnology is a perfect way to
improve crop production by enhancing its
capacity to be resistant to abiotic stress. Abiotic
stresses have a detrimental effect on crop
plants which contribute to plant efficiency and
productivity declines. All of the abiotic stresses
induce an enhanced development of reactive
oxygen species (ROS). Specific abiotic stresses
hinder the growth of plants by various pathways
but both because ROS rates rise and conflict
with homeostasis of ROS. Melatonin can
improve the economy by improving crop
production and raising the possibility of abiotic
stress management. It shows the different roles
of melatonin in a plant system, which can be
helpful in enhancing environmentally friendly
crop development and maintaining nutritional
security that can impact social life. Another
crucially significant factor is the development of
melatonin-rich food crops such as rice, fruits
and vegetables by mixing conventional and
modern breeding approaches. This method is
an improvement in plant tolerance to biotic and
abiotic stress that can lead to improved crop
yields, and the nutritional added benefit of
foods for solving food safety problems
Experiences on a motivational learning approach for robotics in undergraduate courses
This paper presents an educational experience carried out in robotics undergraduate courses from two
different degrees: Computer Science and Industrial Engineering, having students with diverse
capabilities and motivations. The experience compares two learning strategies for the practical
lessons of such courses: one relies on code snippets in Matlab to cope with typical robotic problems
like robot motion, localization, and mapping, while the second strategy opts for using the ROS
framework for the development of algorithms facing a competitive challenge, e.g. exploration
algorithms. The obtained students’ opinions were instructive, reporting, for example, that although they
consider harder to master ROS when compared to Matlab, it might be more useful in their (robotic
related) professional careers, which enhanced their disposition to study it. They also considered that
the challenge-exercises, in addition to motivate them, helped to develop their skills as engineers to a
greater extent than the skeleton-code based ones. These and other conclusions will be useful in

Protective wrapping of off-the-shelf components
System designers using off-the-shelf components (OTSCs), whose internals they cannot change, often use add-on “wrappers” to adapt the OTSCs’ behaviour as required. In most cases, wrappers are used to change “functional” properties of the components they wrap. In this paper we discuss instead protective wrapping, the use of wrappers to improve the dependability – i.e., “non-functional” properties like availability, reliability, security, and/or safety – of a component and thus of a system. Wrappers can improve dependability by adding fault tolerance, e.g. graceful degradation, or error recovery mechanisms. We discuss the rational specification of such protective wrappers in view of system dependability requirements, and highlight some of the design trade-offs and uncertainties that affect system design with OTSCs and wrappers, and that differentiate it from other forms of fault-tolerant design
UAV/UGV Autonomous Cooperation: UAV Assists UGV to Climb a Cliff by Attaching a Tether
This paper proposes a novel cooperative system for an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
(UAV) and an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) which utilizes the UAV not only as a
flying sensor but also as a tether attachment device. Two robots are connected
with a tether, allowing the UAV to anchor the tether to a structure located at
the top of a steep terrain, impossible to reach for UGVs. Thus, enhancing the
poor traversability of the UGV by not only providing a wider range of scanning
and mapping from the air, but also by allowing the UGV to climb steep terrains
with the winding of the tether. In addition, we present an autonomous framework
for the collaborative navigation and tether attachment in an unknown
environment. The UAV employs visual inertial navigation with 3D voxel mapping
and obstacle avoidance planning. The UGV makes use of the voxel map and
generates an elevation map to execute path planning based on a traversability
analysis. Furthermore, we compared the pros and cons of possible methods for
the tether anchoring from multiple points of view. To increase the probability
of successful anchoring, we evaluated the anchoring strategy with an
experiment. Finally, the feasibility and capability of our proposed system were
demonstrated by an autonomous mission experiment in the field with an obstacle

Market Design for Generation Adequacy: Healing Causes rather than Symptoms
Keywords JEL Classification This paper argues that electricity market reform – particularly the need for complementary mechanisms to remunerate capacity – need to be analysed in the light of the local regulatory and institutional environment. If there is a lack of investment, the priority should be to identify the roots of the problem. The lack of demand side response, short-term reliability management procedures and uncompetitive ancillary services procurement often undermine market reflective scarcity pricing and distort long-term investment incentives. The introduction of a capacity mechanism should come as an optional supplement to wholesale and ancillary markets improvements.
