    ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks: a literature review

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is a complex and vibrant process, one that involves a combination of technological and organizational interactions. Often an ERP implementation project is the single largest IT project that an organization has ever launched and requires a mutual fit of system and organization. Also the concept of an ERP implementation supporting business processes across many different departments is not a generic, rigid and uniform concept and depends on variety of factors. As a result, the issues addressing the ERP implementation process have been one of the major concerns in industry. Therefore ERP implementation receives attention from practitioners and scholars and both, business as well as academic literature is abundant and not always very conclusive or coherent. However, research on ERP systems so far has been mainly focused on diffusion, use and impact issues. Less attention has been given to the methods used during the configuration and the implementation of ERP systems, even though they are commonly used in practice, they still remain largely unexplored and undocumented in Information Systems research. So, the academic relevance of this research is the contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. An annotated brief literature review is done in order to evaluate the current state of the existing academic literature. The purpose is to present a systematic overview of relevant ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks as a desire for achieving a better taxonomy of ERP implementation methodologies. This paper is useful to researchers who are interested in ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Results will serve as an input for a classification of the existing ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Also, this paper aims also at the professional ERP community involved in the process of ERP implementation by promoting a better understanding of ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks, its variety and history

In this essay, we expand the view of organizational speed as a multidimensional gestalt-like construct that may influence firm performance and competitive advantage. We offer a capability-based definition of organizational speed and identify and review the building blocks of organizational speed. We propose new avenues and questions for future research based on our perspective

    An investigation of analytics and business intelligence applications in improving healthcare organization performance: a mixed methods research

    The healthcare ecosystem in the US is currently undergoing series of refinement and reformation due to the need to (i) improve quality of care and (ii) reduce cost. To achieve their key objective, healthcare organizations (HCOs) currently face a fundamental challenge: how to best use or optimize limited resources while providing better care and services to patients? The answer to this question might lie within HCO’s massive data and the ability to identify and apply appropriate analytics and business intelligence (A&BI) techniques and technologies to discern and extract relevant information and knowledge from that data. However, despite the increasing interest in the implementation and utilization of A&BI techniques and technologies by various organizations to improve operational efficiencies and financial performance, HCOs still lag behind other sectors in the adoption and use of A&BI capabilities. Motivated by the “data rich but information poor” syndrome currently facing HCOs, this dissertation applies a mixed method research–case study (interpretivist) and survey (positivist) – to investigate how healthcare organizations can leverage A&BI techniques and technologies to improve their overall performance. In achieving this objective, I illustrate an exemplar of how A&BI techniques and technologies can effectively be applied by specifically answering this high-level research question (RQ): How can A&BI techniques, methods, and technologies be developed and leveraged to improve performance in healthcare organizations? This high-level RQ has been broken down into four sub-questions that will be answered in two different studies in this dissertation. In the first study, I investigate what combination of A&BI techniques and technologies HCOs are currently applying to create value. This study was conducted by using content/literature analysis and case study methods in a large healthcare organization. The second study builds on the first study to investigate, using both interview and survey data, how A&BI capabilities can be developed, cultivated and nurtured as a core competency or capability that significantly helps improve healthcare organizations’ overall performance (such as cost reduction, quick access to providers and treatment, effective diagnostics, etc.). I found very novel and interesting results in both studies that not only address the research questions, but also provide significant theoretical and practical contributions. Major contributions of study 1 include: revising and remodeling of an outdated healthcare value chain (HCVC) framework that is more realistic and applicable to current care delivery practices in the healthcare industry and mapping of A&BI capabilities to the different domains of the revised HCVC framework. Study 2 provides theoretical contribution to the existing literature by conceptualizing and empirically validating A&BI capability as a third-order multi-dimension construct and its significant influence on performance

    Of Governance and the BPO Paradox: The Impact of Information Capabilities on Service Satisfaction

    The fundamental value premise of business process outsourcing (BPO) is greater process efficiency at reduced costs of ownership. However, recent studies suggest that BPO may add cost and friction, and require more management attention than originally envisioned to realize the benefits of outsourcing. Service dissatisfaction ensues, giving rise to a BPO paradox. This study focuses on the role of governance choice in resolving this emerging paradox. We build on the information processing view of the firm and theories of interfirm coordination to argue that the alignment between information requirements (IR) of the BPO relationship and information capabilities (IC) of the governance solution is central to service satisfaction. We use this conceptual model of fit to identify two aligned configurations of BPO governance, which reflect the end points of a continuum in decreasing order of IR and IC. These configurations are used to test hypotheses predicting alternative governance choices and the impact of these choices on service satisfaction. Our empirical analysis of survey data on 137 BPO relationships suggests that aligned BPO configurations are marked by higher levels of satisfaction than nonaligned relationships, and that underinvestment in IC has a marked negative impact on satisfaction relative to overinvestment. The findings enhance managerial understanding of governance choice in BPO, and underscore the normative implications of the alignment between IR of the BPO relationship and IC of the governance solution on service satisfaction and the BPO paradox

    Achieving digital-driven patient agility in the era of big data

    There is still a limited understanding of the necessary skill, talent, and expertise to manage digital technologies as a crucial enabler of the hospitals ability to adequately sense and respond to patient needs and wishes, i.e., patient agility. Therefore, this investigates how hospital departments can leverage a digital dy-namic capability to enable the departments patient agility. This study embraces the dynamic capabilities theory, develops a research model, and tests it accordingly using data from 90 clinical hospital departments from the Netherlands through an online survey. The model's hypothesized relationships are tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). The outcomes demonstrate the significance of digital dynamic capability in developing patient sensing and responding capabili-ties that, in turn, positively influence patient service performance.     Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse
