    Development of a Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Program (HELP) Online Website for Filipinos: A Case Report

    Background and Purpose: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a major public health problem in the Philippines and around the world. Preventive measures to reduce its continuous rise require improvement in the health system. Utilization of information and communication technology-(ICT)-based tools will allow dissemination of evidenced-based information in the population. This case report contains the description of the development process of a Web-based nutrition Website. Case Description: ICT-based tools were explored as means of communicating nutrition information to the public because of the increasing access and usage of the Internet among Filipinos. An iterative process with five major phases were followed in the development. Outcome: The Website HELP Online can be accessed through (http://i.fnri.dost.gov.ph/helponline). There is integration of two modules: one for the general public and the other for registered nutritionist dietitians (RND) of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI). The first module contained the nutrition counseling platform that connects and records all interactions of online and walk-in clients with their RNDs. The second module contained nutrition calculators, a health tracker, and nutrition education materials. Discussion: The developed HELP Online Website was used for online users to easily access nutrition information and services offered by Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-FNRI. The user-centered design focus in combination with a responsive Web platform resulted in improved user satisfaction. In terms of content, use of the current and accepted scientific information translated to simpler and easier messages were found to be more effective among the target group. Although many issues exist with the continuous use of ICT-based tools, the main purpose is to improve the delivery of evidence-based information to the public

    Intelligent nutrition in healthcare and continuous care

    In the healthcare industry, the patient's nutrition is a key factor in their treatment process. Every user has their own specific nutritional needs and requirements. An appropriate nutrition policy can therefore help the patient's recovery process and alleviate possible symptoms. Food recommender systems are platforms that offer personalised suggestions of recipes to users. However, there is a lack of usage of recipe recommendation systems in the healthcare sector. Multiple challenges in representing the domain of food and the patient's needs make it complicated to implement these systems. The present project aims to develop a platform for an intelligent planning of the user's meals, based on their clinical conditions. The application of machine learning algorithms on nutrition, in healthcare services and continuous care is thus a key topic of research. This platform will be tested and deployed at the Social Cafeteria of Vila Verde (Cantina Social da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Vila Verde). The development of this project will use the Design Science Research (DSR) investigation methodology, ensuring that the solution to the problem accomplishes all needs and requirements of the professionals, while elucidating new knowledge both for the institution and the scientific community.FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (UID/CEC/00319/2019

    Virtual Reality Simulation: An Innovative Teaching Tool for Dietetics Experiential Education

    This paper investigates the role of virtual reality and web technologies in the field of dietetics education. Within this frame, special emphasis is given on the building of web-based virtual learning environments so as to successfully fulfill their educational objectives. In particular, basic pedagogical methods are studied, focusing mainly on the efficient preparation, approach and presentation of learning content, and specific designing rules are presented considering the hypermedia, virtual and educational nature of this kind of applications. The paper also aims to highlight the educational benefits arising from the use of virtual reality technology in dietetics and study the emerging area of web-based dietetic simulations. Virtual reality simulation allows the visualization of data in three dimensions and provides interactive functionalities that reinforce the feeling of immersion into a computer-generated virtual world. Finally, the innovative virtual reality environment for dietetics education pedagogy and development is demonstrated

    Use of nonintrusive sensor-based information and communication technology for real-world evidence for clinical trials in dementia

    Cognitive function is an important end point of treatments in dementia clinical trials. Measuring cognitive function by standardized tests, however, is biased toward highly constrained environments (such as hospitals) in selected samples. Patient-powered real-world evidence using information and communication technology devices, including environmental and wearable sensors, may help to overcome these limitations. This position paper describes current and novel information and communication technology devices and algorithms to monitor behavior and function in people with prodromal and manifest stages of dementia continuously, and discusses clinical, technological, ethical, regulatory, and user-centered requirements for collecting real-world evidence in future randomized controlled trials. Challenges of data safety, quality, and privacy and regulatory requirements need to be addressed by future smart sensor technologies. When these requirements are satisfied, these technologies will provide access to truly user relevant outcomes and broader cohorts of participants than currently sampled in clinical trials

    Health Figures: An Open Source JavaScript Library for Health Data Visualization

    The way we look at data has a great impact on how we can understand it, particularly when the data is related to health and wellness. Due to the increased use of self-tracking devices and the ongoing shift towards preventive medicine, better understanding of our health data is an important part of improving the general welfare of the citizens. Electronic Health Records, self-tracking devices and mobile applications provide a rich variety of data but it often becomes difficult to understand. We implemented the hFigures library inspired on the hGraph visualization with additional improvements. The purpose of the library is to provide a visual representation of the evolution of health measurements in a complete and useful manner. We researched the usefulness and usability of the library by building an application for health data visualization in a health coaching program. We performed a user evaluation with Heuristic Evaluation, Controlled User Testing and Usability Questionnaires. In the Heuristics Evaluation the average response was 6.3 out of 7 points and the Cognitive Walkthrough done by usability experts indicated no design or mismatch errors. In the CSUQ usability test the system obtained an average score of 6.13 out of 7, and in the ASQ usability test the overall satisfaction score was 6.64 out of 7. We developed hFigures, an open source library for visualizing a complete, accurate and normalized graphical representation of health data. The idea is based on the concept of the hGraph but it provides additional key features, including a comparison of multiple health measurements over time. We conducted a usability evaluation of the library as a key component of an application for health and wellness monitoring.     Fuzzy Information Enrichment for Self-healing Recommendation Systems of COVID-19 Patient

    The global emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic does not yet have a registered drug. Many studies suggest strengthening the immune system in the human body as an alternative solution to treating Covid-19 before the discovery of drugs. This study reports on various types of potential treatments and factors associated with the immune response to the virus. The analysis shows that the effectiveness of the treatment depends on the current preferences of the Covid-19 patient. Therefore, this study aims to use crowdsourced fuzzy information enrichment through Self-healing Recommender Systems (ShRS) to provide recommendations for the best treatment therapy. It is hoped that the proper treatment therapy will cure the healing of Covid-19 patients who are self-isolating. To demonstrate the ShRS, an illustrative example was conducted. We used a crowdsourcing approach to generate treatment therapy recommendations in Bojonegoro, an area with a high number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia. Most contextual input parameters such as age category, physical condition, and nutritional status are fuzzy. Therefore, we perform ShRS in proposing fuzzy inference to compute a new score/rank with each treatment pooled in it. The purpose of this study is to build a more practical recommendation system because the use of website applications and gadgets can open up opportunities for the public to contribute to human care. This study proposes a system to uncover the best options for healing people infected with Covid-19. It can help health practitioners and the general public cope with self-healing during a pandemic as an alternative lifesaver
