Analog neural networks for real-time constrained optimization
Architectures and circuit techniques for implementing general piecewise constrained optimization problems using VLSI techniques are explored. Discrete-time analog techniques are considered due to their inherent accuracy, programmability, and reconfigurability. A general architecture for minimizing piecewise functions by using gradient schemes is introduced. Switched-capacitor (SC) building blocks featuring improved characteristics in terms of area occupation and operation speed are presented. The implementation of the architectures by using the newest switched-current techniques is discussed. The layout of a 3-μm CMOS SC prototype for a quadratic optimization problem with linear constraints is given
A STOCHASTIC SIMULATION-BASED HYBRID INTERVAL FUZZY PROGRAMMING APPROACH FOR OPTIMIZING THE TREATMENT OF RECOVERED OILY WATER
In this paper, a stochastic simulation-based hybrid interval fuzzy programming (SHIFP) approach
is developed to aid the decision-making process by solving fuzzy linear optimization problems.
Fuzzy set theory, probability theory, and interval analysis are integrated to take into account the
effect of imprecise information, subjective judgment, and variable environmental conditions. A
case study related to oily water treatment during offshore oil spill clean-up operations is conducted
to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. The results suggest that producing a
random sequence of triangular fuzzy numbers in a given interval is equivalent to a normal
distribution when using the centroid defuzzification method. It also shows that the defuzzified
optimal solutions follow the normal distribution and range from 3,000-3,700 tons, given the
budget constraint (CAD 110,000-150,000). The normality seems to be able to propagate
throughout the optimization process, yet this interesting finding deserves more in-depth study
and needs more rigorous mathematical proof to validate its applicability and feasibility. In
addition, the optimal decision variables can be categorized into several groups with different
probability such that decision makers can wisely allocate limited resources with higher
confidence in a short period of time. This study is expected to advise the industries and
authorities on how to distribute resources and maximize the treatment efficiency of oily
water in a short period of time, particularly in the context of harsh environments
A new exact closest lattice point search algorithm using linear constraints
The problem of finding the closest lattice point arises in several communications scenarios and is known to be NP-hard. We propose a new closest lattice point search algorithm which utilizes a set of new linear inequality constraints to reduce the search of the closest lattice point to the intersection of a polyhedron and a sphere. This set of linear constraints efficiently leverage the geometric structure of the lattice to reduce considerably the number of points that must be visited. Simulation results verify that this algorithm offers substantial computational savings over standard sphere decoding when the dimension of the problem is large
Portfolio selection problems in practice: a comparison between linear and quadratic optimization models
Several portfolio selection models take into account practical limitations on
the number of assets to include and on their weights in the portfolio. We
present here a study of the Limited Asset Markowitz (LAM), of the Limited Asset
Mean Absolute Deviation (LAMAD) and of the Limited Asset Conditional
Value-at-Risk (LACVaR) models, where the assets are limited with the
introduction of quantity and cardinality constraints. We propose a completely
new approach for solving the LAM model, based on reformulation as a Standard
Quadratic Program and on some recent theoretical results. With this approach we
obtain optimal solutions both for some well-known financial data sets used by
several other authors, and for some unsolved large size portfolio problems. We
also test our method on five new data sets involving real-world capital market
indices from major stock markets. Our computational experience shows that,
rather unexpectedly, it is easier to solve the quadratic LAM model with our
algorithm, than to solve the linear LACVaR and LAMAD models with CPLEX, one of
the best commercial codes for mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems.
Finally, on the new data sets we have also compared, using out-of-sample
analysis, the performance of the portfolios obtained by the Limited Asset
models with the performance provided by the unconstrained models and with that
of the official capital market indices
A Better Alternative to Piecewise Linear Time Series Segmentation
Time series are difficult to monitor, summarize and predict. Segmentation
organizes time series into few intervals having uniform characteristics
(flatness, linearity, modality, monotonicity and so on). For scalability, we
require fast linear time algorithms. The popular piecewise linear model can
determine where the data goes up or down and at what rate. Unfortunately, when
the data does not follow a linear model, the computation of the local slope
creates overfitting. We propose an adaptive time series model where the
polynomial degree of each interval vary (constant, linear and so on). Given a
number of regressors, the cost of each interval is its polynomial degree:
constant intervals cost 1 regressor, linear intervals cost 2 regressors, and so
on. Our goal is to minimize the Euclidean (l_2) error for a given model
complexity. Experimentally, we investigate the model where intervals can be
either constant or linear. Over synthetic random walks, historical stock market
prices, and electrocardiograms, the adaptive model provides a more accurate
segmentation than the piecewise linear model without increasing the
cross-validation error or the running time, while providing a richer vocabulary
to applications. Implementation issues, such as numerical stability and
real-world performance, are discussed.Comment: to appear in SIAM Data Mining 200
