    Mobile robot tank with GPU assistance

    Robotic research has been costly and tremendously time consuming; this is due to the cost of sensors, motors, computational unit, physical construction, and fabrication. There are also a lot of man hours clocked in for algorithm design, software development, debugging and optimizing. Robotic vision input usually consists of 2 or more color cameras to construct a 3D virtual space. Additional cameras can also be added to enrich the detailed virtual 3D environment, however, the computational complexity increases when more cameras are added. This is due to not only the additional processing power that is required running the software but also the complexity of stitching multiple cameras together to form a sensor. Another method of creating the 3D virtual space is the utilization of range finder sensors. These types of sensors are usually relatively expensive and still require complex algorithms for calibration and correlation to real life distances. Sensing of a robot position can be facilitated by the addition of accelerometers and gyroscope sensors. A significant robotic design is robot interaction. One type of interaction is through verbal exchange. Such interaction requires an audio input receiver and transmitter on the robot. In order to achieve acceptable recognitions, different types of audio receivers may be implemented and many receivers are required to be deployed. Depending on the environment, noise cancellation hardware and software may be needed to enhance the verbal interaction performance. In this thesis different audio sensors are evaluated and implemented with Microsoft Speech Platform. Any robotic research requires a proper control algorithm and logic process. As a result, the majority of these control algorithms rely heavily on mathematics. High performance computational processing power is needed to process all the raw data in real-time. However, any high performance computation proportionally consumes more energy, so to conserve battery life on the robot, many robotic researchers implement remote computation by processing the raw data remotely. This implementation has one major drawback: in order to transmit raw data remotely, a robust communication infrastructure is needed. Without a robust communication the robot will suffers in failures due to the sheer amount of raw data in communication. I am proposing a solution to the computation problem by harvesting the General Purpose Graphic Processing Unit (GPU)’s computational power for complex mathematical raw data processing. This approach utilizes many-cores parallelism for multithreading real-time computation with a minimum of 10x the computational flops of traditional Central Processing Unit (CPU). By shifting the computation on the GPU the entire computation will be done locally on the robot itself to eliminate the need of any external communication system for remote data processing. While the GPU is used to perform image processing for the robot, the CPU is allowed to dedicate all of its processing power to run the other functions of the robot. Computer vision has been an interesting topic for a while; it utilizes complex mathematical techniques and algorithms in an attempt to achieve image processing in real-time. Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV) is a library consisting of pre-programed image processing functions for several different languages, developed by Intel. This library greatly reduces the amount of development time. Microsoft Kinect for XBOX has all the sensors mentioned above in a single convenient package with first party SDK for software development. I perform the robotic implementation utilizing Microsoft Kinect for XBOX as the primary sensor, OpenCV for image processing functions and NVidia GPU to off-load complex mathematical raw data processing for the robot. This thesis’s objective is to develop and implement a low cost autonomous robot tank with Microsoft Kinect for XBOX as the primary sensor, a custom onboard Small Form Factor (SFF) High Performance Computer (HPC) with NVidia GPU assistance for the primary computation, and OpenCV library for image processing functions

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2020As a practical pursuit of quantified uniqueness, biometrics explores the parameters that make us who we are and provides the tools we need to secure the integrity of that identity. In our culture of constant connectivity, an increasing reliance on biometrically secured mobile devices is transforming them into a target for bad actors. While no system will ever prevent all forms of intrusion, even state of the art biometric methods remain vulnerable to spoof attacks. As these attacks become more sophisticated, ocular motion based presentation attack detection (PAD) methods provide a potential deterrent. This dissertation presents the methods and evaluation of a novel optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) based PAD system for mobile device applications which leverages phase-locked temporal features of a unique reflexive behavioral response. Background is provided for historical and literary context of eye motion and ocular tracking to provide context to the objectives and accomplishments of this work. An evaluation of the improved methods for sample processing and sequential stability is provided with highlights for the presented improvements to the stability of convolutional facial landmark localization, and automated spatiotemporal feature extraction and classification models.     A volume filtering and rendering system for an improved visual balance of feature preservation and noise suppression in medical imaging

    Preserving or enhancing salient features whilst effectively suppressing noise-derived artifacts and extraneous detail have been two consistent yet competing objectives in volumetric medical image processing. Illustrative techniques (and methods inspired by them) can help to enhance and, if desired, isolate the depiction of specific regions of interest whilst retaining overall context. However, highlighting or enhancing specific features can have the undesirable side-effect of highlighting noise. Second-derivative based methods can be employed effectively in both the rendering and volume filtering stages of a visualisation pipeline to enhance the depiction of feature detail whilst minimising noise-based artifacts. We develop a new 3D anisotropic-diffusion PDE for an improved balance of feature-retention and noise reduction; furthermore, we present a feature-enhancing visualisation pipeline that can be applied to multiple modalities and has been shown to be particularly effective in the context of 3D ultrasound

    This open access book was prepared as a Final Publication of the COST Action IC1406 “High-Performance Modelling and Simulation for Big Data Applications (cHiPSet)“ project. Long considered important pillars of the scientific method, Modelling and Simulation have evolved from traditional discrete numerical methods to complex data-intensive continuous analytical optimisations. Resolution, scale, and accuracy have become essential to predict and analyse natural and complex systems in science and engineering. When their level of abstraction raises to have a better discernment of the domain at hand, their representation gets increasingly demanding for computational and data resources. On the other hand, High Performance Computing typically entails the effective use of parallel and distributed processing units coupled with efficient storage, communication and visualisation systems to underpin complex data-intensive applications in distinct scientific and technical domains. It is then arguably required to have a seamless interaction of High Performance Computing with Modelling and Simulation in order to store, compute, analyse, and visualise large data sets in science and engineering.     Edge Intelligence : Empowering Intelligence to the Edge of Network

    Edge intelligence refers to a set of connected systems and devices for data collection, caching, processing, and analysis proximity to where data are captured based on artificial intelligence. Edge intelligence aims at enhancing data processing and protects the privacy and security of the data and users. Although recently emerged, spanning the period from 2011 to now, this field of research has shown explosive growth over the past five years. In this article, we present a thorough and comprehensive survey of the literature surrounding edge intelligence. We first identify four fundamental components of edge intelligence, i.e., edge caching, edge training, edge inference, and edge offloading based on theoretical and practical results pertaining to proposed and deployed systems. We then aim for a systematic classification of the state of the solutions by examining research results and observations for each of the four components and present a taxonomy that includes practical problems, adopted techniques, and application goals. For each category, we elaborate, compare, and analyze the literature from the perspectives of adopted techniques, objectives, performance, advantages and drawbacks, and so on. This article provides a comprehensive survey of edge intelligence and its application areas. In addition, we summarize the development of the emerging research fields and the current state of the art and discuss the important open issues and possible theoretical and technical directions.Peer reviewe

    Computer-Assisted Interactive Documentary and Performance Arts in Illimitable Space

    This major component of the research described in this thesis is 3D computer graphics, specifically the realistic physics-based softbody simulation and haptic responsive environments. Minor components include advanced human-computer interaction environments, non-linear documentary storytelling, and theatre performance. The journey of this research has been unusual because it requires a researcher with solid knowledge and background in multiple disciplines; who also has to be creative and sensitive in order to combine the possible areas into a new research direction. [...] It focuses on the advanced computer graphics and emerges from experimental cinematic works and theatrical artistic practices. Some development content and installations are completed to prove and evaluate the described concepts and to be convincing. [...] To summarize, the resulting work involves not only artistic creativity, but solving or combining technological hurdles in motion tracking, pattern recognition, force feedback control, etc., with the available documentary footage on film, video, or images, and text via a variety of devices [....] and programming, and installing all the needed interfaces such that it all works in real-time. Thus, the contribution to the knowledge advancement is in solving these interfacing problems and the real-time aspects of the interaction that have uses in film industry, fashion industry, new age interactive theatre, computer games, and web-based technologies and services for entertainment and education. It also includes building up on this experience to integrate Kinect- and haptic-based interaction, artistic scenery rendering, and other forms of control.
