    Datacenter Traffic Control: Understanding Techniques and Trade-offs

    Datacenters provide cost-effective and flexible access to scalable compute and storage resources necessary for today's cloud computing needs. A typical datacenter is made up of thousands of servers connected with a large network and usually managed by one operator. To provide quality access to the variety of applications and services hosted on datacenters and maximize performance, it deems necessary to use datacenter networks effectively and efficiently. Datacenter traffic is often a mix of several classes with different priorities and requirements. This includes user-generated interactive traffic, traffic with deadlines, and long-running traffic. To this end, custom transport protocols and traffic management techniques have been developed to improve datacenter network performance. In this tutorial paper, we review the general architecture of datacenter networks, various topologies proposed for them, their traffic properties, general traffic control challenges in datacenters and general traffic control objectives. The purpose of this paper is to bring out the important characteristics of traffic control in datacenters and not to survey all existing solutions (as it is virtually impossible due to massive body of existing research). We hope to provide readers with a wide range of options and factors while considering a variety of traffic control mechanisms. We discuss various characteristics of datacenter traffic control including management schemes, transmission control, traffic shaping, prioritization, load balancing, multipathing, and traffic scheduling. Next, we point to several open challenges as well as new and interesting networking paradigms. At the end of this paper, we briefly review inter-datacenter networks that connect geographically dispersed datacenters which have been receiving increasing attention recently and pose interesting and novel research problems.Comment: Accepted for Publication in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial

    Reliable and Low-Latency Fronthaul for Tactile Internet Applications

    With the emergence of Cloud-RAN as one of the dominant architectural solutions for next-generation mobile networks, the reliability and latency on the fronthaul (FH) segment become critical performance metrics for applications such as the Tactile Internet. Ensuring FH performance is further complicated by the switch from point-to-point dedicated FH links to packet-based multi-hop FH networks. This change is largely justified by the fact that packet-based fronthauling allows the deployment of FH networks on the existing Ethernet infrastructure. This paper proposes to improve reliability and latency of packet-based fronthauling by means of multi-path diversity and erasure coding of the MAC frames transported by the FH network. Under a probabilistic model that assumes a single service, the average latency required to obtain reliable FH transport and the reliability-latency trade-off are first investigated. The analytical results are then validated and complemented by a numerical study that accounts for the coexistence of enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB) and Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency (URLLC) services in 5G networks by comparing orthogonal and non-orthogonal sharing of FH resources.Comment: 11pages, 13 figures, 3 bio photo

    Software Defined Networks based Smart Grid Communication: A Comprehensive Survey

    The current power grid is no longer a feasible solution due to ever-increasing user demand of electricity, old infrastructure, and reliability issues and thus require transformation to a better grid a.k.a., smart grid (SG). The key features that distinguish SG from the conventional electrical power grid are its capability to perform two-way communication, demand side management, and real time pricing. Despite all these advantages that SG will bring, there are certain issues which are specific to SG communication system. For instance, network management of current SG systems is complex, time consuming, and done manually. Moreover, SG communication (SGC) system is built on different vendor specific devices and protocols. Therefore, the current SG systems are not protocol independent, thus leading to interoperability issue. Software defined network (SDN) has been proposed to monitor and manage the communication networks globally. This article serves as a comprehensive survey on SDN-based SGC. In this article, we first discuss taxonomy of advantages of SDNbased SGC.We then discuss SDN-based SGC architectures, along with case studies. Our article provides an in-depth discussion on routing schemes for SDN-based SGC. We also provide detailed survey of security and privacy schemes applied to SDN-based SGC. We furthermore present challenges, open issues, and future research directions related to SDN-based SGC.Comment: Accepte

    The Road Ahead for Networking: A Survey on ICN-IP Coexistence Solutions

    In recent years, the current Internet has experienced an unexpected paradigm shift in the usage model, which has pushed researchers towards the design of the Information-Centric Networking (ICN) paradigm as a possible replacement of the existing architecture. Even though both Academia and Industry have investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of ICN, achieving the complete replacement of the Internet Protocol (IP) is a challenging task. Some research groups have already addressed the coexistence by designing their own architectures, but none of those is the final solution to move towards the future Internet considering the unaltered state of the networking. To design such architecture, the research community needs now a comprehensive overview of the existing solutions that have so far addressed the coexistence. The purpose of this paper is to reach this goal by providing the first comprehensive survey and classification of the coexistence architectures according to their features (i.e., deployment approach, deployment scenarios, addressed coexistence requirements and architecture or technology used) and evaluation parameters (i.e., challenges emerging during the deployment and the runtime behaviour of an architecture). We believe that this paper will finally fill the gap required for moving towards the design of the final coexistence architecture.Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, 3 table

    Simple and stable dynamic traffic engineering for provider scale ethernet

    Trabalho apresentado no âmbito do Mestrado em Engenharia Informática, como requisito parcial para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia InformáticaThe high speeds and decreasing costs of Ethernet solutions has motivated providers’ interest in using Ethernet as the link layer technology in their backbone and aggregation networks. Provider scale Ethernet offers further advantages, providing not only an easy to manage solution for multicast traffic, but also transparent interconnection between clients’ LANs. These Ethernet deployments face altogether different design issues, requiring support for a significantly higher number of hosts. This support relies on hierarquization, separating address and virtual network spaces of customers and providers. In addition, large scale Ethernet solutions need to grant forwarding optimality. This can be achieved using traffic engineering approaches. Traffic engineering defines the set of engineering methods and techniques used to optimize the flow of network traffic. Static traffic engineering approaches enjoy widespread use in provider networks, but their performance is greatly penalized by sudden load variations. On the other hand, dynamic traffic engineering is tailored to adapt to load changes. However, providers are skeptical to adopt dynamic approaches as these induce problems such as routing instability, and as a result, network performance decreases. This dissertation presents a Simple and Stable Dynamic Traffic Engineering framework (SSD-TE), which addresses these concerns in a provider scale Ethernet scenario. The validation results show that SSD-TE achieves better or equal performance to static traffic engineering approaches, whilst remaining both stable and responsive to load variations

    On energy consumption of switch-centric data center networks

    Data center network (DCN) is the core of cloud computing and accounts for 40% energy spend when compared to cooling system, power distribution and conversion of the whole data center (DC) facility. It is essential to reduce the energy consumption of DCN to esnure energy-efficient (green) data center can be achieved. An analysis of DC performance and efficiency emphasizing the effect of bandwidth provisioning and throughput on energy proportionality of two most common switch-centric DCN topologies: three-tier (3T) and fat tree (FT) based on the amount of actual energy that is turned into computing power are presented. Energy consumption of switch-centric DCNs by realistic simulations is analyzed using GreenCloud simulator. Power related metrics were derived and adapted for the information technology equipment (ITE) processes within the DCN. These metrics are acknowledged as subset of the major metrics of power usage effectiveness (PUE) and data center infrastructure efficiency (DCIE), known to DCs. This study suggests that despite in overall FT consumes more energy, it spends less energy for transmission of a single bit of information, outperforming 3T

The research paper represented here presents a splendid method for estimating or measuring Bandwidth in 1D468;1D485;1D489;1D490;1D484; network whose character is decentralized in nature. Contrasting in the centralized formation, the bandwidth estimating in 1D468;1D485;1D489;1D490;1D484; is significant and this eventually makes an influence over the 1D478;1D490;1D47A; of the network communication. The admission control and dynamic bandwidth management method which is presented here, facilitates it with fairness and rate guarantees despite the distributed link layer fair scheduling being absent. Alteration has been made over 1D474;1D468;1D46A; layer and this method is appropriate where the peer-to-peer (1D477;1D7D0;1D477;) multimedia transmissions rates are amended in compliantly fashion.In the research work presented here the architecture of the 1D474;1D468;1D46A; layer has been altered and the data handling capacity has been increased. This technique is adopted to facilitate higher data rate transmission and eliminate congestion over the considerednetwork. The proposed technique implements the splitting of 1D474;1D468;1D46A; into two sub layer where one will be responsible for control data transmission while other effectively transmits the data bits. Thus it results into higher data rate transmission with better accuracy and optimized network throughput.
