On the tradeoff between privacy and energy in wireless sensor networks

Source location privacy is becoming an increasingly important property of some wireless sensor network applica- tions. The fake source technique has been proposed as an approach for handling the source location privacy problem in these situations. However, whilst the efficiency of the fake source techniques is well documented, there are several factors that limit the usefulness of current results: (i) the assumption that fake sources are known a priori, (ii) the selection of fake sources based on an prohibitively expensive pre-configuration phase and (iii) the lack of a commonly adopted attacker model. In this paper we address these limitations by investigating the efficiency of the fake source technique with respect to possible implementations, configurations and extensions that do not require a pre-configuration phase or a priori knowledge of fake sources. The results presented demonstrate that one possible implementation, in presence of a single attacker, can lead to a decrease in capture ratio of up to 60% when compared with a flooding baseline. In the presence of multiple attackers, the same implementation yields only a 30% decrease in capture ratio with respect to the same baseline. To address this problem we investigate a hybrid technique, known as phantom routing with fake sources, which achieves a corresponding 50% reduction in capture ratio

Enhanced Cluster Based Routing Protocol for MANETS

Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) are a set of self organized wireless mobile nodes that works without any predefined infrastructure. For routing data in MANETs, the routing protocols relay on mobile wireless nodes. In general, any routing protocol performance suffers i) with resource constraints and ii) due to the mobility of the nodes. Due to existing routing challenges in MANETs clustering based protocols suffers frequently with cluster head failure problem, which degrades the cluster stability. This paper proposes, Enhanced CBRP, a schema to improve the cluster stability and in-turn improves the performance of traditional cluster based routing protocol (CBRP), by electing better cluster head using weighted clustering algorithm and considering some crucial routing challenges. Moreover, proposed protocol suggests a secondary cluster head for each cluster, to increase the stability of the cluster and implicitly the network infrastructure in case of sudden failure of cluster head.Comment: 6 page

Variable power broadcasting based on local information for source-dependent broadcasting protocols

    Get PDF
A typical broadcasting protocol for wireless network usually involves fixed transmission power that covers, for example an area within 250 meters (m). However, it is often unnecessary to broadcast using fixed power because a node that needs to be covered may just be 100m away. By reducing the transmission power enough to cover this node, energy expenditure would be reduced, thus, prolonging the lifetime of battery-powered wireless networks such as Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Existing source-dependent broadcasting protocols do not have any mechanisms for adjusting the transmission power of nodes. Therefore, this paper proposes some effective mechanisms based on local neighborhood knowledge, while ensuring the overall network is still covered. Results of extensive simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed protocols in reducing energy consumption. © 2011 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 2011 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), Cancun, Mexico, 28-31 March 2011. The mini conference “Optimisation of Mobile Communication Networks” focuses on advanced methods for search and optimisation applied to wireless communication networks. It is sponsored by Research & Enterprise Fund Southampton Solent University. The conference strives to widen knowledge on advanced search methods capable of optimisation of wireless communications networks. The aim is to provide a forum for exchange of recent knowledge, new ideas and trends in this progressive and challenging area. The conference will popularise new successful approaches on resolving hard tasks such as minimisation of transmit power, cooperative and optimal routing
