An optimized design modelling of PV integrated SEPIC-based four-switch inverter for sensorless PMBLDC motor control
The design of PV-based high gain SEPIC converter integrated with four-switch strategy, which has been used to achieve sensorless speed control of Permanent magnet Brushless DC motor (PMBLDC) is analysed in this work. Hence SEPIC converter coupled with Fuzzy Logic, MPPT Algorithm is employed to retain voltage. SEPIC converter is chosen as it has a continuous current operation with high gain; Fuzzy MPPT algorithm is used as it provides accurate results faster while the classical MPPT techniques provide the results with fluctuations in attaining the maximum power. Regarding the sensorless control of PMBLDC motor, the conventional six-switch strategy is replaced by four-switch strategy and the sensors are replaced by back EMF method. Four-switch strategy has the capability of reducing the losses, size, cost and complexity of control. For achieving the nominal speed, a closed-loop control is implemented with PI controller, which is tuned by GWO technique. The proposed methodology is more efficient as the motor speed remains unchanged even under the full load condition. The end result of traditional PI algorithm and PI algorithm, which have been tuned by GWO algorithm, is compared and simulated through MATLAB. This is also implemented and validated in hardware by FPGA Spartan 6E controller

High efficiency smart voltage regulating module for green mobile computing
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. In this thesis a design for a smart high efficiency voltage regulating module capable of supplying the core of modern microprocessors incorporating dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVS) capability is accomplished using a RISC based microcontroller to facilitate all the functions required to control, protect, and supply the core with the required variable operating voltage as set by the DVS management system. Normally voltage regulating modules provide maximum power efficiency at designed peak load, and the efficiency falls off as the load moves towards lesser values. A mathematical model has been derived for the main converter and small signal analysis has been performed in order to determine system operation stability and select a control scheme that would improve converter operation response to transients and not requiring intense computational power to realize. A Simulation model was built using Matlab/Simulink and after experimenting with tuned PID controller and fuzzy logic controllers, a simple fuzzy logic control scheme was selected to control the pulse width modulated converter and several methods were devised to reduce the requirements for computational power making the whole system operation realizable using a low power RISC based microcontroller. The same microcontroller provides circuit adaptations operation in addition to providing protection to load in terms of over voltage and over current protection. A novel circuit technique and operation control scheme enables the designed module to selectively change some of the circuit elements in the main pulse width modulated buck converter so as to improve efficiency over a wider range of loads. In case of very light loads as the case when the device goes into standby, sleep or hibernation mode, a secondary converter starts operating and the main converter stops. The secondary converter adapts a different operation scheme using switched capacitor technique which provides high efficiency at low load currents. A fuzzy logic control scheme was chosen for the main converter for its lighter computational power requirement promoting implementation using ultra low power embedded controllers. Passive and active components were carefully selected to augment operational efficiency. These aspects enabled the designed voltage regulating module to operate with efficiency improvement in off peak load region in the range of 3% to 5%. At low loads as the case when the computer system goes to standby or sleep mode, the efficiency improvent is better than 13% which will have noticeable contribution in extending battery run time thus contributing to lowering the carbon footprint of human consumption
Efficiency enhancement strategy implementation in hybrid electric vehicles using sliding mode control
Introduction. Hybrid electric vehicles are offering the most economically viable choices in today's automotive industry, providing best solutions for a very high fuel economy and low rate of emissions. The rapid progress and development of this industry has prompted progress of human beings from primitive level to a very high industrial society where mobility used to be a fundamental need. However, the use of large number of automobiles is causing serious damage to our environment and human life. At present most of the vehicles are relying on burning of hydrocarbons in order to achieve power of propulsion to drive wheels. Therefore, there is a need to employ clean and efficient vehicles like hybrid electric vehicles. Unfortunately, earlier control strategies of series hybrid electric vehicle fail to include load disturbances during the vehicle operation and some of the variations of the nonlinear parameters (e.g. stator’s leakage inductance, resistance of winding etc.). The novelty of the proposed work is based on designing and implementing two robust sliding mode controllers (SMCs) on series hybrid electric vehicle to improve efficiency in terms of both speed and torque respectively. The basic idea is to let the engine operate only when necessary keeping in view the state of charge of battery. Purpose. In proposed scheme, both performance of engine and generator is being controlled, one sliding mode controllers is controlling engine speed and the other one is controlling generator torque, and results are then compared using 1-SMC and 2-SMC’s. Method. The series hybrid electric vehicle powertrain considered in this work consists of a battery bank and an engine-generator set which is referred to as the auxiliary power unit, traction motor, and power electronic circuits to drive the generator and traction motor. The general strategy is based on the operation of the engine in its optimal efficiency region by considering the battery state of charge. Results .Mathematical models of engine and generator were taken into consideration in order to design sliding mode controllers both for engine speed and generator torque control. Vehicle was being tested on standard cycle. Results proved that, instead of using only one controller for engine speed, much better results are achieved by simultaneously using two sliding mode controllers, one controlling engine speed and other controlling generator torque.

Modelling and Performance Evaluation of ANFIS Controller-Based Bidirectional Power Management Scheme in Plug-in Electric Vehicles Integrated with Electric Grid
A bi-directional power exchange between the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) and the AC electrical grid is necessary to perform the Vehicle to Grid (V2G) and Grid to Vehicle (G2V) operations. While performing these operations, different power converters and controllers play an important role as mediators between the PEV and electric grid. Various works have demonstrated the utilization of controllers for PEV’s battery power management. However, the existing conventional controllers have technical shortcomings about vulnerability to controller gain, accurate mathematical modelling, poor adaptability, sluggish response to a sudden outburst and lengthy interval execution processing. Therefore, this paper develops an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) control strategy based bidirectional power management scheme to ensure the optimal electrical power flow exchange between the AC electrical grid and battery storage system in PEVs. This paper aims to reduce the stress on the grid power side and utilize the unused power properly. The performance of the ANFIS model is varied using two PEVs based on real-life power consumptions by different loads at home based on five operational modes. Besides, a comparative analysis between the ANFIS controller and the PI controller is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. The results illustrate that the proposed ANFIS controller delivers a smoother power injection from the PEV to the AC power grid with the least harmonics as well as achieves a smoother battery profile and less distortion when power is absorbed by PEV battery.publishedVersio
Dynamic maximum power point tracking and robust voltage regulation for photovoltaic systems
This research proposes a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and voltage regulation method
based on model reference adaptive control (MRAC). The MPPT algorithm which is presented in
this work is a modified perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm. The new algorithm prevents
oscillation around maximum power point (MPP) by approximating the peak of photovoltaic (PV)
array power curve. This goal is achieved by comparing the change in output power during each
cycle with change in array terminal power during the previous cycle. When array terminal power
decreases following an increase in the previous cycle or the opposite, a decrease in array terminal
power is followed by an increase, it means the power curve has reached its peak. Therefore, the
duty cycle of the boost converter should remain the same. When irradiance changes, the proposed
technique produces an MPPT algorithm's average efficiency ( MPPT ) of nearly 3.1 percent greater
than the conventional P&O and the Incremental conductance (InC) algorithm. In addition, under
strong partial shading conditions (PSC) and drift avoidance tests, the proposed technique produces
an average MPPT of nearly 9 percent and 8 percent greater than the conventional algorithms,
respectively. To inject the generated PV power into the grid with high quality, this work designs
voltage regulation controller based on MRAC to ensure the output voltage of the PV system is at
the desired level. To achieve this goal, we propose a DC–DC boost converter that stabilizes output
voltage variations by using MIT rule controllers. An output voltage is stabilized using two control
loops, PID controllers are capable of regulating output voltage at fixed levels, and for the outer
loop, it's intended to implement the direct model reference adaptive controller (DMRAC) MIT
rule. In comparison with DC–DC boost converters connected to the micro-grid (MG), the
controller presented here, manages disturbances and unknown parameter fluctuations more
effectively. The proposed controller and the model are tested in MATLAB/SIMULINK for load
disturbances. The load was changed by ~50% of its original value, and the worst-case settling time and maximum overshoot were less than ~0.1 s and 0.5 V (0.3%), respectively. Comparison with the PID methods, the lowest overshoot among three different PID tuning methods, namely the Ziegler–Nichol’s frequency-domain method, damped oscillation method, and Good Gain method, is 34%. Therefore, it is evident from results that the proposed algorithm has better performance in dealing with the maximum overshoot issues. The hardware validation is also carried out to show the performance of the proposed controller
H-GA-PSO Method for Tuning of a PID Controller for a Buck-Boost Converter Modeled with a New Method of Signal Flow Graph Technique
In this paper, a new method of signal flow graph technique and Mason's gain formula are applied for extracting the model and transfer functions from control to output and from input to output of a buck-boost converter. In order to investigate necessity of a controller for the converter with assumed parameters, the frequency and time domain analysis is done and the open loop system characteristics are verified. In addition, the needed closed loop controlled system specifications are determined. Moreover, designing a controller for the mentioned converter system based on the extracted model is discussed. For this purpose, a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is designed and the hybrid of genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), called H-GA-PSO method is used for tuning of the PID controller. Finally, the simulation results are used to show the performance of the proposed modeling and regulation methods
