The past few decade migration to wireless network from wired network has been a global trend. Wireless network made it possible in many applications to have mobility and scalability. Among all the modern wireless networks, Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) is one of the most important and unique applications. MANET is more popular now days. On the conflicting to traditional network architecture, MANET not has a fixed network infrastructure; every single node works as both a transmitter and a receiver. Nodes within same communication range are communicated directly with each other. Otherwise, they depend on their neighbors to relay messages. Because of the self-configuring ability of nodes in MANET made it popular among critical mission applications like military use or emergency recovery. Now days, security has become a very important service in Mobile Adhoc Network. As Compared with other networks, MANETs are more vulnerable to various types of attacks. This paper presents an overview of Secure Intrusion-Detection Systems for discovering malicious nodes and attacks on MANETs. Because of some special characteristics of MANETs, prevention mechanisms alone are not satisfied to manage the secure networks. In this, detection should be focused as another part before an attacker can damage the structure of the system. This paper gives an overall overview of IDS architecture for improving the security level of MANETs. For enhancing the security based on security attributes and then various algorithms like RSA and DSA

MANET (Mobile ad hoc network) is a collection of mobile nodes which dynamically self-organizes in erratic and transitory network topologies. Nodes in MANET can move autonomously in any direction and continuously changing the topology over the period. Each single node works evenly as a source and a recipient. MANET are more inclined towards security issues due to open medium and wide distribution of mobile nodes. It is vital to construct effective intrusion detection processes to preserve MANET from attacks. This paper introduces the various IDS schemes over MANETs, their pros and cons. This paper will be valuable to classify the suitable IDS scheme for a particular attack. DOI: 10.17762/ijritcc2321-8169.16048

A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY ON DETECTING BLACK HOLE ATTACK IN MOBILE AD-HOC NETWORK (MANET)

The infrastructure-less nature and mobility of nodes in mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) make it to be very susceptible to various attacks. Besides, owing to its flexibility and simplicity, there is no predefined time or permission set for nodes to leave or join the network and each node can act as a client or server.  Nevertheless, securing communication between nodes has become a challenging problem than in other types of network. Attacks in MANET range into different categories. Black hole attack is one of the attacks that has been addressed by many researchers in the recent years. It does occur when a harmful mobile node called black hole becomes a part of the network and tries to use its malicious behaviors by sending fake route reply packets (RREP) for any received route request packets (RREQ). When these faked packets arrive to the source node, it does reply to them by sending data packet via the established route. Once the packets are received by the black hole, it drops them before reaching the destination.  Hence, preventing the source node from reaching the intended destination. In this paper, we present an overview of a wide range of techniques suggested in the literature for detecting and preventing black hole attacks in mobile ad hoc network. Additionally, the effect of each approach on the network performance is also presented

An Effective Black Hole Attack Detection Mechanism using Permutation Based Acknowledgement in MANET

With the evolution of wireless technology and use of mobile devices, Mobile Ad-hoc Network has become popular among researchers to explore. A mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) is a self-configuring network of mobile routers (and associated hosts) connected by wireless links. The routers and hosts are free to move randomly and organize themselves arbitrarily. It allows mobile nodes to communicate directly without any centralized coordinator. Such network scenarios cannot rely on centralized and organized connectivity, and can be conceived as applications of Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks. Thus, MANET is vulnerable due to its dynamic network topology, as any node become untrusted at any time. The Black hole attack is one kind of security risk in which malicious node advertises itself to have a shortest path for any destination, to forge data or for DOS attack. In this paper, to detect such nodes effectively, we propose a Permutation based Acknowledgement for most widely used reactive protocol ad-hoc on demand distance vector routing AODV. This mechanism is enhancement of Adaptive Acknowledgement (AACK) and TWO-ACK, here we have tried to show the efficiency increment by decreasing number of messages routed in the network.Comment: MANET, Black Hole, Permutation, Security, Ad-hoc networ

Nowadays Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is an emerging area of research to provide various communication services to end users. Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are self-organizing wireless networks where nodes communicate with each other without a fixed infrastructure. Due to their unique characteristics, such as mobility, autonomy, and ad hoc connectivity, MANETs have become increasingly popular in various applications, including military, emergency response, and disaster management. However, the lack of infrastructure and dynamic topology of MANETs pose significant challenges to designing a secure and efficient routing protocol. This paper proposes an adaptive, secure, and efficient routing protocol that can enhance the performance of MANET. The proposed protocol incorporates various security mechanisms, including authentication, encryption, key management, and intrusion detection, to ensure secure routing. Additionally, the protocol considers energy consumption, network load, packet delivery fraction, route acquisition latency, packets dropped and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the applications to optimize network performance. Overall, the secure routing protocol for MANET should provide a reliable and secure communication environment that can adapt to the dynamic nature of the network. The protocol should ensure that messages are delivered securely and efficiently to the intended destination, while minimizing the risk of attacks and preserving the network resources Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protocol outperforms existing routing protocols in terms of network performance and security. The proposed protocol can facilitate the deployment of various applications in MANET while maintaining security and efficiency

A mobile ad-hoc network is a collection of mobile nodes connected together over a wireless medium without any fixed infrastructure. Unique characteristics of mobile ad-hoc networks such as open peer-to-peer network architecture, shared wireless medium and highly dynamic topology, pose various challenges to the security design. Mobile ad-hoc networks lack central administration or control, making them very vulnerable to attacks or disruption by faulty nodes in the absence of any security mechanisms. Also, the wireless channel in a mobile ad-hoc network is accessible to both legitimate network users and malicious attackers. So, the task of finding good solutions for these challenges plays a critical role in achieving the eventual success of mobile ad-hoc networks. However, the open medium and wide distribution of nodes make MANET vulnerable to malicious attackers. In this case, it is crucial to develop efficient intrusion-detection mechanisms to protect MANET from attacks. Secure routing protocols and mechanisms to detect routing misbehavior in the direct neighborhood exist; however, collusion of misbehaving nodes has not been adequately addressed yet.
