Economic incentives of large criminal profits and the threat of legal consequences have pushed criminals to continuously improve their malware, especially command and control channels. This thesis applied concepts from successful malware command and control to explore the survivability and resilience of benign configuration management systems. This work expands on existing stage models of malware life cycle to contribute a new model for identifying malware concepts applicable to benign configuration management. The Hidden Master architecture is a contribution to master-agent network communication. In the Hidden Master architecture, communication between master and agent is asynchronous and can operate trough intermediate nodes. This protects the master secret key, which gives full control of all computers participating in configuration management. Multiple improvements to idempotent configuration were proposed, including the definition of the minimal base resource dependency model, simplified resource revalidation and the use of imperative general purpose language for defining idempotent configuration. Following the constructive research approach, the improvements to configuration management were designed into two prototypes. This allowed validation in laboratory testing, in two case studies and in expert interviews. In laboratory testing, the Hidden Master prototype was more resilient than leading configuration management tools in high load and low memory conditions, and against packet loss and corruption. Only the research prototype was adaptable to a network without stable topology due to the asynchronous nature of the Hidden Master architecture. The main case study used the research prototype in a complex environment to deploy a multi-room, authenticated audiovisual system for a client of an organization deploying the configuration. The case studies indicated that imperative general purpose language can be used for idempotent configuration in real life, for defining new configurations in unexpected situations using the base resources, and abstracting those using standard language features; and that such a system seems easy to learn. Potential business benefits were identified and evaluated using individual semistructured expert interviews. Respondents agreed that the models and the Hidden Master architecture could reduce costs and risks, improve developer productivity and allow faster time-to-market. Protection of master secret keys and the reduced need for incident response were seen as key drivers for improved security. Low-cost geographic scaling and leveraging file serving capabilities of commodity servers were seen to improve scaling and resiliency. Respondents identified jurisdictional legal limitations to encryption and requirements for cloud operator auditing as factors potentially limiting the full use of some concepts

Adaptation of the human nervous system for self-aware secure mobile and IoT systems

IT systems have been deployed across several domains, such as hospitals and industries, for the management of information and operations. These systems will soon be ubiquitous in every field due to the transition towards the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT brings devices with sensory functions into IT systems through the process of internetworking. The sensory functions of IoT enable them to generate and process information automatically, either without human contribution or having the least human interaction possible aside from the information and operations management tasks. Security is crucial as it prevents system exploitation. Security has been employed after system implementation, and has rarely been considered as a part of the system. In this dissertation, a novel solution based on a biological approach is presented to embed security as an inalienable part of the system. The proposed solution, in the form of a prototype of the system, is based on the functions of the human nervous system (HNS) in protecting its host from the impacts caused by external or internal changes. The contributions of this work are the derivation of a new system architecture from HNS functionalities and experiments that prove the implementation feasibility and efficiency of the proposed HNS-based architecture through prototype development and evaluation. The first contribution of this work is the adaptation of human nervous system functions to propose a new architecture for IT systems security. The major organs and functions of the HNS are investigated and critical areas are identified for the adaptation process. Several individual system components with similar functions to the HNS are created and grouped to form individual subsystems. The relationship between these components is established in a similar way as in the HNS, resulting in a new system architecture that includes security as a core component. The adapted HNS-based system architecture is employed in two the experiments prove its implementation capability, enhancement of security, and overall system operations. The second contribution is the implementation of the proposed HNS-based security solution in the IoT test-bed. A temperature-monitoring application with an intrusion detection system (IDS) based on the proposed HNS architecture is implemented as part of the test-bed experiment. Contiki OS is used for implementation, and the 6LoWPAN stack is modified during the development process. The application, together with the IDS, has a brain subsystem (BrSS), a spinal cord subsystem (SCSS), and other functions similar to the HNS whose names are changed. The HNS functions are shared between an edge router and resource-constrained devices (RCDs) during implementation. The experiment is evaluated in both test-bed and simulation environments. Zolertia Z1 nodes are used to form a 6LoWPAN network, and an edge router is created by combining Pandaboard and Z1 node for a test-bed setup. Two networks with different numbers of sensor nodes are used as simulation environments in the Cooja simulator. The third contribution of this dissertation is the implementation of the proposed HNS-based architecture in the mobile platform. In this phase, the Android operating system (OS) is selected for experimentation, and the proposed HNS-based architecture is specifically tailored for Android. A context-based dynamically reconfigurable access control system (CoDRA) is developed based on the principles of the refined HNS architecture. CoDRA is implemented through customization of Android OS and evaluated under real-time usage conditions in test-bed environments. During the evaluation, the implemented prototype mimicked the nature of the HNS in securing the application under threat with negligible resource requirements and solved the problems in existing approaches by embedding security within the system. Furthermore, the results of the experiments highlighted the retention of HNS functions after refinement for different IT application areas, especially the IoT, due to its resource-constrained nature, and the implementable capability of our proposed HNS architecture.--- IT-järjestelmiä hyödynnetään tiedon ja toimintojen hallinnassa useilla aloilla, kuten sairaaloissa ja teollisuudessa. Siirtyminen kohti esineiden Internetiä (Internet of Things, IoT) tuo tällaiset laitteet yhä kiinteämmäksi osaksi jokapäiväistä elämää. IT-järjestelmiin liitettyjen IoT-laitteiden sensoritoiminnot mahdollistavat tiedon automaattisen havainnoinnin ja käsittelyn osana suurempaa järjestelmää jopa täysin ilman ihmisen myötävaikutusta, poislukien mahdolliset ylläpito- ja hallintatoimenpiteet. Turvallisuus on ratkaisevan tärkeää IT-järjestelmien luvattoman käytön estämiseksi. Näin luodaan arkkitehtuuri, jonka keskeisenä komponenttina on turvallisuus. Tämän pohjalta toteutetaan kaksi prototyyppijärjestelmää, joiden avulla arvioidaan arkkitehtuurin toteutuskelpoisuutta, turvallisuutta sekä toimintakykyä. Toinen kontribuutio on esitetyn hermostopohjaisen turvallisuusratkaisun toteuttaminen IoT-testialustalla. Kolmas tämän väitöskirjan kontribuutio on kehitetyn hermostopohjaisen arkkitehtuurin toteuttaminen mobiilialustassa. Toteutuksen alustaksi valitaan Android-käyttöjärjestelmä, ja kehitetty arkkitehtuuri räätälöidään Androidille. Tuloksena on kontekstipohjainen dynaamisesti uudelleen konfiguroitava pääsynvalvontajärjestelmä (context-based dynamically reconfigurable access control system, CoDRA).

Memory Safety Acceleration on RISC-V for C Programming Language

Memory corruption vulnerabilities can lead to memory attacks. Three of the top ten most dangerous weaknesses in computer security are memory-related. Memory attack is one of a computer system’s oldest but everlasting problems. Companies and the government lost billions of dollars due to memory security breaches. Memory safety is paramount to securing memory systems. Pointer-based memory safety protection has been shown as a promising solution covering both out-of-bounds and use-after-free errors. However, pointer-based memory safety relies on additional information (metadata) to check validity when a pointer is dereferenced. Such operations on the metadata introduce significant performance overhead to the system. Existing hardware/software implementations are primarily limited to proprietary closed-source microprocessors, simulation-only studies, or require changes to the input source code. In order to provide the need for memory security, we created a memory-safe RISC-V platform with low-performance overhead. In this thesis, a novel hardware/software co-design methodology consisting of a RISC-V based processor is extended with new instructions and microarchitecture enhancements, enabling complete memory safety in the C programming language and faster memory safety checks. Furthermore, a compiler is instrumented to provide security operations considering the changes to the processor. Moreover, a design exploration framework is proposed to provide an in-depth search for optimal hardware/software configuration for application-specific workloads regarding performance overhead, security coverage, area cost, and critical path latency. The entire system is realized by enhancing a RISC-V Rocket-chip system-on-chip (SoC). The resultant processor SoC is implemented on an FPGA and evaluated with applications from SPEC 2006 (for generic applications), MiBench (for embedded applications), and Olden benchmark suites for performance. The system, including the RISC-V CHISEL, compiler, profiling and analysis tool-chain, is fully available and open-source to the public

The purpose of this research is to analyze the security of next-generation big data processing (BDP) and examine the feasibility of applying advanced security features to meet the needs of modern multi-tenant, multi-level data analysis. The research methodology was to survey of the status of security mechanisms in BDP systems and identify areas that require further improvement. Access control (AC) security services were identified as priority area, specifically Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC). The exemplar BDP system analyzed is the Apache Hadoop ecosystem. We created data generation software, analysis programs, and posted the detailed the experiment configuration on GitHub. Overall, our research indicates that before a BDP system, such as Hadoop, can be used in operational environment significant security configurations are required. We believe that the tools are available to achieve a secure system, with ABAC, using Apache Ranger and Apache Atlas. However, these systems are immature and require verification by an independent third party. We identified the following specific actions for overall improvement: consistent provisioning of security services through a data analyst workstation, a common backplane of security services, and a management console. These areas are partially satisfied in the current Hadoop ecosystem, continued AC improvements through the open source community, and rigorous independent testing should further address remaining security challenges. Robust security will enable further use of distributed, cluster BDP, such as Apache Hadoop and Hadoop-like systems, to meet future government and business requirements

Software defined applications: a DevOps approach to monitoring

Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Informatics EngineeringDevOps presents a mix of agile methodologies that allow an application’s release cycle to be shortened. This translates into a faster delivery of value to the stakeholders. However, the value creation chain does not finish at the end of that cycle. It is necessary to monitor the artifacts produced at a system level, and at the application level, in order to ensure the compliance of the functional and non functional requirements. Today, there seems to be a clear separation between the monitoring process and the application development process. As the development and operations processes have merged in DevOps, this dissertation pretends to investigate how to integrate several aspects of monitoring into the regular lifecycle of an application’s development. The inclusion of external services further emphasizes the need to include an observability component into an infrastructure. The main goal of this dissertation is to develop a solution for the deployment of an infrastructure using stateof- the-art technologies and frameworks, while also providing observability to the system and to the applications running on it. To do so, it required the investigation of the methodologies and concepts that are the base of the software development lifecycle, focusing on the latter stages of that process: the deployment, and monitoring phases. These methodologies and concepts were complemented with the study of state-of-the-art technologies and frameworks that aim to ease the burden of setting up an infrastructure quickly and with the necessary tools to evolve it after the initial setup and with each new software release. Furthermore, it also involved the research of tools that enable the collection of metrics from applications, as well as processing such data and displaying it in useful ways for operators and stakeholders. In this context, this dissertation aims to provide a solution for the deployment of MobileID applications at INESC TEC, using the Mobile Driving Licence as the primary case study. The proposed design and implementation with a container orchestration framework and CI/CD pipelines, enables faster development of different MobileID applications, while also providing continuous monitoring to the deployments. With this implementation, it was possible to assess how container orchestration frameworks provide greater flexibility to applications, and how this observability can be augmented with the use of dedicated monitoring systems.
