    2kenize: Tying Subword Sequences for Chinese Script Conversion

    Simplified Chinese to Traditional Chinese character conversion is a common preprocessing step in Chinese NLP. Despite this, current approaches have poor performance because they do not take into account that a simplified Chinese character can correspond to multiple traditional characters. Here, we propose a model that can disambiguate between mappings and convert between the two scripts. The model is based on subword segmentation, two language models, as well as a method for mapping between subword sequences. We further construct benchmark datasets for topic classification and script conversion. Our proposed method outperforms previous Chinese Character conversion approaches by 6 points in accuracy. These results are further confirmed in a downstream application, where 2kenize is used to convert pretraining dataset for topic classification. An error analysis reveals that our method's particular strengths are in dealing with code-mixing and named entities.Comment: Accepted to ACL 202

    Designing, implementing, and evaluating an automated writing evaluation tool for improving EFL graduate students’ abstract writing: a case in Taiwan

    Writing English research article (RA) abstracts is a difficult but mandatory task for Taiwanese engineering graduate students (Feng, 2013). Understanding the current situation and needs of Taiwanese engineering graduate students, this dissertation aimed to develop and evaluate an automated writing evaluation (AWE) tool to assist their research article (RA) abstract writing in English by following a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach as the methodological framework. DBR was chosen because it strives to solve real-world problems through multiple iterations of development and building on results from each iteration to advance the project. Six design iterations were undertaken to develop and to evaluate the AWE tool in this dissertation, including (1) corpus compilation of engineering RAs, (2) genre analysis of engineering abstracts, (3) machine learning of move classification in abstracts, (4) analysis of lexical bundles used to express moves, (5) analysis of the choice of verb categories associated with moves, and finally, (6) AWE tool development based on previous findings, classroom implementation, and evaluation of the AWE tool following Chapelle’s (2001) computer-assisted language learning (CALL) framework. To begin with, I collected a corpus of 480 engineering RAs (Corpus-480) to extract appropriate linguistic properties as pedagogical materials to be implemented in the AWE tool. A sub-corpus (Corpus-72) was compiled with 72 RAs randomly chosen from Corpus-480 for manual and automated analyses. Next, to seek the best descriptive framework for the structure of engineering RA abstracts, two move schemata were compared: (1) IMRD (Introduction, Methodology, Results, and Discussion) and (2) CARS (Create-A-Research-Space, Swales, 1990). Abstracts in Corpus-72 were annotated and these two schemas were evaluated according to three quantitative metrics devised specifically for this comparison. Applying a statistical natural language processing (StatNLP) approach, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) was trained for automated move classification in abstracts. Formulaic language in engineering RA sections was used as linguistic features to automatically classify moves in abstracts. Additionally, four-word lexical bundles and verb categories were identified from Corpus-480 and Corpus-72, respectively. Four-word lexical bundles associated with moves in abstracts were extracted automatically. Additionally, verb categories (i.e., tense, aspect, and voice) in moves of abstracts were identified using CyWrite::Analyzer, a hybrid (statistical and rule-based) NLP software. Finally, the AWE tool was developed, based on the findings from the previous iterations, and implemented in an English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) classroom setting. Through analyzing students’ drafts before and after using the tool, and responses to a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview, the AWE tool was evaluated based on Chapelle’s (2001) CALL evaluation framework. The findings showed that students attempted to improve their abstracts by adding, deleting, or changing the sequences of their sentences, lexical bundles, and verb categories in their abstracts. Their attitudes toward the effectiveness and appropriateness of the tool were quite positive. Overall, the AWE tool drew students’ attention to the use of lexical bundles and verb categories to achieve the communicative purposes of each move in their abstracts. In conclusion, this dissertation started from Taiwanese engineering students’ needs to improve their English abstract writing, and attempted to develop and evaluate an AWE tool for assisting them. Following DBR, the findings from this dissertation are discussed to improve the next generation of the AWE tools. Having these iterations in place, future studies can focus on developing pedagogical materials from genre-based analysis in different disciplines to fulfill learners’ needs

    Structural review of relics tourism by text mining and machine learning

    Purpose: The objective of the paper is to find trends of research in relic tourism-related topics. Specifically, this paper uncovers all published studies having latent issues with the keywords "relic tourism" from the Web of Science database. Methods: A total of 109 published articles (2002-2021) were collected related to "relic tourism." Machine learning tools were applied. Network analysis was used to highlight top researchers in this field, their citations, keyword clusters, and collaborative networks. Text analysis and Bidirectional Encoder Representation from Transformer (BERT) of artificial intelligence model were used to predict text or keyword-based topic reference in machine learning. Results: All the papers are published basically on three primary keywords such as "!relics," "culture," and "heritage." Secondary keywords like "protection" and "development" also attract researchers to research this topic. The co-author network is highly significant for diverse authors, and geographically researchers from five countries are collaborating more on this topic. Implications: Academically, future research can be predicated with dense keywords. Journals can bring more special issues related to the topic as relic tourism still has some unexplored areas

    Knowledge Expansion of a Statistical Machine Translation System using Morphological Resources

    Translation capability of a Phrase-Based Statistical Machine Translation (PBSMT) system mostly depends on parallel data and phrases that are not present in the training data are not correctly translated. This paper describes a method that efficiently expands the existing knowledge of a PBSMT system without adding more parallel data but using external morphological resources. A set of new phrase associations is added to translation and reordering models; each of them corresponds to a morphological variation of the source/target/both phrases of an existing association. New associations are generated using a string similarity score based on morphosyntactic information. We tested our approach on En-Fr and Fr-En translations and results showed improvements of the performance in terms of automatic scores (BLEU and Meteor) and reduction of out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words.     Automated classification of text into predefined categories has always been considered as a vital method to manage and process a vast amount of documents in digital forms that are widespread and continuously increasing. This kind of web information, popularly known as the digital/electronic information is in the form of documents, conference material, publications, journals, editorials, web pages, e-mail etc. People largely access information from these online sources rather than being limited to archaic paper sources like books, magazines, newspapers etc. But the main problem is that this enormous information lacks organization which makes it difficult to manage. Text classification is recognized as one of the key techniques used for organizing such kind of digital data. In this paper we have studied the existing work in the area of text classification which will allow us to have a fair evaluation of the progress made in this field till date. We have investigated the papers to the best of our knowledge and have tried to summarize all existing information in a comprehensive and succinct manner. The studies have been summarized in a tabular form according to the publication year considering numerous key perspectives.     Building End-to-End Neural Machine Translation Systems for Crisis Scenarios: The Case of COVID-19

    Η Μηχανική Μετάφραση είναι ένα σημαντικό κομμάτι της Επεξεργασίας Φυσικής Γλώσσας, καθώς στοχεύει στην γρήγορη και αυτόματη μετάφραση διαφόρων ειδών κειμένων. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, η επικράτηση της Νευρωνικής Μηχανικής Μετάφρασης και η δημιουργία μεγάλων παράλληλων συλλογών κειμένων έχει οδηγήσει σε σημαντική βελτίωση της ποιότητας μετάφρασης. Ωστόσο, τα μεταφραστικά μοντέλα δεν είναι απαραιτήτως κατάλληλα για όλους τους τομείς κειμένων κι αυτό έχει οδηγήσει σε διάφορες έρευνες σχετικές με την προσαρμογή υπαρχόντων συστημάτων Μηχανικής Μετάφρασης σε διάφορους γνωστικούς τομείς κειμένων, δηλ. στο πώς να βελτιωθεί καλύτερα η ποιότητα μετάφρασης για μία συγκεκριμένη θεματική ή είδος κειμένων. Η Μηχανική Μετάφραση για Καταστάσεις Κρίσεων είναι μία ιδιαίτερη εφαρμογή της εξειδίκευσης συστημάτων σε θεματικούς τομείς, η οποία ασχολείται με την γρήγορη εξειδίκευση ενός υπάρχοντος συστήματος Μηχανικής Μετάφρασης για μία κατάσταση κρίσης, καθώς η ενσωμάτωση ενός τέτοιου συστήματος σε μία υποδομή ταχείας απόκρισης μπορεί να επιταχύνει την παροχή βοήθειας και την λήψη αποφάσεων. Η πανδημία του COVID-19 αποδείχτηκε μία κρίση μεγάλης διάρκειας και διεθνούς χαρακτήρα στην οποία παρουσιάστηκαν μεγάλα κενά στην διαφανή, έγκαιρη και αποτελεσματική επικοινωνία με το κοινό, ενώ σημαδεύτηκε από παραπληροφόρηση, θεωρίες συνομωσίας και σημαντικούς περιορισμούς στην ελευθερία του Τύπου. Περαιτέρω έρευνα στο πεδίο της Μηχανικής Μετάφρασης για Καταστάσεις Κρίσεων θα μπορούσε να συνδράμει σημαντικά στην αντιμετώπιση παρόμοιων μελλοντικών κρίσεων. Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία εστιάζει στην περίπτωση της πανδημίας του COVID-19 και στην μετάφραση αγγλικών κειμένων στα ελληνικά, ενώ επίσης κατασκευάζονται δύο εξειδικευμένα πολυγλωσσικά παράλληλα σώματα κειμένων. Το ένα σχετίζεται με τον COVID-19 και το άλλο προέρχεται από περιλήψεις ακαδημαϊκών εργασιών και διατριβών. Στην αρχή περιγράφουμε την διαδικασία συλλογής καινούριων παράλληλων σωμάτων κειμένων για συγκεκριμένους τομείς και την δημιουργία συνθετικών δεδομένων. Αυτά τα δεδομένα συνδυάζονται με υπάρχοντα παράλληλα δεδομένα ώστε να εξειδικεύσουν ένα υπάρχον σύστημα για τον COVID-19. Η διαδικασία αυτή περιλαμβάνει επίσης το φιλτράρισμα, την προεπεξεργασία και την επιλογή κατάλληλων δεδομένων, τα οποία παρουσιάζονται αναλυτικώς. Έπειτα, κάνουμε πειράματα πάνω σε διαφορετικές στρατηγικές εξειδίκευσης υπαρχόντων συστημάτων Μηχανικής Μετάφρασης για μία προσομοιωμένη κατάσταση κρίσης όπου τα σχετικά δεδομένα αυξάνονται με την πάροδο του χρόνου. Μας ενδιαφέρει επίσης το φαινόμενο “catastrophic forgetting” στο οποίο παρουσιάζεται μείωση της ποιότητας μετάφρασης σε κείμενα γενικού περιεχομένου. Τέλος, κατασκευάζουμε ένα ολοκληρωμένο σύστημα Νευρωνικής Μηχανικής Μετάφρασης το οποίο είναι εξειδικευμένο στην μετάφραση αγγλικών κειμένων σχετικά με τον COVID-19 στα ελληνικά. Αξιολογούμε διεξοδικά την απόδοσή του σε διαφορετικά είδη κειμένων ώστε να βρούμε τα δυνατά και αδύνατα σημεία του, κάνοντας χρήση οκτώ εξειδικευμένων δοκιμασιών (εκ των οποίων τα τέσσερα δημιουργήθηκαν για την παρούσα διπλωματική) και άλλων διαθέσιμων μοντέλων και υπηρεσιών μετάφρασης.Machine Translation is a crucial task of Natural Language Processing, as it aims to provide a fast and automatic way of translating various types of texts. In recent years, the emergence of Neural Machine Translation and the compilation of large-scale parallel corpora have led to significant improvements in translation quality. However, translation models are not necessarily suited for all domains and, thus, there has been significant research on domain adaptation of Neural Machine Translation Systems, i.e., on how to best improve the translation quality of an existing system for a specific topic or genre. Crisis Machine Translation is a special case of Domain Adaptation which is concerned with the rapid adaptation of an existing Machine Translation system for a crisis scenario, as the integration of such a system in a rapid response infrastructure can accelerate the speed of decision making and relief provision. The COVID-19 pandemic proved to be a prolonged and global crisis with large gaps in transparent, timely, and effective communication; it was also marked by misinformation, conspiracy theories, and significant restrictions on press freedom. Further research on Crisis Machine Translation could play an important role in better responding to future similar crises. In this thesis, we focus on the case of the COVID-19 pandemic and the English-Greek translation direction, while we also create two domain-specific multilingual parallel corpora; one which is related to COVID-19 and one which has been gathered from the abstracts of academic theses and dissertations. First, we describe the methodologies of acquiring new domain-specific parallel corpora and generating synthetic data which are combined with existing parallel data so as to adapt an existing system to the domain of COVID-19. This process includes data filtering, pre-processing, and selection pipelines, which are also described in detail. Afterwards, we conduct experiments on different fine-tuning strategies for a simulated crisis scenario in which varying amounts of related data become available as time progresses. We are also concerned with the phenomenon of “catastrophic forgetting”, i.e., the degradation of system performance on general texts. Lastly, we construct an end-to-end Neural Machine Translation system which is specialized in translating COVID-19 related English texts into Greek. In order to assess its performance across different domains and determine its strengths and weaknesses, we conduct an extended evaluation with eight test sets (half of them have been specifically created for this thesis) and other publicly available models and commercial translation services

    Twitter Analysis to Predict the Satisfaction of Saudi Telecommunication Companies’ Customers

    The flexibility in mobile communications allows customers to quickly switch from one service provider to another, making customer churn one of the most critical challenges for the data and voice telecommunication service industry. In 2019, the percentage of post-paid telecommunication customers in Saudi Arabia decreased; this represents a great deal of customer dissatisfaction and subsequent corporate fiscal losses. Many studies correlate customer satisfaction with customer churn. The Telecom companies have depended on historical customer data to measure customer churn. However, historical data does not reveal current customer satisfaction or future likeliness to switch between telecom companies. Current methods of analysing churn rates are inadequate and faced some issues, particularly in the Saudi market. This research was conducted to realize the relationship between customer satisfaction and customer churn and how to use social media mining to measure customer satisfaction and predict customer churn. This research conducted a systematic review to address the churn prediction models problems and their relation to Arabic Sentiment Analysis. The findings show that the current churn models lack integrating structural data frameworks with real-time analytics to target customers in real-time. In addition, the findings show that the specific issues in the existing churn prediction models in Saudi Arabia relate to the Arabic language itself, its complexity, and lack of resources. As a result, I have constructed the first gold standard corpus of Saudi tweets related to telecom companies, comprising 20,000 manually annotated tweets. It has been generated as a dialect sentiment lexicon extracted from a larger Twitter dataset collected by me to capture text characteristics in social media. I developed a new ASA prediction model for telecommunication that fills the detected gaps in the ASA literature and fits the telecommunication field. The proposed model proved its effectiveness for Arabic sentiment analysis and churn prediction. This is the first work using Twitter mining to predict potential customer loss (churn) in Saudi telecom companies, which has not been attempted before. Different fields, such as education, have different features, making applying the proposed model is interesting because it based on text-mining

    Computational approaches to semantic change (Volume 6)

    Semantic change — how the meanings of words change over time — has preoccupied scholars since well before modern linguistics emerged in the late 19th and early 20th century, ushering in a new methodological turn in the study of language change. Compared to changes in sound and grammar, semantic change is the least understood. Ever since, the study of semantic change has progressed steadily, accumulating a vast store of knowledge for over a century, encompassing many languages and language families. Historical linguists also early on realized the potential of computers as research tools, with papers at the very first international conferences in computational linguistics in the 1960s. Such computational studies still tended to be small-scale, method-oriented, and qualitative. However, recent years have witnessed a sea-change in this regard. Big-data empirical quantitative investigations are now coming to the forefront, enabled by enormous advances in storage capability and processing power. Diachronic corpora have grown beyond imagination, defying exploration by traditional manual qualitative methods, and language technology has become increasingly data-driven and semantics-oriented. These developments present a golden opportunity for the empirical study of semantic change over both long and short time spans

    An investigation of tense, aspect and other verb group features for English proficiency assessment on different Asian learner corpora

    Recent interest in second language acquisition has resulted in studying the relationship between linguistic indices and writing proficiency in English. This thesis investigates the influence of basic linguistic notions, introduced early in English grammar, on automatic proficiency evaluation tasks. We discuss the predictive potential of verb features (tense, aspect, voice, type and degree of em- bedding) and compare them to word level n-grams (unigrams, bigrams, trigrams) for proficiency assessment. We conducted four experiments using standard language corpora that differ in authors’ cultural backgrounds and essay topic variety. Tense showed little variation across proficiency lev- els or language of origin making it a bad predictor for our corpora, but tense and aspect showed promise, especially for more natural and varied datasets. Overall, our experiments illustrated that verb features, when examined individually, form a baseline for writing proficiency prediction. Feature combinations, however, perform better for these verb features, which are grammatically not independent. Finally, we investigate how language homogeneity due to corpus design influences the performance of our features. We find that the majority of the essays we examined use present tense, indefinite aspect and passive voice, thus greatly limiting the discriminative power of tense, aspect, and voice features. Thus linguistic features have to be tested for their interoperability together with their effectiveness on the corpora used. We conclude that all corpus-based research should include an early validation step that investigates feature independence, feature interoperability, and feature value distribution in a reference corpus to anticipate potentially spurious data sparsity effects

    WiSARD é um classificador n-upla, historicamente usado em tarefas de reconhecimento de padrões em imagens em preto e branco. Infelizmente, não era comum que este fosse usado em outras tarefas, devido á sua incapacidade de arcar com grandes volumes de dados por ser sensível ao conteúdo aprendido. Recentemente, a técnica de bleaching foi concebida como uma melhoria à arquitetura do classificador n-upla, como um meio de coibir a sensibilidade da WiSARD. Desde então, houve um aumento na gama de aplicações construídas com este sistema de aprendizado. Pelo uso frequente de corpora bastante grandes, a etiquetação gramatical multilíngue encaixa-se neste grupo de aplicações. Esta tese aprimora o mWANN-Tagger, um etiquetador gramatical sem peso proposto em 2012. Este texto mostra que a pesquisa em etiquetação multilíngue com WiSARD foi intensificada através do uso de linguística quantitativa e que uma configuração de parâmetros universal foi encontrada para o mWANN-Tagger. Análises e experimentos com as bases da Universal Dependencies (UD) mostram que o mWANN-Tagger tem potencial para superar os etiquetadores do estado da arte dada uma melhor representação de palavra. Esta tese também almeja avaliar as vantagens do bleaching em relação ao modelo tradicional através do arcabouço teórico da teoria VC. As dimensões VC destes foram calculadas, atestando-se que um classificador n-upla, seja WiSARD ou com bleaching, que possua N memórias endereçadas por n-uplas binárias tem uma dimensão VC de exatamente N (2n − 1) + 1.
