Multibody dynamics model building using graphical interfaces
In recent years, the extremely laborious task of manually deriving equations of motion for the simulation of multibody spacecraft dynamics has largely been eliminated. Instead, the dynamicist now works with commonly available general purpose dynamics simulation programs which generate the equations of motion either explicitly or implicitly via computer codes. The user interface to these programs has predominantly been via input data files, each with its own required format and peculiarities, causing errors and frustrations during program setup. Privacy and Fairness in Recommender Systems via Adversarial Training of User Representations
Latent factor models for recommender systems represent users and items as low
dimensional vectors. Privacy risks of such systems have previously been studied
mostly in the context of recovery of personal information in the form of usage
records from the training data. However, the user representations themselves
may be used together with external data to recover private user information
such as gender and age. In this paper we show that user vectors calculated by a
common recommender system can be exploited in this way. We propose the
privacy-adversarial framework to eliminate such leakage of private information,
and study the trade-off between recommender performance and leakage both
theoretically and empirically using a benchmark dataset. An advantage of the
proposed method is that it also helps guarantee fairness of results, since all
implicit knowledge of a set of attributes is scrubbed from the representations
used by the model, and thus can't enter into the decision making. We discuss
further applications of this method towards the generation of deeper and more

Typo-resource: developing T&L support materials through collaboration
This paper reports on a collaborative project between staff and students in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading The Partnerships in Learning and Teaching (PLanT) project here described is a direct response to student needs for better online support materials. Methodologically, the project embeds user-centred design principles within an iterative process of design development and participant research. This process has underpinned the development of a prototype for an online interface called Typo-Resource. The resulting initial prototype addresses the usability and user experience dimensions of an online learning resource, moving beyond providing tutor-identified sets of resources to a multifaceted, collaborative, and visual platform for peer learning
