    Use of web technology in providing information services by south Indian technological universities as displayed on library websites

    Abstract Purpose - This paper aims to discuss the present status of using new generation web technology, social media and Web 2.0 features among the technological university library websites in south India. It assesses the library websites as a primary platform and one-stop portal for information services and examines as to how much library websites are effective in providing web-based information services. Design/Methodology/Approach - The library websites of the technological universities in south India were evaluated on the basis of a relative weight checklist. The criteria for the checklist was drawn on the basis of availability of websites for library, resource discovery tools, access to scholarly content and Web 2.0 tools. The various issues and challenges in adapting new web technologies in academic environment are discussed. Findings - Using the current web development technologies and deploying for mainstream web information services is not widespread as web information services are yet to take off widely in academic libraries. The majority of university libraries are found to be working in the conventional library settings and the diffusion rate of web information services is relatively low. Originality/value - As this is an assessment of the existing online information infrastructure facilities of the engineering universities in south India, the awareness of web-based information services, their viability, and service values can be enhanced.     AO-WAD: a proposal for accessible design within web engineering approaches

    Mature Web Engineering (WE) approaches provide good resources for developing Web 2.0 applications. The state-of-the-art shows that many of these approaches have evolved for providing support to different issues during the development process of these kind of applications, as business-to-business process modeling, context-awareness, RIAs and live-regions or quality factors for improving users’ experience. Focusing on Accessibility, having full support usually means being tightly coupled to host process and models, which prevents conveying this support to other WE approaches. In this paper we introduce our proposal, called Aspect-Oriented Web Accessibility Design (AO-WAD), and generalize its use within WE approaches to provide Accessibility support applying Aspect-Orientation techniques.     Building ontologies in a collaborative and increasingly community-driven fashion has become a central paradigm of modern ontology engineering. This understanding of ontologies and ontology engineering processes is the result of intensive theoretical and empirical research within the Semantic Web community, supported by technology developments such as Web 2.0. Over 6 years after the publication of the first methodology for collaborative ontology engineering, it is generally acknowledged that, in order to be useful, but also economically feasible, ontologies should be developed and maintained in a community-driven manner, with the help of fully-fledged environments providing dedicated support for collaboration and user participation. Wikis, and similar communication and collaboration platforms enabling ontology stakeholders to exchange ideas and discuss modeling decisions are probably the most important technological components of such environments. In addition, process-driven methodologies assist the ontology engineering team throughout the ontology life cycle, and provide empirically grounded best practices and guidelines for optimizing ontology development results in real-world projects. The goal of this article is to analyze the state of the art in the field of collaborative ontology engineering. We will survey several of the most outstanding methodologies, methods and techniques that have emerged in the last years, and present the most popular development environments, which can be utilized to carry out, or facilitate specific activities within the methodologies. A discussion of the open issues identified concludes the survey and provides a roadmap for future research and development in this lively and promising field
