    The Recovery of Weak Impulsive Signals Based on Stochastic Resonance and Moving Least Squares Fitting

    In this paper a stochastic resonance (SR)-based method for recovering weak impulsive signals is developed for quantitative diagnosis of faults in rotating machinery. It was shown in theory that weak impulsive signals follow the mechanism of SR, but the SR produces a nonlinear distortion of the shape of the impulsive signal. To eliminate the distortion a moving least squares fitting method is introduced to reconstruct the signal from the output of the SR process. This proposed method is verified by comparing its detection results with that of a morphological filter based on both simulated and experimental signals. The experimental results show that the background noise is suppressed effectively and the key features of impulsive signals are reconstructed with a good degree of accuracy, which leads to an accurate diagnosis of faults in roller bearings in a run-to failure test

    Fault detection of helicopter gearboxes using the multi-valued influence matrix method

    In this paper we investigate the effectiveness of a pattern classifying fault detection system that is designed to cope with the variability of fault signatures inherent in helicopter gearboxes. For detection, the measurements are monitored on-line and flagged upon the detection of abnormalities, so that they can be attributed to a faulty or normal case. As such, the detection system is composed of two components, a quantization matrix to flag the measurements, and a multi-valued influence matrix (MVIM) that represents the behavior of measurements during normal operation and at fault instances. Both the quantization matrix and influence matrix are tuned during a training session so as to minimize the error in detection. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this detection system, it was applied to vibration measurements collected from a helicopter gearbox during normal operation and at various fault instances. The results indicate that the MVIM method provides excellent results when the full range of faults effects on the measurements are included in the training set

    Robust detection, isolation and accommodation for sensor failures

    The objective is to extend the recent advances in robust control system design of multivariable systems to sensor failure detection, isolation, and accommodation (DIA), and estimator design. This effort provides analysis tools to quantify the trade-off between performance robustness and DIA sensitivity, which are to be used to achieve higher levels of performance robustness for given levels of DIA sensitivity. An innovations-based DIA scheme is used. Estimators, which depend upon a model of the process and process inputs and outputs, are used to generate these innovations. Thresholds used to determine failure detection are computed based on bounds on modeling errors, noise properties, and the class of failures. The applicability of the newly developed tools are demonstrated on a multivariable aircraft turbojet engine example. A new concept call the threshold selector was developed. It represents a significant and innovative tool for the analysis and synthesis of DiA algorithms. The estimators were made robust by introduction of an internal model and by frequency shaping. The internal mode provides asymptotically unbiased filter estimates.The incorporation of frequency shaping of the Linear Quadratic Gaussian cost functional modifies the estimator design to make it suitable for sensor failure DIA. The results are compared with previous studies which used thresholds that were selcted empirically. Comparison of these two techniques on a nonlinear dynamic engine simulation shows improved performance of the new method compared to previous technique

    A method based on order tracking and Variational Mode Decomposition was proposed to solve the problem of non-stationarity and background noise in the vibration signal of engine. For the vibration signal of diesel engine crankshaft bearing fault and Connecting rod bearing of gasoline engine, the non-stationary signal in the time domain was converted into a pseudo stationary signal on the angular domain based on order tracking. Then the reconstructed signal was decomposed by several components by VMD, and the component that contains fault information was selected. The three-dimensional spectral array of order, speed and power spectrum was calculated, and the fault feature was extracted. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment

    Fault detection in operating helicopter drive train components based on support vector data description

    The objective of the paper is to develop a vibration-based automated procedure dealing with early detection of mechanical degradation of helicopter drive train components using Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) data. An anomaly-detection method devoted to the quantification of the degree of deviation of the mechanical state of a component from its nominal condition is developed. This method is based on an Anomaly Score (AS) formed by a combination of a set of statistical features correlated with specific damages, also known as Condition Indicators (CI), thus the operational variability is implicitly included in the model through the CI correlation. The problem of fault detection is then recast as a one-class classification problem in the space spanned by a set of CI, with the aim of a global differentiation between normal and anomalous observations, respectively related to healthy and supposedly faulty components. In this paper, a procedure based on an efficient one-class classification method that does not require any assumption on the data distribution, is used. The core of such an approach is the Support Vector Data Description (SVDD), that allows an efficient data description without the need of a significant amount of statistical data. Several analyses have been carried out in order to validate the proposed procedure, using flight vibration data collected from a H135, formerly known as EC135, servicing helicopter, for which micro-pitting damage on a gear was detected by HUMS and assessed through visual inspection. The capability of the proposed approach of providing better trade-off between false alarm rates and missed detection rates with respect to individual CI and to the AS obtained assuming jointly-Gaussian-distributed CI has been also analysed

    A proposal of a technique for correlating defect dimensions to vibration amplitude in bearing monitoring

    The capability of early stage detection of a defect is gaining more and more importance because it can help the maintenance process, the cost reduction and the reliability of the systems. The increment of vibration amplitude is a well-known method for evaluating the damage of a component, but it is sometimes difficult to understand the exact level of damage. In other words, the amplitude of vibration cannot be directly connected to the dimension of the defect. In the present paper, based on a non-Hertzian contact algorithm, the spectrum of the pressure distribution in the contact surface between the race and the rolling element is evaluated. Such spectrum is then compared with the acquired spectrum of a vibration response of a defected bearing. The bearing vibration pattern was previously analyzed with monitoring techniques to extract all the damage information. The correlation between the spectrum of the pressure distribution in the defected contact surface and the analyzed spectrum of the damaged bearing highlights a strict relationship. By using that analysis, a precise correlation between defect aspect and dimension and vibration level can be addressed to estimate the level of damaging

    Demodulation of Vibration Signal Based on Envelope-Kurtogram for Ball Bearing Fault Detection

    Rolling element bearings often suffer damage due to harsh operating and environmental conditions. The method commonly used in detecting faults in a bearing is envelope analysis. However, this method requires setting the central frequency and the correct bandwidth - which corresponds to the resonance frequency of the bearing - for signal demodulation to be effective. This study proposes a kurtogram to determine the correct central frequency and bandwidth to obtain the frequency band with the highest impulse content or the highest kurtosis value. Analysis envelope is applied to the filtered vibration signal using the central frequency and bandwidth parameters obtained from the kurtogram. The results showed that the envelope-kurtogram method is effective for faulty bearing detection as shown in the envelope spectrum where the peaks coincide with the bearing defect characteristic frequency (BPFO) with high accuracy. Likewise, it can be observed several BPFO harmonics which provide information on the level of bearing fault
